Putting Together A New Camp-Looking For Interested Burners

Post by Danger Dave » Sat Jan 22, 2011 9:00 am

9 time Burner here....my partner and I have put together a theme camp that became very successful...then went in a different direction. Several of us are looking to create something new...we're at the spitballing stage here and looking for some others that might be looking to do something similiar...maybe with us. We're LA based, late 30's, crazy/inventive...

We're also interested in the possibility of satelliting with another camp....so if you have a theme camp and are looking or are open to that, let us know!

Danger Dave, there may be room in Barbie Death Village for another camp. Haven't heard back from all of our camps from 2010 (i.e. Alaska, Boosh: The Canadian Splinter Squad, and Burning Man Button Camp), but we were on three acres last year and probably could make room for a camp of 20 or fewer. You would be on the bottom of the pecking order with regards to obtaining early arrival passes and corner real estate, but some logistics we can work out if you're interested. Last four years or so we have been right around 3:30 or 4 and C, D, or E.

First time Burner here...are there music genre camps? That's probably a stupid fucking question but everybody deserves to be a first timer.

There are dance camps. Electronika or dub step or something that I'm am hopelessly out of step with.
There was a goth camp, but the people doing that moved on.
There's talk about a heavy metal camp (in this very sub-forum!) but it hasn't gelled yet.
I'm sure I'm missing more. Oh yeah, the Hokey Pokey Experience--all Hokey Pokey, All the time.
So far as I know no Polka camp yet, but in the time line of the event and the fact that everything has been done already it's probably due to my ignorance.

I was thinking of something along the lines of Blues or a focus on Guitars

Yes, there have been such camps in the past. The background sound of BRC is hundreds of camps, all blasting some electronic amplified sound. It can be challenging to find a venue inside the city where an acoustic instrument can be appreciated. Center Camp can sometimes be one such venue, and even has a stage. Playing away from the city, away from the amplified sounds, is another possibility. The morning is somewhat quieter, but BRC is never without some camp grinding out dub step or some such. And people tend to want to sleep in the morning...but if you play good Blues or the like, you should have no problems finding an appreciative audience.

Terminal City (3ish and A usually) generally has a small stage, and has no sound camps...you could inquire at the Boobie Bar if they would mind you playing for a bit...(be sure to ask though, there may be other gigs going on like a piano or two...)

Acousticamp would be awesome. Everybody brings a musical instrument, but no amplified instruments or sound systems and no generators. There could be an overhead projector with chord pages displayed for whichever song is being played or you could just bring poster-board with chords. If I wasn't already with Orphan Camp, I'd want to join Acousticamp for sure.

Terminal City is thinking of nixing the stage this year.
