i can't wait to see you all
i can't wait to see you all
hello all, i'm bina, i am from all the way in CT, and i am FINALLY making my way out to the playa this year. i have been interested in burning man for about 3 years or so, but being a girl of few means, it always remained a mystical dream land that i didn't feel like i would ever get to see. the more research i did, the more burners i talked to, the more i felt drawn to burning man... as if it were a place i absolutely HAD to be. i felt that pull getting stronger over the past year or so, and now finally i am in a position in my life where it is feasible not only to get across the country to the playa, but to be as well-prepared as i can be for what awaits me once i make it. i'll be making the long journey by a car packed with gear alongside my other half, hopefully caravaning with some friends, but we're willing to fly solo should coordinating with friends not pan out. since dedicating ourselves to the trip and setting all the plans in motion, i feel like a weight has been lifted from my spirit just knowing what awaits us months away from now. the anticipation may just kill me before the sun has a chance to try once i get there!
i'm sorry for the long winded mushyness, but i felt i had to share my exhilaration with the community i can't wait to know and love. i almost feel like i know you all already, but i know i really have no idea. best regards to you all until we meet in the dust!

Welcome!
Think, spray on sunscreen, or the gooey lotion type, blech, spray on type is best I think.
Also, CT is humid, think about drinking ample water a day or few before you arrive in BRC.
Vitalyte (sp) or gator aid powder added to water might be a good idea, i'll try that 2011 but did not in 2010. I always drank a gallon of water a day, plus at least ONE meal a day.

BM is got all kinds of spiritualness and nirvana and shit...but even Buddhist monks take care of the corporeal side of life.

Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.
thanks for the welcome. believe me, the survival aspects are at the top of my list... that is why i never made it out before, knowing i couldn't afford to get my ticket, get out there, and have everything i need to survive. i am probably the palest bitch you've ever seen, and i would surely keel over on day 1 if i didn't have a beastly shade structure and gallons of sunblock.
my boyfriend and i are big into camping and festivals, so it's not like this is a completely alien concept to us... we just have a lot of expanding to do of our camping gear, since the woods is nothing like the desert. having enough food and lots of water is another big thing... we like to eat, and have no intentions of going hungry or thirsty. honestly, i am having so much fun planning and preparing, i think we'll be ok by the time it actually rolls around. i know my initial post came off awfully corny, but we are taking our survival very seriously. a good friend who has gone the last two years has driven there and back with much less than we plan on having, and did just fine. one thing i was wondering about (and i know you're all probably going to laugh) is desert creepy-crawlies.... scorpions, tarantulas, rattle snakes, etc. how frequently do people encounter them at BM? i would like to think that all the noise and commotion keeps them at a bit of a distance, but i really don't know.

Most of the bugs at Burning Man are imported, by other burners. Their are dragon flies that venture out from the hot springs, but no snakes, tarantulas or scorpions...they're too smart. Your first day or so, lay low during the day, and venture out in the evening...drinking lots of water...and yes! start drinking water way before you reach the playa.

Don't worry about bugs. The playa is a dead sea of desert so to speak. You'll find everything you ever needed to know about the logistics of the trip around here on eplaya. Just remember as you read the snark filled threads, that eplaya is not *the* playa. Don't let them scare you off.
Did you take that picture TomServo?

was hanging out by the porta potties. I'm sure it was a pet chicken, but I'd be damned impressed if it came from Gerlach, to see what all the fuss was about!Dr Jet Sinister wrote:Crazy!TomServo wrote:yes I did..in 2007. about 5:30Dr Jet Sinister wrote:

Well yes, but with some plastic sheeting and inside a tent or other enclosed structure it could be contained well enough. Maybe they could make some 'art' out of it?

that is pretty awesome that there aren't any bugs! i am used to camping with swarms of mosquitoes, with potential for spiders and ticks galore. i am not a big fan of arachnids, so that is great that i won't have to be on my guard for that. i remember reading something about someone getting bitten by a rattlesnake one year, but that was on some random place on the internet, so who knows. thanks for the advice on the water too, i will take that into consideration on the drive.
that chicken is great... i would love to know the story behind it's being there.

i was also hoping for some feedback on our plans for our shelter. do you think it will provide adequate shade, or just trap all the heat? will it most likely blow away? will it protect us well enough from the majority of the dust? this is what we were planning:

this thing, 20x24 feet with the uv-blocking tarp material. we were also going to get some of the 90% shade cloth for either end as well, with a slit in the front one as a door, so we can open it up if we want, or fasten it shut if the weather gets serious. this will be where our little "kitchen" will be. we plan on securing the shit out of it, but i still worry it looks like it wants to blow away.
then inside that, a dome. we were planning on getting the 18 foot one.

i've heard lots of good things about these, and we camp and go to local small festivals enough that we would get good use of it outside the playa, if it stands up to the elements. we'd have a floor in the dome, so we could hide from the sun if it gets too brutal. then, our small tent for sleeping in would be inside the dome. i figure that would be the coolest spot for a morning nap, the most enclosed from the chaos and the elements, and a place for our clothes and other junk.
thoughts? criticisms? by all means, share your opinions before we buy all this. we planed on having it all no later than july, as we planned on testing it all out then. we have property that we camp on in upstate ny, at the top of a mountian. the wind there gets pretty bad, and it tore up our last screen porch type canopy as we were trying to set it up. it would really be nothing like the playa, but we figure it's a good place to test out living in our new home.

Nothing will completely block you from the dust, other than an RV, so bring a respirator or face mask. That Canopy will keep you nice and shady, just remember to anchor the shit out of it! One foot deep at least is a good rule of thumb for your anchors.....peruse Q&A for an anchor that will work for you.BiNa wrote:i was also hoping for some feedback on our plans for our shelter. do you think it will provide adequate shade, or just trap all the heat? will it most likely blow away? will it protect us well enough from the majority of the dust? this is what we were planning:

Some of my fellow campers had a dome just like that one last year and it was SO hot inside of it during the day. If you put in a solar powered vent fan in the top of it, it could be better.
That first shade structure looks like it would allow more airflow and be much more comfortable.
That chicken is still making me giggle. It seems pretty moopy, I hope they cleaned up after it.
