I don't want to have a "theme camp"....
The spot we were able to stake out in '10 was really great and i'd like to be able to grab it again next year. The thing is we aren't a large camp, we don't have a loud sound system and our bar is a couple of coolers that live under our shade. The question I bring to you more experienced burners is would registering our camp and requesting that spot be a viable option? I am tempted to but I don't want to gum up the system at the office because 8 of us want a great spot. thoughts?

When you 'request' placement as a registered theme camp there is no guarantee that you will get the spot you want...
The criteria for a registered theme camp includes 24/7 (ideally) interaction with the public; a couple of coolers probably won't cut it...
Peruse the Theme Camp Questionnaire Form to see if you can meet the requirements...

Re: camping at or near the same spot -- just set up camp after Burning Man opens like most normal people do, and enter your camp name and approximate street address on the computer machines at Playa Info in Center Camp so your friends can look you up.
Re: bugging the theme camp dept., don't waste your time or theirs. And per the above comments, registering doesn't guarantee a lot.

You did not state whether or not your camp was in a theme camp specific area. If it was not, that area most likely will NOT be a registered theme camp area next year. If that is the case becoming a registered theme camp will guarantee you won't get the same spot.
Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both right.

Um, ever read the article by Garrett Hardin on The Tragedy of the Commons? The question I bring to you more experienced burners is would registering our camp and requesting that spot be a viable option? I am tempted to but I don't want to gum up the system at the office because 8 of us want a great spot. thoughts?
Because what you're asking is exactly what the piece describes.
Namely, you have what's generally considered a finite resource (space) that's defined and marked off by the event. This is a resource that is specifically set aside for what the ORG considers a maximum utilization of a generally prized and limited asset for the larger body of attendees. The tragedy is when multiple individuals - much like yourself - acting independently, and solely and rationally consulting their own self-interest decide that it is worth depleting the resource for the purpose of attending to that self-interest in spite of the incremental depletion to the larger body that it represents.
In short, it's pure selfishness to think that you are (or should be) excluded from the social contract that others are adhering to. Consider what would happen if every other attendee felt the same sense of entitlement and just camped wherever the hell they wanted.

Having not looked into how registered camps work i didn't realize that they are in specific spots. Well, that's mostly true. I knew that the ring road and esplanade spots are set aside for larger camps but i never read into the mechanics of how getting them worked. Isotopia, I'll give it a read, it sounds interesting.
@bob, that's why i asked it here instead of applying for a camp. I know the org works hard and doesn't need my stupid questions.

Wasn't meant as criticism. Theme camp registration is kind of like oil production, it peaked about ten years ago with 400-odd camps. Most are vacuous holes at this point -- except for Doc Pyro's, he has a hot tub filled with petite syrahs.

Yes, and I will say...even being a huge 6 year Theme Village with street lights and interactivity 24/7 doesnt get you squat in asking for a particular placement!
Worse they will tell you you have your regular spot, then you get onto the Playa and Nope your down the block in the back in the dark by a sound camp! Sorry if you have your address on EVERYTHING for WWW, and gifty shwag, but we're going to use you in a experiment to light the way to the sound camp.

I dunno, my first theme camp year was 2005, prior to that, it was always public camping for us. Anyhow, we started our theme camp with just four guys, a couple of tents and a ez-up and we were able to get registered and had a lot of people stopping by 24/7. I say, if you have something to contribute to the community (and especially if you have a theme), register as a theme camp. However, theme camp areas are different from others, so the spot you are trying to get will probably be unavailable to you if you do.

Also, just a note: Registering as a theme camp may allow you to "request" a specific area within the theme camp regions, but it does not guarantee placement there. Just an FYI.bx1 wrote:I dunno, my first theme camp year was 2005, prior to that, it was always public camping for us. Should I request to have our camp with its large sound system placed next to you in 2011? I think it'd be great, what do you say?pinemom wrote:Yes, and I will say...even being a huge 6 year Theme Village with street lights and interactivity 24/7 doesnt get you squat in asking for a particular placement!

The sound was not that bad part, actually enjoyed going to sleep by it.
(sound doesnt bother me,some of our village mates but thats what they make earplugs for sleeping, it was the amount of MOOP we had to constantly pick up after suck titty ass phrat wipes that thought they could just drop it anywhere on the way to and from sound camp)
I didnt mind the placement either, I just wished they would have gotten us a heads up...fuck even if only 36 hour heads up, so everyone coming in on early pass could find us instead of wasting away in the car/trucks/trailers in the night hours. To wake up the next day and do a search for where the hell we had gone.
That was all.....
And they already knew(placement) then a email shooting it out to our Mayor could have made it way easy to change addressesesesesesssssss
But there are strange things we do not understand in life...

The only real reason to register is for early entry. Even that is no guarantee. But it is certain you will NOT enter early without placement. BMORG will give you a basic neighborhood near an intersection if you are placed. But it could be 100's of feet in any direction from that intersection.
I suppose if you want to be listed in the WWW and promote specific events that would be another reason to apply for placement.

I'm way on the registration side. Both the early entry is key and listing your events in the program are a must if you want to do serious planning or you want your guests to anticipate and prepare for your events. I guess this is somewhere between me being OCD and an Eagle Scout ("be prepared") but thats the only way for me.
I'd also like to detract from 'The Tragedy of the Commons' statement earlier, as I am a student of the Austrian School of Economics. Such problems can be solved by a moral free market, and in this case I firmly believe that BRC citizens can use both freedom and compromise to peacefully resolve the allocation of land, a veritably unlimited resource.
Thus, freedom is good. Also I choose to register.
