this is actually really cute that you're trying to figure out a way for her to go, i know the feeling. it seems like nudity would be the least of her worries if she's that closed up to free expression. a tough lesson i learned last year is that although Burning Man IS for everyone that doesnt mean everyone needs to go.

Way to stereotype Mormons, this guy goes to the LDS church and could care less about pink parts. I have lots of LDS friends that go with me as well. Nudity is not pornography - BIG difference...No one is "Raised to believe nudity is bad" in the church as well. A lack of morals is what your looking for. Where did you get this info anyways? Sex with clothes on? That is just ridiculous.Ogdenhousedj wrote:It sounds to me like the friend is a mormon, and they are raised to think that you should be offended by nudity. Shit most of them keep as much clothes on during sex as possible after they are married I dont think the burn is the place for those people unless they have the will to leave the Zion Curtain
Moving on.
Its not going to be possible to go to BM and not see a wiener or breasts or vagina. Americans hang up with nudity is a cultural thing not religious. I have sat in communal toilets with chicks in Italy, france, spain, egypt, etc. No big deal when your raised that way.
Leave her at home is my vote.

I get my info from being raised in Utah as a non mormon. Idk where your from but I know Utah Mormons and non Utah Mormons are alot different 90% of Utah Mormons don't leave this state except to go on missions. I've had alot of them tell me maxim is porn and yes alot of them are so ashamed of their sexuality that they stay clothed during sex. They are taught that anybody that isn't Mormon is a sinner and is not welcomed to "their heaven" and that only they are the true church and would prob be excommunicated for attending the new sodom & gamora that is burningman. I'm not stereotyping I'm going by what their beliefs are as a true Mormon and not one that picks and chooses what they follow (being somewhere besides a Mormon church on a Sunday is bad, temple burn don't count)mdmf007 wrote:Way to stereotype Mormons, this guy goes to the LDS church and could care less about pink parts. This nudity thing is such a hang-up with so many people. I swear, that after an hour on the playa, you don't notice naked people. You can have a full detailed conversation with someone unclothed, and not really realize it. The awkwardness of where to look, is really not a problem.
My first year on the playa, there was a guy out in the deep playa stark nekkid. He had no clothes with him, even in a back pack. I couldn't understand how you can spend the day like that and not be self conscious. The next year, I was fine riding in the World Naked Bike Ride. It actually felt awkward having to get dressed afterward.
Your friend may need to be 'exposed' to this and may actually appreciate what god has created.

When I went, I had this back-of-my-mind expectation that I'd be running in to naked, dirty hippies using every opportunity to strut around and show themselves off in the buff. Like many of my original expectations, nothing could be further from the truth. I didn't see any exhibitionism, lewdness, or other kinds of deviant behavior; it was just people carrying on as if that's what they wear (or don't) every day.
I think the nudity at BM is less sexualized than the worn clothing. Women walking around in bikinis and other such clothing leave little to the imagination, and it's not much different for the men. If your friend is fine with visiting a beach, she should be fine with BM.

The word "naked" appears 108 times in the King James Version and 16 times in the Book of Mormon. Deal with it.

I'm an ex-Mo now living in Utah. The answer is somewhere in between your two views. Yes, Utah-raised Mormons are different than out of state converts. Some Mormons take it to the extremes, they don't remove their garments (funny underwear) during sex. That was possible with the old style garments, I don't know if the newer ones have the pooper/peeper slots. This is the state where Victoria's Secret has been asked to put more clothes on their mannequins. I have been assured young people are taught to shower quickly so as not to tempt themselves into touching their bodies. Sports practices are banned on Mondays in some school districts because that is Family Home Evening. There is a booming business in modest wedding dresses. And modest prom dresses (same thing). Teachers legally cannot talk to students about condoms. And so on.Ogdenhousedj wrote:I get my info from being raised in Utah as a non mormon. Of course, you can find similar restrictions from other religions in other states. A natural conclusion if you live in Utah, but erroneous. I used to live in Iran, but I didn't jump to Islamic rules. I thought more of my friend, a born again something or other from South Dakota, who prays for me a lot.
So, yes and no on the Mormons and nudity.

All you need is a good pony blinders/briddle headpiece..

..maybe even complete the outfit for your friend.
Although I happen to think you can go to the event and not see nakie people with out head gear. But it's all up to your friend. If your friend is going to worry about cocks and tits, then your friend is going to see them everywhere. But if your friend magically develops the mind set of, "meh" then they won't notice the bits moving in the background noise. At that point it's up to you to keep your friend away from naughty bit hot spots.. like booby bar, CnJ, WWC, critical tits/dicks, party naked, ext..
If that doesn't work then point out that their is less third legs trilling in the wind then can-cans. Something that should help your friend regardless of gender. Then play up your friends moral convictions as strength to their ability to not have nudity effect them. While reminding them that each person has a philosophy that drives that person and it may be completely different or in tune to your friends. You should make your camping spot a safe zone.
Lastly all the planing in the world doesn't mean shit if you roll into the greeters station when the naked greeters are greeting.

Is it just me, or does it seem strange that for the OP, nudity seems to mean male nudity?JassenB wrote: -keep her nocturnal - I don't recall seeing a single penis at night in 2009

Re: Avoiding nudity at BM - is it possible?
JassenB, I'm sorry, but you are wrong. I understand the value of tolerating other people's beliefs and blah blah blah, but I have to tell you that is is just plain wrong to respect the kind of ignorant superstition that costs children's lives.JassenB wrote:I have a very dear friend that has been curious about BRC for years and years, and is enticed by everything she hears about it...except the nudity. This is based on religious/moral grounds, and I completely respect her thoughts in that department.
I was thinking about your friend today as I was trying, frantically, at 4:30 on Friday afternoon, to pull together an immediate multidisciplinary cancer consultation for a poor dumb kid who walked into clinic this morning with a 5 cm tumor on his right testicle. Well I call him "poor," but he's from a wealthy family. And I call him "dumb," but he's a student at a well-known university. And I call him a kid, but he's 18 years old, so... I can't call his family for him.
And I want to. I want to call his family. I want to call them out, actually, because this huge tumor did not pop up overnight and, even alone in an exam room with the most low-key, gently-mannered and kind-hearted male doctor in the entire faculty, this kid could not admit that he had noticed that huge tumor. He said he just thought he'd "pulled something at the gym." He's probably been sweating bullets about that thing for months.
So, yeah, you say you respect the people who are so frightened of the human body that they can't look at it, they can't talk about it, and they can't give their children the skills they need to survive cancer?
That's just wrong. But I hope that your friend never personally finds out exactly how wrong it is.
You may now return to your regularly scheduled snarking.

Good point. The slutty E-freaks in their tutus and hot pants shit are more offensive than any of the old naked hippies.

Is your friend a Muslim? A Christian? Whose moral code forbids nudity? Help me out with some details.

Thank you (((Doc Pyro))) sorry to get so real on hereDr. Pyro wrote:Thanks Julia. We need some proper perspective once in awhile.
Hoping to escape from all that in BRC
Slutty E-freaks could be interesting to look at, yes? I won't find them offensive if they don't throw their self-inflicted problems in my lap.
There is a possible solution. The nighttime doesn't seem to bring out much nudity, so the above comments are applicable there. In the bright daylight, your friend can wear a welding mask with a dark lens. He or she will be able to make out the outlines of people and art, but finer details will be blocked. This will allow safe walking without bumping into people or art. It would still be advisable to have a companion in case the person wishes to view the art completely without the obstruction from the dark lens. Once the companion has determined that a particular piece of art is free from nudity thus safe to view, the friend may then momentarily remove the welding mask from the face for a brief glimpse of the art.

I consider myself to be open minded and street-wise - but for good or for ill, I have seen things on the playa that are burned into my retinas forever. I think what may be hardest for you to get her through is the general attitude of avoidance rather than acceptance. You may do far better taking a lot of good photos and editing your choices to give her. Even the sounds of Burning Man could be very hard for someone like her. Megaphones don't stop when the sun goes down and that is when the heavy partying ramps up.
Edited to add: Oh! If she attends, don't come in on Wednesday unless she has a bag on her head - that's the naked Greeter's shift!

OK true story: a couple weeks ago finally sent my (yes Mormon) folks some selected pics of BRC 2010. Called them, all excited to see if they liked the art. First thing they said "Son we wish you wouldn't go around in that loincloth thing, please don't send us photos of that".
Heh, they got the 5% of pics without me bare or with naked people in the background somewhere...though I slipped in a distant shot of the WNBR: guess which photo they complained most about?
'and um...the art, Mom and Dad, like any of that in those pics??'
