looks great...as a craftsperson / artisan i love to look at others labors of love.

for the longest time (over 20 years) i rarely took pictures of all the shit i've made or refurbished, and since each job was a little piece of me i suppose i should have.

the butterfly reverse mirror tile in the background is hot.

So, if one wants to tile a walkway in the backyard what's the best foundation to start with? My roomie thinks that just laying down the odd bits of irregularly shaped stone and marble is enough and that the foot traffic will eventually set the stones so that grass and such will grow between the cracks giving us that old English garden look.

I'm thinking otherwise.

I've done a lot of these, as a stone cutter, and even made the pavers.

there is always a conflict between: best/easiest/cheapest/durability and final and long term appearance.

When you say "tile", do you mean actual ceramic tiles? or, are you thinking pavers/cobbles, of substantial thickness? The thickness and type of material is important. This will help determine underlayment requirements.

I can elaborate here, or you can pm me, with details.
Either is fine.

I agree with you Iso. This is a tricky question because what matters is the layout of the land...how much moisture the area gets etc. When in doubt, pour a cement wire-reinforced bed and set the pavers, quarry stones or other walkway stone there ( better descriptive than tile ) If you set on sand the thing will look pretty for a while then say after a year or two sag, like the tits of an old whore.....can say that here but not on my blog....

DVD I believe you are right. And, at the risk of offending many of the people who post on this board I will further say that out of the many burners who "get it", only a handful have any understanding of how it could work.

the world has been at this crossroad for a very, very long time. I think that the last really big oppertunity to turn the tide was around was at the turn of the 19th/20th century here in America. And there I will leave it.

Except to say that the key here is "Radical Self Reliance."

Well maybe a double handfull.

I've wondered a lot at the behind the scenes influence of Burning Man expieriences.

Say a person has an experience at Burning Man. That person may have influence over some big things and others who effect big things. I sometimes think I see tiny threads in big things leading back to similar experiences.

I've been seeing too much of the negative influences of Burning Man on folks lately. People who become complete phonies, who think they're better than everyone else b/c they attend a party in the desert, people that get way too much into ego & drugs, and being "fabulous", having to always dress crazy & be the center of attention, etc.

This year, I'm going alone for the 1st time (or at least with different people) & I'm extremely excited about that.

Your roommate is correct, if that 'garden' is an abandoned crypt in The Moors.

Is the landlord paying for geotextile, benderboards and quarry sand?
