I will write up a PM like normal click "submit" and then it sits in the Outbox and never gets sent and transfered to the Sentbox.

They were working fine 2 wks ago so not sure what the issue is.

not a fucking idiot, at all. It's not in the "instructions".........you gotta be told how it works.
So, when whomever you sent those to, reads them, they'll be gone from your outbox.

I don't fucking understand it. We have ways to rescue people in all kinds of situations...hell we even have plans in place to cover for a fucked up shuttle launch and save people in space. But yet we lack the ability to go 200 feet down an old mine shaft and pull someone out. County officials call in a priest to administer last rites and then say we're leaving him to fucking die.

Surely America can develop the technology to allow for even a basic rescue attempt to be made.

As for the county officials who left him to die, you have blood on your hands. Karma's a motherfucker...maybe next time it will be one of your family members who gets hurt somehow...and maybe they'll get told Sorry...there's nothing we can do.

It's total fucking bullshit.

Fuckin' search and rescue guys aren't easily dissuaded. They would cheerfully risk their own fucking lives to get to someone on the fucking flimsiest of chances, so if they said it couldn't be done, they were almost certainly fucking right. The guy was pushing his thirties and damn well should have fucking known better. But the fact that he had five kids may fucking indicate that he's not really good at looking before he fucking leaps.

I don't want to bash first responders...not at all. But I'm wondering if there is a way to develop some kind of gear to make these kinds of rescues a bit easier..or to make some of what's now impossible maybe a bit more possible...

And oh yeah...it's a beautiful fucking day in Vegas....

If it makes any difference, Kinetic, I'm sure that those same first responders are working on all sorts of ideas. And those mine shafts are really fucking dangerous. It was probably a miracle that they didn't cave in back when they were being worked, and now whatever supports they have are old and creaky.
I didn't take it as SAR bashing, I just have a soft spot for them. As well as anger at young men who do stupid things (and then there's all sorts of money spent on rescue attempts), even though I might agree that it's genetic. And believe me those SAR guys will do all sorts of things to get down someplace and help someone. And they are adrenaline junkies who'd be going down mine shafts themselves for thrill if they didn't go down to rescue them. Believe me, if they said they can't do it, they went everything they could think of them and there was probably a lot of experience talking over possibilities.
As for tech--there isn't one easy answer. Every rescue is different. Different dangers, different needs, different problems, different injuries. If they had something for this one they might or might not be able to use it in the next fall into a mine. I don't know how they could stabilize loose rock...even temporarily-which is what it would have to be, permanent isn't in the cards. Splitting a hard hat isn't tearing a fingernail.

My mindset is moving towards funding...Colorado has Alpine Search & Rescue teams that can work rescues in some tricky places like high angle ascents and even some mine situations. Perhaps some of their best practices and their gear could be applied in a situation such as this.

I agree the guy shouldn't have been in there. But I also know Nevada's got a program in place to seal off some of the most dangerous mines...to prevent these sorts of things from fucking happening in the first place. With Gov. Sandoval's budget ax swinging hard and fast maybe fighting to keep that particular budget item intact would be a starting point.

I just think something needs to be done to prevent a repeat. Maybe working the media contacts to increase the airing of ads for mine safety...and maybe throw in a programming punch with PSA's about hot springs too. I'm just thinking of what can be done besides me sitting here fucking bitching about it.

Edit: It's really been a perfect day. For once nothing fucked up, the pool is heated, our whole family is finally here, and it was a great day. Oh and I got free tickets to tomorrow's NASCAR race...literally it's been a perfect fucking day. And those are rare.

Most Nevada land is government land, with the lion's share (80%?) fucking federal. And there's not a lot of money there. Even if we stopped the wars and put the money back where it belongs (like we never have in my lifetime) it would take a long while to trickle down to closing tens of thousands of mines in a sparsely populated places. It's vile to weigh one young man's life in this way, but we end up doing it anyway. I have no objection to psas, those are comparatively cheap. Unfortunately, the young men who are looking for danger to prove themselves are the ones most likely to do something that dumb and are also the ones most likely to deliberately ignore the ads. Not something that a creative agency couldn't solve.

edited to add a fuck.

I've had a discussion on this topic with a former Navy Seabee and I like his idea. A couple of sticks of dynamite, or maybe a little bit of military grade explosives would do just fine for closing up the entrances to some of them.

The whole idea of closed mines is about like pipeline safety...nobody thinks about that either until a pipeline blows out in a giant fireball...

In any case this is the Fuck thread and I'm going off topic..I'll shut the fuck up now or try to...

Fuck, google Utah's Nutty-Putty cave, used to be one of the the premier spelunking caves in the area. It is now a grave. 2009, right before Thanksgiving, a guy with with friends, had done it dozens of times before, stuck headfirst down in a narrow passage. Father of a young family, not some adventurer. It played out on TV, hour after slow hour. They did get a cable down to his feet and got him up a bit, he was even talking to his family. The winch broke as I understand it. He slid back down, and each breath would send him deeper into the narrow opening. A fucking nightmare.
Fuck, that is so fucking sad. Not the same, but very fresh in my memory.

Utah has an abandoned mine reclamation project, but it is severely underfunded, of course. Some are historic sites, others are homes to endangered bats. BLM estimates we have between eight to ten thousand mines in our state alone, no one has ever done the full inventory. When hikers vanish, there's always a chance they're in a mine somewhere.

Hey, Utah teaches abandoned mine safety in school, or at least has the option:
http://ogm.utah.gov/amr/AmrEdu.htm

You can't just seal them up at random, each one has to be treated differently. Stuff like bat gates.

Fuck Fishy
I don't know if the guy was an idiot or not, he might have just wandered up to it to look, no knowing the opening had been undercut. I haven't read any reports yet that have said he was roping in to explore it.

Accidents happen, real quick, you know that. He wasn't doing anything that I know many eplayains haven't done themselves, me included.

As far as sealing up all the old mines, fuck off, more people are killed on bicycles each year.

Sad times when the best reading ePlaya has to offer is found in the "Fuck!" thread. I agree about things getting a little stale lately, not that that stopped me from posting my own garbage... we seemed to have contracted some sort of illness, like a type of "Bieber Fever" it's going to take a massive dose of Penicillin to stop the itching and burning...
