Greetings friends!

Post by The Biz » Thu Mar 03, 2011 11:56 am

Hello!

I'm American and have been to Burning Man once so far and have plans to go again. I miss home! :(

I'm a Sociology and Anthoropology major at Uni and am currently writing a paper on BM. I have a survey I'd like to post on the site but am new to EPlaya. Is there a specific topic under which I should post it?

Cheers!

Biz

Well, honestly...you are not likely to get a LOT of help on eplaya for a paper or survey...

You may try under "open discussion"

No promises you won't get eaten alive.

Welcome.

I'm the moderator here, and truly, posting a poll about Burning Man for a paper, ... not a great idea. You will likely get more flak than helpful responses. However, since you have attended once, if you juggle it carefully, people will respond well. We just get so many students in here, have never been, just want some raw data to help with their homework. Makes eplaya feel like a zoo on view. Look at the freaks, maw, let's ask them in they like butt-sex.

So. What is the focus of your paper? Why do you think this narrow little band of fuckos can help?

wow thanks for the advice and pre warning VeganChoirGirl!

thanks for the welcome jkisha!

AntiM - my experience at BM is my reasoning behind the paper. If possible I'd be doing all my research there and writing from personal experience, however the spring terms ends in May and my prof wont allow me to write based on personal experience because I will not be attending the event during the term considering it's not until September and suggested a survery of sorts. I will take your advice into consideration for I do not wish to offend or upset anyone. Burning Man was life changing for me which is why I've also chosen to incorporate it into my education.

My focus of the paper is a general over view of who goes to BM, why they go, how many times they've going, their involvement there whether it be buikding an art car, bulding a camp, camp activities, or just observing and taking things in, what about BM attracts them to it, etc... questions like that... nothing asking about butt-sex or drugs or the like. It's for a subcutures class and I could write on something like homeless people, GLB, but those don't excite me like the thought of home does. I'll be doing a presentation for my class and want to show BM for what it is, a community of people who are free to be who they are and express themselves without judgement. However to do this I need the info to back up the paper and presentation. I'd like to get general info on the people who chose to respond as well such as age, gender, occupation, race to give a background of the diversity of people who attend. Another requirement from my prof is that this paper be based solely on interviews as an ethnographic study of sorts. It is not a research paper so whatever data I use has to me collected by moi.

That was a very long response!

Hope you're having a great day... please feel free to share you thoughts about me possibly posting a survey now that you know a bit more of the background.

Not compulsory. However, it is a recommended add on. Please see page 67b of the manual for further details.

Actually, a lot of that info is buried throughout the board. There's threads on who we really are, but offhand I can't recall the titles. There's one on ageism too. In Open Discussion several pages back. OD call be a strange place to navigate, especially these days before everyone get s to work on their projects. Idle hands and whatnot.

Perhaps start a thread in Experiences, talk about what you're doing and why (just as you have here) and then add a poll which can be visited through a link for those who do want to help. Polls here get messed with. This isn't a very big slice of the playa, heavy on the newbs, heavy on the clowns. You won't find better people, or worse. Hehehe.

Perhaps the Census people would be of help? I don't know their contact info, but I'm sure you could hunt them down.

There is apparently a Census Camp based in Tucson: [email protected]

2008 Census
http://afterburn.burningman.com/08/census/index.html

No more recent (comprehensive) census seems to be available in the same spot, though. I did once see a really interesting Census but I think it was an paper item I received at Gate with my map and other things. It had info about gender, race, sexual orientation, occupation, income; it was really interesting. Someone else might remember what I'm talking about. I think it had little images showing the size and shape of the 'Man and his platform over the years.

There are Afterburn Reports, though 2010 is not up yet:

I learned a tremendous amount by wasting my employer's time looking through the ePlaya and I'm glad I did. I love to be prepared and I have a habit of making things up as I go along or being spontaneous.

I can be spontaneous becasue I'm always prepared and esearch EVERYTHING.

OK, about this "butt sex," after some careful research on Craigslist, cliphunter.com and asstraffic.com, it seems it is possible to insert a penis or other larger things like fists into an anus for the purpose of pleasure and spraying body fluids. Interesting. I need to research this further.

For what they pay me, how dull and trustrating this job is and how two of us are here expressely to fulfill a line in a contract, it doesn't bother me.
