Can I get 20 classic cars gathered on the playa?? yeow..

I want to create an installation that will have an aspect which requires as many classic cars as possible- from the 50's and 60's be a part of the piece.

I was thinking maybe look on Craigslist Reno, but I would still have to pay for them, even buy them! yeow! expensive! Not to mention, I'm then stuck with a bunch of old cars after. And how do I get them to the Playa?
I'd rather just find some burners with funky cars and have them park em in my lot-
I could stretch to maybe 1975 or so... much later and there's no point, it would change the piece quite significantly. I don't see this as a viable option really because I have rarely seen such vehicles at burn unless they are art cars. Also- they will likely incurr dome damage from the dust. Who wants that. :(

The cars don't need to run, not for my purposes anyway. Just look nice enough that people might crawl inside.
There is also a chance someone might spill something or-
of course they will get dusty! so these are considerations.

I'm not even sure how I would tow cars to burn.
I intend to apply for a grant, but I'm not even sure how I would spend it-
I'm thinking buy/rent a tow truck and/or car trailler quite frankly.. then pay for cars from there.. pick things up around Reno and area.

I'm open to suggestions
and people volunteering cars -??

Maybe if they are all welded together into some giant art piece that extended toward the heavens. But just a plain old 50's 60's cars probably wouldn't be considered art. Even David Best's cars are not looked upon as they used to be. Now-a-days it needs to be a "mutant vehicle"...a car/truck/etc. that doesn't look like a car/truck/etc.

You could pick up junker classics for about $500-1000 each. But they will be in pretty rough shape for that price. A running classic clunker will still be about $2500 each at a minimum. Want interior (like not indian blankets and say headliner) then expect to spend another $500.

It would be hard. I doubt you could rent them. If I still had my 58 chevy I would have let you use it, but suffice to say it was sold to pay for travel.

The good news: Reno and Sparks is filled with classic cars, so if you can come up with the cash you can buy all the cars you needed here. Plus, clean them up when you bring them back and you can most likely resell them over the next year.

Much of this has already been considered.
I live in Toronto, so resell after, and even spending time picking things up before will be very tough. It would take a lot more money to keep me in the area, not to mention, interfere with my fall plans.

I have thought about approching Burners as they arrive and inviting funky vehicles to park in my parking lot. However- this would really change the idea of my project, and the cars would send off a very different message.

If I'm going to do any restoration it would have to happen one of two ways- 1. buy the vehicles nearby- ie Buffalo, and fix them up there.. then somehow cart them to Burn, or
2. Come VERY VERY early to Burn and do restorations then.

The more I think about it it seems hopless, but I'm not any where near giving up-

I do wonder how much it would cost to transport 15 cars by train across the country from Buffalo or Chicago- to Reno or area. Even still, towing would be in order. If I did that though, and could borrow some land out this way- I could spend time making the cars look nice, even if it's just sanding of rust and painting over it, and getting some interior kits off ebay and covering the flaws.

If I buy them in Reno- which is SO much closer and easier expense wise.. I would have to order stuff online and then wait for it. Still- costs would be lower. Potentially.

I don't even have much pocket change, so I also need to fundraise.
I guess a website would be a place to start for that yes? What might be some good fundraisers- do you think..
and how could I reach people in Reno who might have cars to donate.
Is there a local paper? Could I get a Burn volunteer to paint the town with signs??

I live so far away.. :(

I would! I would! Or I would use my own idea, A drive-in movie theatre with the cars already there. At least one would need to be mutated and function so you could sneak people into the movie using the truck.

If you squish em, you can get like 30 of them on there. Seriously though I dont think anyone with a decent classic is going to let you park it in the desert and let a bunch of people climb in and poo, or hump in em. You never know though - good luck.

This one is going to be a beast. Fundraising is not easy. Considering your base costs alone, this one may be a lost cause unless you know you can dig up $20,000 from somewhere.

A website is a start. You need to drive traffic too it. Start writing your org grant. Look into indiegogo.com and kickstarter.com. Get friends together and start throwing little parties. Try to plan some big ones. Beg everyone you know for cash. Stop eating (seriously, skip a meal a day and that is at least $5 a day). Rob a couple stores. Sell drugs or start a prostitution ring.

This is one of those ideas that COULD be done but do you realize how much money you'll spend simply hauling the cars? A big-rig car hauler only carries 8 or 9 at most, maybe less if they're really big old American sleds. Dealing with non-runners adds a lot of time and pain-in-the-assness too.

Your chances of finding that many cars of the vintage you want coming in the gate with owners who will let you use them (and screw them up royally) in an art installation are kinda slim.

So... I've only got one question: what's your budget?
