And another thing I just realized. Trish was TEN DAYS post major surgery after SIX MONTHS of chemotherapy. Needless to say, she was a hurting unit all EIGHT DAYS on the playa. But she said when asked by a camp visitor, "I cannot imagine a better place to recover from surgery! You can't see anything like this on TV!" When asked, ",,,will you guys be back next year?" She said, "You fuckin' right we will!" She was 54 years old and still cooked us some kick-ass meals!

So when asked the original question, her answer is, "Suck it up Nancy! Ya fuckin' pussy!"

I second the notion of bringing a second car as a bail out option for any of the camp members. This will allow someone to exit without being a burden on the other camp mates by pressuring them to leave as well.

Take care of yourselves and you will all do fine. Listen to the signals your body sends you. If you or your mates get cranky--Drink WATER!!!! If you think you might be dehydrated drink a liter of water immediately. Then continue drinking frequently until you have to piss.

Always carry water and enough snacks to get you through 6 hours of time. It is great to be able to stay out on the playa doing something fun rather than having to go back to camp for necessities.

The dust storms aren't in reality as bad as you think they are when they are happening.

this is good advice in general for anything that doesn't feel right. Cranky? drink water. Sore Back? drink water. Headache? drink water. Can't recall the last time you pee'd? drink water. Pee looks funny colors? drink water. Tired? drink water.

...this may not fix you, but it is usually a good 1st step that you can do immediately and can bring almost miraculous recoveries.

note that water means water - not beer, or juice, or soda. If you drink gatoraid you may want to diliute it 50:50 with water if you are drinking more than a glass or so.

I went two days post-radiation and getting my 16 catheters removed in 2004. Not as hardcore, but yes, suck it up indeed.

Last year was my first year and I stayed all week. It didn't seem long at all, though I was really looking forward to a real shower by the end of the week. But I'll be the first to admit that last year was an extremely mild year for weather, so YMMV. I'm guessing you'll do fine a far as supplies and stamina. I'd just be sure that the folks you are camping with are not going to drive you nuts with drama. Talk about it all together before you get out there. Everyone in the group is going to have some hard days. Just be sure you all recognize this up front and can help each other when you have your meltdown.
I went alone last year, and I made new friends, but having a crew that you know beforehand can be invaluable out there.

I bring an RV with 8 to 9 folks...some vets some newbies. One of my house rulz is if you get sick, injured, burned out, or bored and want to leave or need to be evacuated, you're on your own...sorry, but that's the way it is. If you don't like the rulz, go with someone else that will take care of your every whimpering need!

I think the ONLY thing that would drag me off the Playa would be if either my boyfriend or myself had a life-threatening illness or injury.
Other than that, my truck stays put and the fun continues. I enjoy my buzz.....nobody can take that away from me.....not even an act of god.
Not that God exists.

Not to argue with the necessity for good hydration in general, and plenty of water in particular, a seasoned urologist I work with recently made the observation, "You know, in all my years, I've never seen an alcoholic with kidney stones."

Sorry to hear that, Eric. I can't imagine how painful that is. I've seen many-a-grown men in tears as a result of kidney stones.
