Playatecture Tour

Post by robotland » Mon Jul 19, 2004 9:19 am

Okay, I know that there are plenty of folks that get mighty lit up about domes and shade structures and contraptions and "vernacular architecture" and such......What say we meet up on-Playa and tour around some of the city's buildings? I'm thinking that mid-week or later might be better, giving people a chance to get their edifice erected so-to-speak....and to give us an opportunity to waypoint the sites and sights. Thoughts? Suggestions?

I'm in. Sounds like lots of folks are bringing new structrual experiments this year and I definitely want to check out some of the established structures in more detail. It would be great to have some time set aside to do that rather than trying to approach a builder and ask questions while she/he is in the middle of something else.

Thoughts:

1) A meet & greet and/or scheduled walk would be fun. Anytime is fine with me except 8-9 am and 3-5 pm weekdays (camp commitments). Hell, I would even be willing to help host (30' 5/8 3v dome).

2) Some type of map would be cool. Once the registered camps get assigned we can start a layout against the giantmonster map. That way if some folks can't make a scheduled tour they can still make a reasonably efficient traversal of the city to see any structures their builders are willing to list. Here's an example with a little red "1" along 4:30 (kind of where our camp was last year).

3) I was already planning to bring a PC out to download photos to the hard drive; MOOP factors aside, no problem bringing a printer to bang out maps more or less on the fly (or at least once a day) for some limited number of folks (up to a few hundred). Folks with structures in unregistered camps can get theirs added to the next map version anytime during the event.

Further thoughts?

I like the map idea! Those that allowed themselves to be indicated would thereby be forewarned about "tour groups" investigating their structures. Suggested visiting hours could be included, too.

Idea?

Post by Burp! » Mon Jul 19, 2004 5:05 pm

We had an idea that we gave up on due to lack of time "Black Rock Reality" Take people out to look at property in your golf cart, put up "for sale" signs next to people structures. Randomly bring tours of people in and show off the digs. Take pictures of peoples places and make "for sale" flyers.

Be pretty funny if someone came into your dome with a group of people, "This is a 30' X 15' Dome, very popular with the Burning Man folks these days. As you can see they have some nice carpeting and the southern view of the playa is magnificent in the evenings. Only one block from the bathrooms too!!!"

Hey, I was planning on doing something similar this year. I'm working for Lahonton Lakeside Properties. Might I interest you in something on the Esplanade, or were you thinking more suburban?

I love the sound this, you can count my newbie ass in. Unfortunately due to time, travel and cost restraints I am stuck with a commerical tent but would love to find out more about what goes into a custom job. Have no limitations of when or where so just call me easy.

P.S. I work in a cartographic office and so if any assistance is required for map production I would be willing to volunteer my services

I offer "Parade of Domes" as a title for this endeavor. It'd be hilarious to make up a page like the Homes magazines have, featuring shots of structures and copy like,"3V 38' Dome with walkout, evap pool, Empire schools"....

Well Black Rock Gazette and Piss Clear are the only print sources on the playa that I know of. Hmm, this would be fun. Please keep in touch, Robotland, I'd like to get involved, or at least offer to show off some of these "properties" for new arrivals looking for a "home."
