Boycott Lakeview Oregon!

Post by sproutsfriend » Sun Jan 09, 2011 6:18 pm

Many towns near Black rock city find various ways to capitalize on the passing burners every year, but none that I have seen have taken such an immoral approach. The last two years on our way to Burning man, like so many others, we were pulled over by the cops in Lakeview Oregon, a small town near the California and Nevada borders.
Each time we were seriously harassed and they attempted to search our car because it apparently "smelled of marijuana." The cops here are everywhere and on a serious rampage. The fact that Lakeview chooses to make money off of the event by performing illegal searches and passing out as many tickets as they can is dishonest, distasteful and obscene.
I have decided to avoid Lakeview altogether and I would encourage others going that way to boycott the town. This means don't buy anything there like food or gas (The cops sit at the gas stations anyway harassing burners who stop in).
You can choose to support the surrounding towns that embrace burners and respectfully treat them as an asset to there economy. If enough people join the fight, hopefully one day Lakeview will see that they will profit more without hurting others.

Thank you for this information. I will be travelling from the north on hwy 20. I don't see an alternate route around Lakeview to Alturas. Do you have any recommendations? I will be hauling a 5th wheel and the last thing I need are greedy lawmen wanting to delay my travels for personal gain.

Same thing for Oakridge, OR several of my camp mates had similar experiences there. I know small towns are hurting in this economy, but this is literally highway robbery. They all know it's their annual chance to fleece the freaks

All one can do is try try to treat them like decent human beings. As tempting as it is to hate on them, If we treat them as "the enemy" they will continue to do the same to us.

We will be coming down that way too.
If you don't mind the extra 20 miles and about 45 minutes, the best way to avoid Lakeview altogether is, from Hwy 395, instead of taking Hwy 299 to 447 just cut straight over to 447 via Hwy 140 (about 5 miles before Lakeview). But be careful, I think 447 might be called something different up in Oregon and California. I would look at a map.

Given our past experiences with this town, we prefer the little extra driving in order to avoid it.
Hope this helps.

You might try going through Klamath Falls then south past Tulelake, stop at Eagle's Nest RV Park and rest up, then south to Hwy 299 east a few miles and supply up, gas in Alturas, Ca, then over the hill to Cedarville. Over the last 6 years we have showed the local sheriff that Burners are great people and instead of law enforcement in Modoc County California being a problem for Burners they instead look out to help us as we transit the county going to and from Burning Man. As a matter of fact a recently retired Modoc County sheriff is a Burning Man Participant!
