Anybody feel like being a Chaperone?
My 17 year old friend wants to go to burning man with me (18). His parents would be okay with signing the forms and whatnot, but we don't have any friends able/old enough to be chaperones.
How possible would it be to get one of you guys to chaperone :)
We can take care of ourselves, all we'd need would be for you to get him in.

This came up for me and my husband when an 18-year-old I knew wanted to go with his underage girl friend. We weren't asked, for which I am grateful, and we wouldn't have done it. Do you understand that you are asking people who don't know you and don't know your friend to take on a huge responsibility, including being involved in any legal or medical things that may happen, to the tune of I don't know how much money it could get to in really bad cases? And don't say that it wouldn't happen--it's a worst case scenario, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. And 17 and 18 are well within the Years of Maximum Stupidity and Minimum Sense. I go to the burn to have fun, not to fuss and babysit.

Aw shucks...btw, where DID you find amy?!!! She's been missing for...
Seriously, Fishy is so right, perhaps there is a relative willing to take you both?
Good luck, and three or four years isn't too long to wait, is it?

Assuming this is a real post:wefoundamy wrote:We can take care of ourselves, all we'd need would be for you to get him in.
That sentence is the red flag of danger. You do understand that his "chaperone" would have to have papers making them the legal guardian for the duration of the event, right? So that if you two went off by yourselves and did something stupid, like get caught underage drinking, this poor person would now be liable for your actions.
Your friend would also be at the mercy of a stranger for a week. All the person has to do is decide to leave early, and if your friend refuses to go with him the "chaperone" can get any member of the police to make him leave with the person as he's not allowed to be there without. It's not just getting through the Gate- your friend had to have a guardian for the whole event.
It is not something I would let any kid I know do with a stranger.

Re: Anybody feel like being a Chaperone?
Bluntly? Absofuckinglutely not. Not only is it kinda stupid for any of the above mentioned reasons, but what if your "instant chaperone" turns out to be a freakazoid cannibal baby-raper?
This is a public bulletin board - nothing says people here are real burners. We get trolls through here every so often, and some creepaholic could be trolling here waiting for your opportunity to "have you for dinner"...
You have 2 options. One is for you to be the chaperone. The other is to do something else this summer (Yosemite is fracking beautiful that time of year) that doesn't require a chaperone to do and do the burn when you're both 18+.
If you're asking a stranger to be your chaperone... well... it makes me question your ability to make rational decisions for your own safety. Because there are a lot of really fracking bad people out there, and having seen some of the wonky shit that goes down, yes, even at BRC, it takes a certain amount of "rational and thought out planning" to keep your own ass safe out there.
Not saying I don't dig your idea, or your plan, but asking on line for a chaperone is, well, it's kinda like asking a starving wolf to watch your sheep.

I would encourage you to invite an aunt or uncle or older cousin to attend. Family is way more likely to look out for/ take care of their own than an older friend. That goes both ways, parents are way less likely to sue their own brother/sister/ niece/nephew if your friend does something stupid and gets hurt.
I find it hard to believe a couple of teenagers have earned enough money to cover the costs of the trip (not impossible, you don't have to pay rent, afterall) so you should offer to pay/ have your parents/ your friend's parents provide the ticket to the awesome relative that's attending the burn with you. Make it some kind of high school graduation gift during which you/your friend can bond with this amazingly selfless relative.
I'm sure you feel all grown up, but really, y'all are babies, and you're committing to spending a week in a really harsh environment, it'd be highly beneficial for you to have an older, more experienced relative there to help you out with logistics and take care of you.

Oh you guys are all such nervous Nellie's. This person sounds responsible and really, what could happen to a couple of kids on the playa for a week?
I recommend (and nominate) Simon of the Playa to be legal guardian of these two kids for the week. He's trustworthy and he will only show them the finest side of Burning Man.
All in favor, say aye!

NO effing way would I sign up for this...Your looking to get in, and ditch the "chapperone"wefoundamy wrote:My 17 year old friend wants to go to burning man with me (18). His parents would be okay with signing the forms and whatnot, but we don't have any friends able/old enough to be chaperones.

the odds of something happening are low, real low. but the risk is exponentially high, so much exposure. I can think of a thousand reasons not to help you out and only one or two to do this.
Remember, someone's relative makes up statistics.

first of all, i have played sherpa to over 30 people in my 14 or so years on the playa, so screw any of you that havent.
secondly, i have a STRICT half my age rule....and as it stands now i cannot and will not seduce anyone under (lets see, i'm 46, divided by two equals) 24 years of age so none of you motherfuckers can claim "OOHH, gross, she's half his age!"
do the math, she's not....
jealous bastards can't score like you used to so you hate on me...fine...
see if i bring MY Entourage to YOUR shitty camp.

It's a shame, because if this request was genuine, it'd be really nice to have the OP respond to anybody with a mature "wow, that's a good point, I hadn't considered it that way, thanks for the advice" but I guess we are dealing with an immature 18-year-old so that's too much to hope for.theCryptofishist wrote:Does anyone else think that wefoundamy has slunk away, tail between legs, in search of more gullible pastures?
