The Long Warm Summer
The Long Warm Summer
Where is the best vacation spot on earth for a nice calm low responsibility week or 5? Let's rule out Black Rock City for the purpose of this thread.
Re: The Long Warm Summer
Are you talking an all inclusive type vacation, with fruity drinks, massages and swim-up bars or just a place to go?1durphul wrote:Where is the best vacation spot on earth for a nice calm low responsibility week or 5? Let's rule out Black Rock City for the purpose of this thread.

Doesn't matter. Camping self reliance, or all-inclusive soulless...JStep wrote:Are you talking an all inclusive type vacation, with fruity drinks, massages and swim-up bars or just a place to go?1durphul wrote:Where is the best vacation spot on earth for a nice calm low responsibility week or 5? I don't know about low responsibility, but Alaska sure is pretty. So's Antarctica, if you like the weather. The European Mediterranean riveria? Perhaps Mexico? Got money? The Emirates, even tho they have some pretty serious blue laws there, it's farking gorgeous.
A friend says anywhere new. I say - wander. Travel. Pick a direction and go. Be random. Just make sure you have a passport, and remember some countries have Visa requirements (like India and Russia). But yeah, that's kinda the ultimate vacation.
However... Know what I would do? The Trans-Siberian Railway. Ultimate low stress, you are immersed in various foreign cultures (while staying in the same country), you meet people (learn basic russian first, you'll pick up more once you're there), eat amazing (and sometimes strange) food, and you will see sights and landmarks you will NEVER forget. (Lake Baikal, for example). You will come back with memories of a lifetime, and even better, you can fly either back to Moskva/St Pete or via Japan or China to the US - OR ride it back. Me? That's what I'd do - in a surefire rapid heartbeat. You of course need your Visa or transit permit, and I'd do a layover in Vladivostok. Google it. ;)
Oh hell, I just made me homesick, damnit. Peh! :(

I know the Glauoi's Grandson Quite well.

Once I noticed I was on fire, I decided to relax and enjoy the fall™

OMG, it has been AMAZING the last week here in SF. I went to Dolores and read a book in the sun on Sunday and was actually *too warm*.Ugly Dougly wrote:It's pretty warm in the Bay Area right now..
I heard it's amazing there, although I've also heard about the recent unrest.Ugly Dougly wrote:But I'm going to pick Thailand.
Thanks Sue. Because I'm a 'mo I have to be careful about some of the places I'd like to visit. I do too, I think perhaps for the same reason. I actually had an offer of the use of a friends place in Dubai, free of charge, whenever I wanted to go, but currently it would not be a wise decision...1durphul wrote: Thanks Sue. TSR is amazing, in a way it's like burning man - you either fall in love and want to do it again and again, or you despise it and never want to do anything that adventurous again.
By the way - as I remember you can actually branch off (I think it's via the Trans-Mongolian leg, not the Vladivostok leg) to do North Korea as far as Pyongyang. It would be an experience as well, tho it IS Korea... do NOT do it in the winter!!!
Another one - I thought of this - is one I want to do, that's the Trans-Australian, both the Perth-Sydney and the Adelaide-Darwin runs. Actually - if you start in Perth, go to Sydney, catch a hop to Adelaide (which you've been thru) and then fly home out of Darwin
For me, Train travel rocks - easy cruising, laid back, see a whole new world, and absolutely no responsibilities (other than eating, or getting off to see the sights!)...

1durphul, it's a tough choice. Corfu would be a non-stop party with lots of interesting people. Jump off at Brindisi....see Paliokastritsa. The Kenai peninsula in Alaska is great. The East coast of Mexico is not too discovered.. Isla Aguada was nice. Bodrum and the surrounding coast is great. Same for Capri and Sorrento....The Amalfi Coast. Canadian Rockies are a sure bet. You can now drive the "haul road" to Prudhoe Bay, Ak. Lauterbrunnen, Chuisa and the surrounding area is spectacular. All I can think of at the moment.
I don't post things because I believe that they are the absolute truth. I post them because I believe that they should be considered.

If you're going to AZ, you have to see the Mogollon rim. It has vistas of 150 miles. If you want to get away from it ALL, go to Toroweap. It's a unit of the Grand Canyon that is absolutely pristine. Head off towards Flaming Gorge and turn of to mount Trumball. The road is gravel but, it didn't bother me. Both places are spectacular.
