American History Themed Camps
American History Themed Camps
My idea is to have camps where we all dress up as:
colonialists and redcoats on monday
indians and cavalry on tuesday
civil war soldiers on wednesday
WWII soldiers, Nazis, and Japs on thursay
Communists and nukes on friday
and terrorists and oil execs on saturday
We can show cool movies for each days era too, have funny ballots on really old fashioned political agendas, have humorous political debates on subjects that people don't even remember today, and themed food for each era.
There is so much to work with here... I know there are history people out there who would love to reenact all sorts of bogus stuff.
My questions:
Which parts of this have been done before, and how well can they be combined? How effectively can a camp switch gears to do multiple activities if we tie it together chronologically like this?
I was going to call it: camp '1776'

What an excellent idea..
I do lots of Historical Re-enactment here in UK and its big business...
My self employed business is making clothing for re-enactors... would you believe, we have an American Civil War Society here... they are hardcore re-enactors who shun all modern life for a long weekend and their kit is pretty good too...
bit like one of the most hardcore groups in USA, the Liberty Rifles...

Even their jeancloth is accurate down to the millimeter!
Get them involved in your camp as 'prop masters'
I'll get the lace wars people mobilised...
RE-ENACTOR CAMPS ROCK!!

Oh yeah, CW re-enactment is huge, North and South (U.S.). I used to work with a woman who also made clothing for the local group - my costuming for burns most always has a historical bent. There's a group on Tribe for S.C.A. burners, too.Cheyenne wrote:What an excellent idea..

Did you mean "American", literally? I'd love to see a reenactment of the Malvinas/Falklands War.

The idea is we start off each day with legit history and discourse, and we then digress into revelry. We might join ranks and INVADE other areas of the playa, or we could use playa landmarks as battlefield land marks in our reenactments:
"Who the hell is firing off cannons? and why are they flying a huge Canadian flag over those porta potties?!!"
My guess is that we're gonna end up staging all of it with water guns and the less formal parts will degenerate into something between capture the flag and touch football.[/img]

this is too good...
True, the gilded age had prohibition... but it also had... wait for it...
ABSINTHE.
It was also the era of quack medicine... pre-1906 drug laws. Can you say opium den? (ok, scratch that!) but yeah...
Now I must do something to relax, calm down... maybe a round of Short-height BASE jumping... or a free climb up K2...
THIS... is visionary. You pull this off, you'll be one of the reverred...
