Smooooooooooth Playa?
Smooooooooooth Playa?
This just in from Friends of Black Rock Newsletter:
"The playa is under more water than it has been for the last 10 years, and we hope that this bodes well for conditions this summer. "
That is awesome news considering it's only February. Would be sooooooo nice to have it super flat and hard this year.

Quite True Sue.
Doubtful it would happen though.
Admittedly, last year wasn't very wet (thus the crap condish) but we were driving on the playa on April 30th during a trip to visit friends in Gerlach.
There were still some wet spots then but the major thoroughfares were dry.
And, the weather at that point was still very "spring". Barely warm days and cold nights.
I wouldn't expect to be able to drive on it till June or so. It'll dry out fast though once the summer weather hits.

Last year was great! 2001. 2007 and 2008 were bad! We will know for sure, come July 4th.

For me, 2008 and 2009 both sucked equally. Being permanently on wheels means that I take all the bumps personally. There is some thought that this might have been the area I was camping in.

I understand, a smooth, hard playa surface comes from lots of water, after, the last freeze.
I could see the water there now, helping disperse the existing dunes.
but, a lot of the uneven-ness (as I understand it) comes from frost heaves if the surface freezes and is still wet.

Once upon a time that seemed to be the case. Certainly hasn't been the case in the last eight years or so. Vehicular traffic into and out of the event pretty much made that generalization a moot point. It may be smooth this year but it will be dusty.

This year actually didn't seem incredibly dusty to me. I think that the cars driving on the road during the rain storm monday compacted the playa. It made some rough clods, but overall it was hard packed on the roads.
