Well I can't say why the OP put it here but I can say that it is very helpful to us newbs to see who is coming how far.jkisha wrote:Why is this thread in the "introduce yourself" forum?

Kind of like y'all are introducing yourself back at us. Which is nice, and I thank you.

Oh man...be prepared for a L O N G drive...lots and lots of two lane.MyDearFriend wrote: ETA: 2,648 from my homebut I will be flying to Vegas, so only 494 miles driving.
A bit of advice. Treat each town as a speedtrap in waiting. Trust me, your pocketbook will appreciate the warning.

It's funny... I once drove 8000 km through the USA, and I never once had any issues with speedtraps/tickets. But, whenever I used to drive between Calgary and Edmonton, I'd get a lot of tickets. One time I got a $500 ticket for speeding without my insurance or registration and a split in half driver's license.

Lets see....
Google maps tells me it's someplace between 4,749 and 5,028 miles all told (not including any backtracking, sidestepping or crow-flying).
Google maps also tells me that only somewhere between 776 and 889 of those will be in a car, the rest being flown so as to have the extra time in preparation before entry and dedustification time prior to our return.
My brain has trouble with those figures as it is in constant quarrel with my heart who tells me that it may well be a state of mind that has no computable linear distance. If you're not there, you're too far away. And there's no such thing as TOO FAR away. It might as well be on the moon. Lookit me. I'm going to the moon!!!
My pocketbook squeals "Starvation". If I had a financial planner, it would scream "Madness".
But my heart. Again. Soothes with the promise of "HOME". And a smile settles on my soul with the very thought.... erasing the miles.
I'm so there right now.
So yeah. I'm local enough.

Thank you for the warning! I grew up rural, so, I know how that goes.Kinetic V wrote:Oh man...be prepared for a L O N G drive...lots and lots of two lane.MyDearFriend wrote: ETA: 2,648 from my homebut I will be flying to Vegas, so only 494 miles driving.

I am planning to leave Vegas around midnight, unless you think that's unwise. Will there be critters on the road?

YES! K.V is right! Be careful for the towns, I've avoided tickets everytime, BUT, they tried and I wiggled out of a ticket! Agh! *shudder* for going TOO SLOW once, then TOO FAST another time, go figure? (revenue traps?) yikes.MyDearFriend wrote:Thank you for the warning! 295 easy miles from Bishop to Gerlach. I have my own private highway that starts at the edge of town and glides along whorehouse highway through Nevada. Past Indian Fireworks and Army depots near Walker Lake. I stop at the Fallon Walmart for rest and provisions then join up with the rest of you at Wadsworth.
