Yes. Forget it.

Unless you've made arrangement to be part of a camp slated for placement there, hanging out with the other 30,000+ of us is your doom.

Bring a bike. With a lock. And a light.

It's hard to camp further than a quarter-mile from the Esplanade, too.

All the areas marked in pink on this map are reserved for theme camps.

The remaining areas within the streets are open for first come, first served camping.

Also, you should be aware that "camping outside the gates" to wait for a good spot is NOT encouraged. There are no services there. At best you'll just be in the way. At worst you'll be asked to leave and come back when the gates open to the public.

Seriously, the Esplanade is like main street, it is definately a place to VISIT, but you may/may not want to CAMP there. Even if you could, which is very unlikely at this point...

The Esplanade is supposed to be for 24 hours camps (roughly), which means there is activity/people in your camp all hours of the day. Some people like this, some do not. Also, you get people wandering through your camp looking for the Playa. Camps that are closer to Esplanade TEND to be better executed, but there are PLENTY of cool camps that are no where near Esplanade, in fact if you restrict yourself to only Esplanade you will be missing much of Burning Man.

That being said, as others have hinted, Esplanade fills up (and a good many streets behind that) with registered camps long before anyone shows up, so unless you are part of a registered camp that gets on Esplanade, you should probably forget camping there. It doesn't nmatter if you line up NOW, you still will not get on Esplanade) As Stuart hinted, however, you MAY be able to convince an existing Esplanade camp to let you camp with them (if it is just you or maybe 1-2 others), but this is entirely dependent on how much you are willing to suck up to them (or what skills you have) and how good you are at people skills.

I recommend you do not worry about Esplanade this year, find a spot that is open in the city that has camps/people nearby that look interesting to you, and enjoy. After you have been for a year, it will all make more (or less) sense.

Good Luck, and enjoy your virgin year!

regards, Jafe

Esplanade and on

Personally, having camped on the esplanade, I'd pass. I prefer the first or 2nd street off of the esplanade. Not quite as hectic I think.

Whatever you do don't try to sneak in to a space up close, at the very least ask. Where ever you end up, remember you don't have to hang out there exclusively, these days there are lots of camps up front that are welcoming and are great hang outs. Make sure to bring treats and you'll be welcomed. As a first timer you'll want to adventure out and see what's out there.

Also there are no porta potties on the Esplanade. They are a couple streets back. As for cleanliness, the ones that are further out tend to be much cleaner.
