BURN EFFIGY OF REPUBLICAN CONVENTION AT BRC

Post by cowboyangel » Wed Jul 14, 2004 9:51 pm

Ok..I think this needed a separate thread. For folks that are torn between where to go......we can make an awesomely powerful statement right here on the playa!!!!!! No one can burn like we can...no one.... Those who wish not to participate don't have to. This can simply be on the same scale as the burn of the almighty dollar, last year...or bigger....symbols??? a very large elephant, an oil drill, pics of cheney and the gang etc etc. Ideas gladly received here...and then....lets talk seriously

It'd probably attract a bit more of a crowd AND get your point across if you burned your effigy in front of your local Republican headquarters.

The politics thing at BM is just gonna be a yawner. Where the hell is the creativity in that?

Cowboyangel,

Why do you political idiots continue to fuck up my Eplaya experience with your political bullshit? Politics, Everyday, All day... morning, noon and night.... is not enough? How about the Fuck! Thread? Its not enough for you political assholes? I have to listen to this shit every single time I turn on the TV or Radio. And I am sick unto death of the whole sorry lot.

My suggestion to you. You want to “BURN EFFIGY OF REPUBLICAN CONVENTION”? Make a scale model out of really stiff cardboard, fold in so it has a lot of really sharp corners and stick it up your ass preferably lighting it on fire first.

Just my opinion

calsur, finding myself guilty of some of your assertions, i must apologize for politicizing a very small portion of the e-playa. please avert your eyes at the appropriate time as to avoid the unpleasantness that abounds in the political arena.

CA, your idea doesn't seem very friendly to me, but burn whatever you like, make any statement you like, if possibly don't interfere anyone's experience (see comments above)

you definitely get a PhD in advanced name calling! This betrays some internal stuff you obviously need to work on. Had you crtiqued the idea without all the insults, it might have had more impact....now it's just a rant of hate that puts you into the same camp as some famous republican ideologues like Limbaugh, Savage, Hannity, O'Reilly, Cheney, North, etc etc..

I think the title alone screams politics. How does that disturb someones experience? You see the thread you avoid the thread if you dont want to mess up your experience. My friend was reading eplaya the other day and said, " looks like a community that's having a hard time with thier meds. Why would anyone want to bitch at you for spelling?" ( no relation to you Joel...seriously. It was in relation to a female who had the same complaint way back in september.) which is my point. the small shit seems like it will be sweated forever on eplaya.

Why is that?

Yup, he was part of our group. The gentleman is extremely poilitcal and that was by far the most mild of his rants. BTW- he also has a six foot fiberglass penis/water sprinkler in his front yard that he uses for watering his garden. Kind of a free speech advocate you might say.

Go right ahead and have your burn effigy. Long as you don't complain/interfere with someone having a burn contrary to your views- then it's all good. Though I do agree in principle that trying to ram political messages down throats at Burning Man is kind of rude. Can't you leave all that shit behind you, throw away all the hassles of the 'real world' for a week? I see BM as a vacation/camping trip, and the last thing I want is a political arguement there. So I avoid camps like such and the people in them as if they were the plague. Just my two cents.

Calsur:

When you read the threadname, you might notice that it says the words 'Republican' and 'Convention'. 'Convention' is not a political word in itself, but paired with 'Republican' (which is not a party in itself) it should, if you've been so overloaded as you claim, bring up ideas of an event in August that will be powerful, polarizing, and politcal.

If ya don't like it don't read it.

And frankly, CowboyAngel is one of the most polite and savvy people on this list, including when he's talking about politics. He doesn't rant. He doesn't scream. And he's damn smart.

If you cannot handle that some people recognise that all life is inherently political, or that politics are critical because they effect people's lives, or whatever reason any individual poster has for posting politically (even though frankly, CA's post was far different from any actually political discussion i've seen here) don't read it.

And if seeing the word Republican created that kind of reaction in you, you'd better move somewhere far from this country and the global media. Or have a revolution.

My $0.02... and then some.

totally agree. only problem is that the politics of the powerful make those things impossible (at times) for millions. those millions don't have a choice whether or not to be political.

we're privileged, who think we do have a choice, and in that choice of ignoring, make choices for so many over whom we have a certain amount of control.

but i've explained that before so i'd rather not do it again on this thread.

I mainly posted this idea to generate discussion...I could be wrong but it is my impression that many burners are politically active people......I used the reference of burning the almighty dollar at last year's burn as a kind of sampler of what I'm talking about...perhaps the symbol needs to be more about the kinds of "directions" that lead to more hate and global destruction, I'm not a big fan of the democratic party either, but for environmental, the downtrodden, the worker, the poor, women, minorities, marine health....the republicans by their policies have proven to be our worst nightmares. I don't mind disagreements...it 's the insults that we can all do without.

For Fourth of July we burned a giant effigy of uncle sam on top of an oil rig, with an oil barrel top hat. He was packed with explosives and fireworks and it was a momentous experience. Uncle Scam is as good an effigy as any...

I would point out to Calsur, and whoever else cares to look, that POLITICS is the struggle for power. In foaming at the mouth at Cowboy, demanding that he cease and desist from posting about the RNC, you are engaging in politics.

I'll bet you thought you would sneak that past us, didn't you? You dog!

Right on.

I think i had a teacher once explain that 'politics' comes from the same root word as the Greek 'polis' or city. Politics essentially means 'of the people,' i believe. It's incredibly difficult to escape. I know - I tried for years....

Oh, and Burner... I will disagree with you to a point. Politics and 'religion' do serve mankind well... as far as the transmission of ideas, ideals, mores, and the general glue that binds us together as cultures and tribes. All of the great and noble ideals that we all use (yes, even you) have been handed down to us this way.

The problem comes in when Politics and Religion become mad dogs and get out of control. Then they are used to bash people over the head, oppress, control, and generally serve the ends of the selfish, unscrupulous dickheads (of all genders) amongst us.

The key to survival (political and spiritual) is to pick what serves and reject what oppresses.

Which is why I worship this tree in my back yard, and vote every four years for Richard Nixon. I figure that both of them are harmless.

So what exactly does a "Republican Convention" look like? A big building with doric columns out front? A fat white guy cackling as he steals milk money from orphans? If you're gonna build it/burn it, you hafta have some notion of what it looks like & what it's made of (put salt on it's tail & all that). After all, even at Burning Man, things have to have physical substance before you can burn them.

The neat thing about symbolism is that you can make any symbol mean whatever the hell you want it to mean. I suggest that we make a huge bonfire that looks like a ... huge bonfire!!!! It's perfect!! As the world burns under the heel of Capitalist aggression, the consumers (Fire being the perfect symbol of an all-consuming, out of control creature) are burned in effigy.

But, the problem of using the fire as a symbol is that people will think that the thing being consumed is the symbol. Far from it. The thing being consumed is the anti-symbol.

Sorry... just got so far into the concept that I popped myself back out the other side. I don't understand what I just said.

How about a big Red, White, and Blue, paper mache elephant?

With Balloons? :?

Just as a counter-point... I see the DNC as a Craps dealer on the Las Vegas strip, you just won a MAJOR SHIT LOAD OF MONEY, and the dealer takes it (your winnings) and runs into the middle of the street and throws the money to the wind... while you stand dumbfounded that someoneelse fucked you out of the money and spent it foolishly, and didn't even kiss you when they did....

that is how I see the DNC.

Better to have it tossed to the wind - where it has a chance of being picked up by people on the street - than to have it doled out to the wealthiest 1% of the nation. Of course, if you happen to be in the top 1%, you get to keep all your winnings, plus anything that the losers lost.

I agree with Joel (don't gasp...) but I think it's incredibly ironic that the economy has always done soooooooo much better under the Dems.

Of course, being Marxist (Groucho Marxist) it doesn't mean as much to me. I think the Earth always did much better under the Druids and Goddess worshipers. When is their convention?
