Burning Man Research
Burning Man Research
I am currently writing my sociology senior thesis paper on BM. Are there any existing studies on Burning Man out there? So far I have found none, which I find bewildering.
Also, how do I get into contact with the BM Census Bureau?

This question gets asked probably a couple of times a year, so there have got to be dozens of papers out there. Finding them is part of your research. Lexis-Nexis maybe?
As for the "BM Census Bureau"- I don't think any such animal exists. Check the main Burning Man website for contact information for the various departments.

I have in fact been to Burning Man, where I did a large amount of interview research. I am simply trying to expand my secondary research, and believe that Burners are the best source in obtaining this.
I have no intensions of polluting the forum's so if any of you view my post as inappropriate you have my apologies. For those who have given me advice, I greatly appreciate it, it has been very helpful.

There was a fellow a while back that posted a link to his thesis which he did on sociology/religion.
He wasn't as full of shit as some of the other papers I've read even though the subject material was a bit esoteric.
Do a Google search for John W. Morehead (include the word 'burn' or 'burning')and you may have some luck linking up with a kindred soul.
Also, have a look at this link for a few names you might want to follow up on: http://articles.latimes.com/2010/oct/2 ... n-20101020

Bzzzt. Nobody has the 'right' answers?
Start here:
http://www.burningman.com/whatisburning ... emics.html
Let me google this for you:
http://www.google.com/search?q=burning+man+sociology
The yearly census reports are at:

Wild fucking guess, try [email protected] as a contact.
Failing that, [email protected] (per above link) or [email protected].
Don't worry about using a spelchecker, it just flags you as a social elitist.

Re: Burning Man Research
If you haven't found anything, then I fear for your project. There is several analytical books written on Burning Man. It has come as a focus of many anthropologists in the last several years, and there have been several scholarly articles written about the various aspects of the festival. Look harder.

Great place to write a paper about.
It's so full of contradictions...trying to fulfill so much and on the very edge of failing at everything. I like to call it "barely-controlled chaos".
Emile Durkheim would love this place. The cult of the individual and the greater good of the society battling it out for supremacy. Cooley, Mead, Parsons, Merton...anyone of a dozen sociologists would have had a blast here also.
I'm not writing a paper, but I'm taking Blumer, Garfinkle, and Goffman with me next time. I'm going to test out theory by observing behavior and modifying my own to see reactions. Well, I will take notes.
Have fun...Burning man THINKS it contradicts social norms and values, but in reality in has just replaced the greater society's norms and values with its own. Pay close attention to all the ritualism...it permeates everything there.

Just be careful. Some of those sentient cloves enforce the "inedible" in very creative ways.Simon of the Playa wrote:well, that gets into all kinds of questions about sentient plant life, but yes, it is a form of road-kill, and them's good eatin'.

Sometimes, simple search doesn't help much. I had a chance to analyze all the Burning Man Research Papers section on Academia.edu and found nothing that could help me write my essay's final part. My topic is Analysis of Social Media in the Burning Man Community and, luckily, I found UCLA Electronic Theses and Dissertations. I can share the link, if someone is interested (or just for those students who are working on their research papers).

If there have been any scholarly papers regarding Burning Man published in peer reviewed journals, you may find them listed on "JSTOR".
