Under the "Share Resources" forum there is a link to the Burningman Rideshare system.

Under the Regionals & Events forum, I found a listing for a Chicago Decompression event last year which had a link to some Burning Man Chicago people. You might want to meet some people from your area.

From the Burning Man main site, make sure you read the information for first timers. Etc!

Deserts get cold at night--something I learned in 8th grade geography. Clouds (water--what deserts are short on) hold in heat. No water, no clouds, hold in less heat.
There's going to be at least a couple of white outs you'll run into. It varies, some people breeze through, others have more difficulty. I find that the wind gets to me. Also, if you are sheltering in a good spot, and have food and good company, it's going to be a hell of a lot easier than if you are in the middle of the open playa and getting surly.

Not sand storms but dust storms. In fact most of N. Nevada out here in the desert is having one today (very windy) but that's what goggles and dust masks are for. The wind comes up daily but that is part of the charm...
It does get cold out here in the summer at night. Last year on Monday and Tuesday night it was pretty chilly, I think it was low 40's/upper 30's. Also if you're indulging and working up a sweat dancing or running around it will cool you down after the sun has set.
