Coming from Winnipeg, Canada for 2011
Coming from Winnipeg, Canada for 2011
Hello!
This is my first burn along with my boyfriend and we are both really excited about it. We've attended the Winnipeg folk festival for a couple of years now and decided to try something bigger! Everyone on the board seems really nice and the stories that i've read just keep getting me even more excited.
Can't wait to see everyone in august!

I know that there are a few burners from Manitoba but unfortunately, there is no official regional rep. The Saskatchewan burners would love to know about you ( http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2463926706 ).
Um, the Winnipeg folk fest is not at all like burning man (well in my opinion), I suggest the two of you read through the survival guide http://www.burningman.com/preparation/
Buy travel insurance, ~$60 for both of you is worth every penny.
Good Luck!!
See ya on the Playa.
Love Rice.

Thanks guys!
Ive read the survival guide back to cover probably about 2 or 3 times now, along with the majority of reading on the site.
With the car insurance (we'll probably be renting) i plan on buying enough car insurance so that any act of god is covered. I quite enjoy road trips so i think this one will be pretty awesome. :D
Thanks for the links! i shall be adding them very shortly! I've met a very small amount of people in Winnipeg who go to burning man, a friend had mentioned that they generally hang out 6 and F.

Yeah, that insurance is a good think. Medical transports are not cheap. I'm sort of a super case, but the carbon footprint of my accident is ... well, nothing ot be proud of.

Ah, yeah we'll be getting both (car and health). Nothing like getting sick and having to foot a huge bill on a vacation.
I was wondering, in the survival guide it says to bring 1.5 gallons water/day per person. Do you guys find it easier to bring out a bunch of little 4L water jugs? or a giant container?

I go for "the suitcase", or those 2.5 containers rectangular with handles. I can move one, even one handed, but it uses less plastic than the single serving bottles, and it doesn't have the issues of contamination taking out the entire supply.

I concur, the 4L bottles of water are easy to manage.vosam wrote:Ah, yeah we'll be getting both (car and health). Nothing like getting sick and having to foot a huge bill on a vacation.

One item that adds a level of luxury to you experience is a water cooler. I fill mine with ice and add water. Makes the hot day that much more manageable.
I also have a small backpack with a camelpack, this is great in that your hands are free and you can have some basic supplies with you at all times (think not returning to your camp for 12 hrs at a time). I also carry a collapsible cup (for those random bar experiences), sun screen, baby wipes, some zip bags and Moop bags, hand sanitizer, leather gloves, goggles, dust mask, knife, lighter, snacks, pain killers, meds, copy of my travel insurance info & ID, etc.
We are talking radical "self" reliance, and that begins with being able to take care of yourself regardless of the weather and situation. The desert can be a harsh mistress and blow all your plans to shit. Preparation helps, and if that fails you can always ask someone for help. (There is a difference between needing help due to some disaster and begging for help because one is unable to think beyond this second. ie: "dirty Hippie")
Everyone does their burn differently. What works for someone who has a short trip from Reno is different than someone travelling from Winnipeg. For your first burn, bring the basics, fake it and learn. You will have a better understanding for your next burn. Heck I am going for the fifth time this year and I am not completely happy with my camp or my gear....
Oh, since you are from Winnipeg, you will need lotion. It is super dry in the Black Rock desert (think no humidity).
One more thing, you will need a passport to get into the United States.
Well, thats all I have for random preparation tips today.
See ya on the playa!
Love RIce.

welcome.
Like Cryptofish, for water I prefer the 2.5gal suitcase ones. Easy to manage, less waste, pack better. Cut the top out of an empty one and you've got a shower with a valve.
