Haunted house theme camp?? Has it ever been done??

Post by WickedLester » Thu Dec 23, 2010 5:06 pm

We are a group of haunted house improv actors from cleveland ohio...has there ever been a haunted house at burning man? We were considering trying to bring one next year.

Even if there's one on every block (and I've never seen one) none of them will be yours.

I don't remember one, but I don't remember what I did Tuesday night on the playa this year, so that doesn't count for a lot.

I like the idea- I just want to be there when someone "altered" starts thinking the headless ghost is real.

We would definately have to put up some kind of warning sign. Our group is based on hollywood style reality make-up. Lots of horror and gore!! I wouldn't want to ruin someones "altered" state.
But the house idea is only in the planning stage right now.....As I see it we have two options for plans right now. First we have the plans for a house with a box panel truck in the middle with a vortex tunnel inside it. Second plan is to get one of the put up temp structure haunted houses and use it. Such as a Nightmare on elmstreet house. But like I said the group that is planning to come,is meeting here in cleveland shortly after the holidays and discussing what we want to try do.

Great idea. My partner would love it...he's one of those people that thinks Halloween is the best holiday of the year. Plus, he's from Ohio. (So am I actually, but I don't really like to admit it.)

There will be a haunted house theme camp this year at Colorado's regional event Apogaea. "Carnival of Fear" started out as a backyard haunted house run by several Colorado Burners this past Halloween and met with such success, and upon my recommendation (coz I'm a sucker for haunted houses), they decided to bring it to Apogaea.

In 2005 the Man stood atop a marvelous Fun House Maze complete with sliding and revolving doors, dead ends and, ultimately, a fireman's pole. That Fun house remains my all-time favorite experience at Burning Man. It was a haunted house, but each room was given over to artists who packed it with amazing and interactive art.

I really hope you guys can make your HH theme camp a realty. I will definitely be there!

<flashlight under face>

Well, one Burning Man a long time ago, there was an angry one-handed BLM ranger in Nevada, one Ranger Karl Phallenrauches. He was arguably the first BLM personnel that ever dealt with what would eventually become the BORG. This was back when BM/Cacaphony had just made Zone Trip #4, and the event was on nobodies radar.

Now, Ranger Karl met a lot of the original folk, Larry, J. Law, Marian & that crowd, and while he had some anger issues stemming from the prosthetic hook he wore on his left arm, he was also pretty creative, so he made a few suggestions that first year. Some of them were dead on, and the following year when he went out patrolling the Black Rock Desert & found the same crowd, he had a grand ole' time and made a few more suggestions.

Eventually, around 1993 he told a couple of people that he wanted to start a camp of several people with a unified theme, maybe a holiday or something. Apparently, some of those folks took his idea and made what may or may not have been the first theme camp in BRC, AKA Christmas Camp.

Old Karl did not take kindly to that, and vowed revenge on anyone that would take his ideas away from him. He swore revenge on them, leaving the warning that he would get them scratched into whatever was handy with his bad spelling and horrible hook-hand. After several burners had been killed in their cars on the way to or from Burning Man, the Nevada Department of Transportation began putting up signs, which when had to be translated phonetically for modern US citizens.

Nowadays, they read: "Watch Out for Falling Rocks"

And there, under the fallen rock, was a hook!

I don't care what the borg says: feather-wearers will NOT be served in Rosie's Bar.
When I ask how many burns, I mean at BRC.

A few years back, there was a large carnival trailer (18 wheeler type) that was set up for a fun house maze. It was converted for the BM theme and very well done. It could be manned and unmanned, depending on the time of day, or motivation of the actors.

you may literally scare the shit out of somebody..., but that moop would be their issue...,

i'd rather run into a headless demon while being "altered" than a pantless shirt cocker... but that is just me.

As an added bonus with all of the ambient noise on the playa, less people will hear you scream

Yo, this is Rhino of Rue Morgue. This concept works up pretty well with what we have in mind, too. Except we're not the same. I just don't know how to describe us, and you, and potential collaboration, and all that stuff.
We've got a few hardcore zombies that might be able to help you pull this off. The problem of it all is, we ......need.......BRAINS.......lol

Drop me a line and we'll talk about it.

If you are experienced improv actors, then frankly you'll be way ahead of most theme camps in terms of interactivity and yes, entertainment value.

I first came up with the idea to do a haunted house on playa back in 2006. Due to funding it has never gotten off the ground. I have worked at several haunted houses on the east coast and I have lots of great cheap ideas. I also helped construct three of the haunted houses that made a lot of people scream. If there is enough money and support behind this project I would love to join your team in making this happen on playa.

Is there anything really in the works?

Hey, SM, how ya doing? :)

We all know how you like to get "ahead" of barbarians.

But we're here for the headless shirtcockers, topless vampires and playa ghouls. ;)

OP: Harry?

Forget a warning sign. Have a window looking into a 'display' room (only workers can get in/out) next to the door into the house with a hooker (suspension artist) hanging around. If a person freaks out, they can't handle the house. If they don't, then they can come in and see the gory shit.

Yes, I'm afraid it has. Multiple times.
