Oh, Charlie, Charlie, Charlie....

Well, I for one am not tired yet of hearing about Charlie, Charlie, Charlie. I thought for sure someone would be either (1) bashing AA for being a cult with only a 5% success rate, or (2) bashing poor Charlie for getting a bit excited this week. Personally, I'm on Charlie's side.

well AA worked for me. but i'm just a drunk. the extra stuff that came out after i got sober i attended to with therapy. there are WAAYYY to many people trying to use AA as group therapy for issues way beyond being a drunk. use the right tool for the right job and thinks work better.
charlie has more issues than AA needs to deal with. and he is fascinating to watch from a distance, thank you god that there is at least one whackadoodle out there that I am not related too. i deal with untreated bi-polar and/or other mental health issues with family members and it's not quite as much fun close up and personal.

if i were a guy, i'd give my right nut to be able to drink like that
i really really really miss a glass of wine with dinner. i'm best off leaving that to you guys.
i got a call from my mom about ole charlie. we both had that little twinge of recognition that makes our guts bind up when our family members start tweeking and we know what's coming.

monkeypoo - that ain't no bullshit right there. I whole heartedly agree. The Mopac rapist was a very good friend of mine in AA. when sober, was a tormented kid, then the voices started up in his head and he'd rape someone, then go drink/drug. alcoholism is just a symptom. some of those people are maniacs. Once upon a time i did a little speech at treatment centers about retaining your brains, not everyone in AA is spiritual and in it for the sobriety. i'd warn about people with years of sobriety hitting you up (if they have years of sobriety and they think you are the cutest little thing they ever did see and you too can stay sober if you only do EVERYTHING THEY SAY, perhaps they're a nut?).
some centers ran me out, others called me back.

I had a relative who was bi-polar; if he spent any time at all in California, he'd go off the deep end. Same with drugs, had to stay away. I was there for some of the more spectacular breaks with reality. He moved to Utah and it was like night and day, not a single problem. Until he died of cancer, which sucked.

Hi ya Poo!!!!! I have missed you!!!!!
If it weren't for AA, people I love would not be alive. I am grateful for it every day.
FWIW, Charlie is simply not functioning in the same reality as is the rest of the universe. He insists he is okay - which is pretty much the first clue he isn't. He can have his public hookers and blow, (oh, sorry, "goddesses") but expecting to keep his children living in the same place with the hookers and blow is a tad....uh....NUTS.

Mule! Missed you too! Moon! Graid! Mojo! You too! Been reading the stories. Good stuff, but I agree that the media needs to lay off now. It's a repeat of Robert Downey Jr or any other star for that matter. Must be tough for them sometimes... Yeah, must be tough getting paid $2MILLION per episode on a show. Man-oh-man. We're in the wrong business, friends. We need to pack up the ol' hillbilly stationwagon and go to Beverly Hills and take up acting!
On AA and NA? Yeah, I am glad for them too, to an extent. They saved my ass 22 years ago and helped me quit meth for good since 3-17-89. I had longtime sobriety til 1995, then started self-medicating again with RX pills and booze. It's like what they say - the booze & pills are just a symptom. When I remove those things, and get my bipolar meds regulated (and stay ON them), I'm a whole different person who can deal with all that underlying stuff, and I can figure out why I did the self-destructive things I did. So, yeah, AA/NA saved my life many times when my ass was falling off and I had nowhere to go anymore. But then there came a time when things just stopped making logical sense. My questions were answered with slogans and what-I-call "program-ese". I'm not powerless. I can manage my life today. I'm not a defective person. Maybe quirky... Try as I might, I can't turn things over and wait for answers from Mr. Invisible or a Higher Power, or a Tree, or a Door Knob or a Group Of Drunks. If there's a power, it's an Inner Power inside of me. Inside of you. We all have it. Sometimes I stay away from the rooms but then I get newcomers calling me, saying they miss me, that they need me. And that's part of the program that I do like - giving back. People picked me up, dusted me off, held me, helped me, and put up with my own crazy Sheen-anigans. I like helping the newbies. They're as scared as I was. But I'm not doing anymore of those stupid steps. The past is done and gone forever, Confession is for Catholics on Sundays, and all that matters is TODAY.....and that WEEK in Aug/Sept when we all get to get together again. xoxo

oh p(*)(*) i lurve you! so much of what you said there made total sense to me, and sheen-anigans +23 i thinks
in my experience that crazy scared people are the best they are always having to try and i had stopped trying, you just reminded me of that in a roundabout way.

I really don't have words to describe how excited i am about burningman. After i got sober i turned UBER responsible, poured all my time and attention into my family. we ended up with six kids (only two of them remember me ever drinking) and that was where i concentrated my creativity. and i do have to say, we have done a fantastic job raising six beautiful souls. This event is the first time i've spent time being creative for me. I wore a tutu this morning while doing laundry and other chores! swirled some face paint around my eyes cranked the music and danced. The spirit of burningman is already freeing my soul, and i haven't even gotten there yet.

Tamara that's FANTASTIC!!! I have been running around here in a wife-beater, painting interesting designs on my new clothes, having long heart-to-hearts with my son about growing up and making transitions, carrying all the old selves along with us and standing on their shoulders at the same time...tamarakay wrote:

I LOVE THIS!!!
There is stuff we have to get through, and I heard once, it doesn't mean you should sit down in it and start playing and making pies and such. keep slogging. Poor Charlie and the environment of yes the commodity people live in. Too many folks making big money off of him to want to get him the help that would remove him from the money stream. Even showing his breakdown is making money. Yeah, up close and personal it aint amusing. "Some of us are sicker than others" was a phrase that came in handy when learning who could help steer me in the right direction. 4/9/94tamarakay wrote: I wore a tutu this morning while doing laundry and other chores! swirled some face paint around my eyes cranked the music and danced. I just got up. Been reading here for about an hour. I love you people.
There's this story I wanted to pass on. Kinda funny now that I look back. There's this 72 year old woman/friend/old-hippy/mentor I have come to adore over the last year here. She has 31 years clean/sober. I eventually asked her to be my mentor/sponsor/whatever. Her aura/energy is beautiful. She isn't your Stepford Wives brand of Recovery. She took me under her wing and told me to read that damn AA Big Book 3 times from cover to cover. I thought she was nuts. I grumbled under my breath for months, but I did it. After all, it's what her sponsor had her do 30 years ago, and she related to me that it worked for her and that it would work for me. I read it. After doing so, I was told I never have to read that book again, if I don't want to. I can't wait to pass this nugget on to a newbie someday...

I don't think AA is good at all, but many of the people in it are. Just like any religion, which it clearly is (IMO). Many people in AA are helpful and do wish to aid others, but as a rule their organization is a cult-like trap that mostly doesn't even work. It's a good thing for the few people for whom their program works, so good for them!

Your soul will be freed. Keep dancing in your tutu so you can be in perfect form in August. I hope you make it to the M&G at Barbie Death Camp on Friday. You can connect the faces to the names. Don't forget the tutu.tamarakay wrote:shambalalala!

This is a wine bistro, but there is no pressure to have a glass. You'll be so busy meeting new friends, that you won't even know there is wine there.
