Paradise Motel - SF Queers return with more Snow Cones!

Our lovely Pink RV, the USS Nancy Reagan, appears to still be running so what the heck, we'll make another venture out into the Playa to serve snow cones to freaks!

Image

We're a group mostly from San Francisco consisting of gay gamer geeks, queers, fruit flies, fag stags, furries, gay for pay, PFLAG moms, steampunk graphic novelists, str8 boys in a bro-mance, occasional drag queens, barristers, rice queens and a houseboy. Who aren't afraid to sit in an air conditioned RV eating bacon. Mmmmm bacon.

Image

You've driven from your bright shining Metropolis to travel down some winding old road, route 69, or 666 ... who knows, and you discover a vestige of The American Dream of bygone years: the Paradise Motel. Come sit and relax by our (fake) pool and have a snow cone which our DJ spins you some beats.

Image

This will be our 4th year attempting to serve snow cones on the playa. We hope to add some new features like an art project, gay dance party or a shade structure that doesn't blow away. (But no talk of any mutant vehicle, or people will be beaten.)

Image
We have more pics of our 2010 camp here, our 2009 camp here and our 2008 camp here.

Image
We have a website at http://www.desertparadise.org if you'd like to check us out or contact us.

Did I mention we love bacon?

Now I have to hunt you out next year.

Abercrombaby:

Yes, it true that it's a bitch to be out there AND a party like no other. The real key to having it not be a really bad experience is prepare, prepare, prepare. You can't just decide the week before to go and just run out there like it's a trip to Vegas. It's gonna require some prep time on your part to figure out what you'll need to bring out with you to survive, and how to get it all out there. Our camp has made some helpful lists of stuff you'll need to bring with you. Spend a few weekends gathering up the stuff you'll need: tent, bike, etc. You may just end up saying "girl, that's just too much work" and you'll know Burning Man isn't the thing for you. But if you DO put the effort into it, trust me it's worth it!

Don't worry about a dome. They are fun but not something you wanna try to do your first time. Just get a nice sturdy tent and you'll be fine. Don't go for the cheapest K-Mart tent you can find, you'll be sorry. RVs are nice, but really expensive. They charge upwards of $5,000 to rent one for the week of Burning Man, so even divided amongst 5 or 6 people that's at least $1,000 apiece. Seriously just spend a couple hundred on a good sturdy tent.

Joining or creating a theme camp can really enhance, or ruin your Burning Man experience. You may want to get a group of friends together that live near you and all rent a RV or truck and get a big tent and go together. That's how our theme camp started. Or you might want to join an established camp. Gayburners.com posts a list of gay camps. Different camps will provide different services and require you to do different things. Some will have shared meals (expecting you to pay for a percentage of the food and help cook / clean) or have rented a truck that you can use to haul your stuff out. Most will expect you to help with camp activities. In our camp, that entails serving snow cones to folks in a skimpy apron outfit at some time during the week. Some of the bigger camps with more ambitious activities will require quite a bit of work out of you.

For your first year, don't try anything too ambitious as far as fancy dome, trying to take on a lead volunteer position or really elaborate gifts to give out. Your first time you'll want to just see what it is all about and get acclimated to the climate and culture so if you want to come back you'll know what to expect and have a better idea of how you can contribute.

We submitted our placement questionnaire, so hoping we will qualify for a spot this year.

Here is the "blurb" for the guide we submitted:

Paradise Motel is the most garish of roadside motels; yet the best of the "no-tel" genre, where weary travelers are invited to stop in for a snow cone and enjoy some progressive beats while lounging by the "pool". This year's roadside attraction is Dirty Summer Camp, where you can re-live your most capricious teenage memories...or the ones you wish you'd had... Snow cones served daily, gifts of unopened bags of ice are greatly appreciated.

And here is our proposed layout:

Image

We are hoping the placement folks will put a bunch of the gay camps near each other again this year and that we can be in the "gay-bourhood" like last year. Crossing fingers!

Very thoughtful of you to provide a spot for canoe parking out front.

I'd been worried where I'd put mine up until now.
Worry is a misuse of imagination

He kept it hid And so did she.
They searched for blue Their whole life through,
Then passed right by- And never knew.”

I find this post horrifying. If the name "Abercrombaby" wasn't enough to make me projectile vomit—then there is the content. Wanting more torture, I clicked through to this person Facebook page and found it so anger producing I found it difficult to sleep last night...

1. Yes, it's hardcore. Yes, it's a party like no other. However, if that is all you are expecting, you would be missing out on the wider experience. And, thats right—NO cell phones, means no fucking texting. Lesson 1: Immediacy http://soundcloud.com/aquaman/feel-me-u ... ucker-live

2. Your mall drag (Aberzombie/American Eagle/Hollister, etc) is fucking lame.

3. You list on your Facebook page under "people who inspire you" as Martha Stewart, and several reality TV stars housewives. Seriously--That's pathetic and embarrassing!

I would like to recommend you turn off your TV, and not read any American news for a year. Maybe travel to Europe. Read up on some cultural theory, and contemporary art practice perhaps. By the looks of things , you've got a long way to go. and I'm not convinced burning Man is for you, and vice versa.
"If you're out there you're vulnerable. People prefer to disappear in life, to repress their personality. That's not living. It's dying. I see them all over the place, the walking dead."

Hey all- 23 "artist?", male, gay---------

Looking for a rideshare/ camp joining opportunity to Burning Man this year, im a virgin  as they say, but i have extensive camping, carpentry and design experience.

I'm looking to stay the whole week and perhaps some time for set up before hand. I'm totes willing to help out on gas and other supplies, I've got some great stories to share, some rinky dinky tunes to play, and some picture drawing ability for rememberance and joyful gazing upon.

I'm also looking to volunteer or colab on some art or performance. I've got a bunch of kinetic sculptures im building and would love to add them to a greater piece or help build something together. Also im wanting to help with stage design/setup and camp design/setup if possible.

Last but not least - im a pretty good comfort food cooker- my enchiladas will give you warm fuzzies

thanks for reading my lifes story apparently,
please contact me here or my email---

thanks
eric

Oh boy, you're going to be my (Costco Soulmate Trading Outlet 8 and E) neighbor!

We love SF queers, we even have a few of our own.

We should have a little block social.

Maybe the world's shortest bar crawl? Dance party that moves from one side of the block to the other? GERMAN SPARKLE PARTY?

Jester,

I do believe that like last year, a bunch of the gay camps have been placed between 7-8 around E. Looks like we'll have a 'gayborhood' again!

Well it looks like they moved us.

Actually, I don't know why I said "It looks like" because I should just have said that placement moved us.

We'll have to visit the gayborhood, I guess we just couldn't afford the rent.
