From San Antonio, my first burn
At heart I'm from Brooklyn (I moved here for some damned reason a couple fo years ago and have regretted it ever since)
But, being this far west, makes it possible -- albeit still not very smart -- to go to my first Burning Man. I wanted to go for ten years now.
As of now, I'm going solely by myself. I have neither a huge, elaborate camp nor the means to create and transport it. I'm pretty happy about living in a primitive camp in the high desert with no cell phones, wifi or electricity for a week. Hell, I may not want to come back (Actually, I KNOW I won't, not to Texas any way).
I don't know if I want to sit in a car or van for 1,800 miles with strangers, but is anyone from Austin or San Antonio going? Or maybe a better question, where are the burners from Austin or San Antonio?
I'm pretty stoked about going.

Have you found the regionals sub forum and the regionals page on the main website? (Burningman.com)
There are texans on the board, Fae Tora is Dallas, I think and Captain Smashy and Dr. Jet Sinister are definitely Dallas. There are more, but those are the ones on the top of my head.
There's a lot of people at burningman. If you shrink from interacting from one...

I have New England and New York City blood and thick skin ... or whatever. I can do heat, but I'm smart enough to relax a little during the afternoon when it's the hottest.
I welcome the climate of the high desert, dust storms, heat, cold, awesome sunrises.
Crypto - I saw the regionals thing and signed up for an email alert of sorts. I think I need to explore that with more thought.
I knew a girl in Austin whom I met in NYC who went to Burning Man a few times. I only know her by her real name, Natasha Kouri. She's into hula hoops and lighting things on fire -- including herself and the hula hoops.
Tear - No kidding. Texas is horrible, but probably not to people from here who like it. (Wait, was that a Yogi Berra-ism?). Thanks for the welcome.
I plan to have a blast. I don't drink or do drugs, I'm not a tough guy ... I like to give and I especially like to explore. I never outgrew my childish curiosity and endless energy. I have a feeling I may only sleep a few minutes the whole week, and that's OK.
As an avid cyclist and "bike person," with an aversion to sitting inside and not doing anything adventurous and fun, I know how to keep myself alive in horrible conditions, and have fun whilst doing it.
I have a personal motto of sorts that I stole from Hunter Thompson, but I really don't ever get right: "It never got weird or crazy enough for me."

At this point, I'm also going by myself. I will know some people attending, but I like the idea of going at it alone my first year. I'm hoping to do some serious wandering and meeting of strangers.

I'm a huge fan of his writing, his story, for what he believed in, but not his lifestyle. I have "his" new book "The Mutineer" on pre-order at Amazon.

Re: From San Antonio, my first burn
I'm not anti social or anything, but I like to explore on my own. Besides with tens of thousands of new best friends, I imagine I won't really be alone.davem wrote:Super Evil Brian wrote: As of now, I'm going solely by myself.

Of course it's good to know other people there already.

I don't think Hunter was ever known for his "Good" social judgement. He was who he was. I still admire the bastard!gyre wrote:Hunter is the guy that, while riding with the Angels (a social group of motorcycle enthusiasts), rode a japanese bike.
While this may have been a reasonable mechanical choice, it showed poor social judgement.
Kind of a harley group, really.

Let me clarify may above statement. This sort of crazy shit I absolutely admire. The drug use and drinking I can do without.

Super Evil Brian, I think you will do just fine. There's loads of people who aren't drinking and drugging, and pretty much everyone is interesting in whatever state of mind they happen to be in. circulate, circulate.
