There was a ton of APRS traffic last year, with a gateway that covered the playa so we were able to text other hams who were in Reno and etc.
It was also fun to chat with other people during Exodus.

I'll be returning to BRC for Rites of Passage - no art installation or volunteering for anything this year, just enjoying and participating.

I got up to snuff a couple years back with WinLink 2000 as an alternative to email on the playa. Not bad if you have the money for the PACTOR TNC and you can hit the HF stations.
Working WinLink off the VHF stations is real nice but I don't know if they can be accessed from BRC.

There's a wide-area VHF repeater in Gerlach, Nevada. The frequency is 145.230(-), PL is 123. It's located in the Granites about 10 miles north of Gerlach and the approximate mobile coverage is from Leadville to Soldier Meadows to the Jackson Mountains and south to about Nixon. Coverage into the Reno area is unlikely but both the 147.030 and 146.880 repeaters cover much of the Black Rock and reach into Reno.
This repeater is a solar site with battery back-up so use simplex when possible if you are up there.
This repeater is sponsored by the Friends of the Black Rock, www.blackrockfriends.org. The repeater was made possible by contributions from SNARS, N7KP, Friends, N2CRM, the High Rock Trekkers, W8KHU, and KD7YIM.
This repeater should provide useful coverage to both Gerlach area residents and recreational users. To prevent overuse, it will be turned off during Burning Man.
There is also an additional UHF repeater located in Gerlach on 444.175(+ 5000 MHz), PL of 100. This UHF repeater also includes a 911 phone patch and IRLP node # 7249. To use the phone patch for other calls, you must join their organization via www.cq-blackrock.org. They also have a simplex VHF IRLP node # 3075 at 146.700, PL of 100. Be sure to disconnect your Automatic Repeater Shift on this frequency! They also have APRS.
