Some sweet Theme Camp projects on Kickstarter

Hey Everyone I was looking around on Kickstarter at all the Burning Man related projects and they look pretty sweet! maybe some of you guys will check these out, they all seem like some pretty cool thing that might be out on the playa this year!

Already donated to two projects. Going to be my first year and I want to do more then just be there. Trying to support as many as I can. Excited to see all the creations on the playa.

So I'm confused, are we talking about "Art Projects" or "Theme Camps"? I just don't understand why a theme camp would be seeking donations for their camp. I thought theme camps were self funded by dues from people that are members of the camp and possibly by having fundraising events like dances and such. A much different animal than an art project.

Maybe someone can explain this to me as I think this is already the third thread for people looking for funding for theme camps. Or should I also start a donation thread for our theme camp. Sure would be nice to have my expenses to the burn paid for by the generosity of complete strangers.

...not everyone that is a "member" of a camp must camp there, and it is possible to be a "member" of more than one camp at once....and remember, corporations essentially count as "people" these days (can even give unlimited amounts to politicians)...and some camps are certainly funded by corporations...some camps are even run for profit...and the experiment continues...

perhaps it is time for us all to write up kickstarters to fund our burns...

Some theme camps are very interactive and take donations to run that part of the camp.

It's just interesting to me that in how many years and how many posts on eplaya, I don't recall ever seeing requests for funding for theme camps. Art projects, yes.

I am aware that theme camps like deep end or whatever they are calling themselves now hold fund raising events and take donations on their website, just none have come across to me as being as mercenary as these recent posts.

Oh well, live and learn.

I think it might be, but don't get me wrong, I think it's a wonderful platform for funding art projects. Its use for theme camp funding just raised an eyebrow. No big deal, really. Just wanted to clarify my thinking on it.

I dont think Kickstarter is that new, but after last year and the Burning Man people sending out all those emails about it and how all those cool art projects used it, I think more people are using it for fundraising!
I think its just fine for theme camps to use kickstarter! its just another way to raise funds, especially for camps that arent really big enough to throw big fundraisers. its a good way to raise a little money!
Theme camps do alot for the Burning Man community shouldnt they use what ever means they have to help afford all the wonderful gifts(booze, etc...) they provide!

and except for the clockwork orange camp the others havent posted anything asking, I just found those ones to be cool and mainly the ones Im interested in, thats why I posted them on here!

We would love to use Kickstarter to pay for any number of things that our camp requires on an annual basis.Things that currently come from dues or the partners pockets.I am not sure though how you get around this caveat found on all Kickstarter pleas.

What if our camp does not reach the goal?We will be coming anyway and if above logic is applied we should be entitled to the money regardless.Probably best for camps just starting out but still it would seem some track record preferred.

I always thought that what theme camps provided to BM was their gift. So, following the logic, if our camp wanted to provide root beer floats on the playa but couldn't afford to buy what we needed, we should advertise for money to bring this 'gift' to the playa. Why not just put out a box next to our service bar for donations right on the playa then? Or why not just put up a sign "root beer floats $1.00"

I like that aspect of Kickstarter! unlike art projects, when it comes to theme camps use of Kickstarter I think it should be used more to offset other fundraising. it shouldnt be the exclusive means of fund raising for a camp, as that might not work out.
The Champagne Lounge kickstarter is looking to raise 300 dollars for a open mic set up. its a smaller amount, obviously not enough to pay for a whole open mic set up, but enough to cover some of the cost that might go along with it, maybe shipping, or instruments, or something.
I think that would be the best way for a theme camp to use kickstarter, small goals that could be met easily, but if they arent it isnt going to affect that much.
If a theme camp ran a bar, getting like 200 bucks from kickstarter for like mixers or chasers wouldnt be all that bad.
they just shouldnt get greedy and expect to get it for sure!

sorry if that was rambley, my class is super boring but it makes it hard to keep of a train of thought...

Thank you for the great words Magic Cannon Cat.I don't know how I feel about Theme Camps raising money. For art projects, it is more hit and miss. We'll need around $3500 for two of us to build and bring the Pink Elephant. We are seeking $2000 from our Kickstarter project, meaning we will still have a lot of out-of-pocket espenses. If we do not get $2000 from Kickstarter, we are not bringing the Pink Elephant. Theme Camps are not going to say they aren't coming because they did not get funded.

For Beau Le'Phant, we are also organizing local events to try and offset the $12-1500 we need, above Kickstarter, to make this work. Beau is not a 'party barge'. It can transport 8-10 people on it's back and some in it's belly, but it is more art than party.

I am not saying I think it is the correct way to go, just that people are doing it and the Org appears to be OK with it...silly me, I have been funding my own Burns all these years (well, me and Bank of America!)

LOL Ya, me too! And a lot of others here I know are footing the biggest part of the bill out of their own pockets. I think it's time we get an account on KickStarter too!!!

Though I think if everybody just started posting to fund their venture to BRC KickStart would actually be spoiled for funding real art projects.

Hi FIVE JK and MK! We go to give. Our camp is our gift. The smiles, the ROTFLMAO times had all make it so very worth spending the rest of the year preparing for the next! We ask very little from our fellow campers yet they give so very much to enrich everyone's experience. Is that not what it is supposed to be? Or as I stated above, "Wow! I think I really fucked up!"

well theme camps do fundraisers off the internet, why not do them on the internet and target the people on the internet most interested in Burning Man.
Kickstarter is just another tool to raise funds, just like having a fund raising party. its everyone on the internet is invited.

if you have a truck is it wrong to use it to move, just because other people dont? they probably just havent caught on.

I dont understand why it would be soo wrong for a theme camp to use kickstarter and to move the cost of everything off the few people people in a camp. I mean every little bit helps.

maybe you guys shouldnt be so concern with your gifts to the playa and be more concerned about gifts to the Burning Man community. I guess if your so against giving to help others give, thats fine, but you seem like your more concerned about dissuading others which may be interested and willing to give

the reward is giving, not saying you gave...

That's a very interesting looking service. Any follow up done on how often projects meet their funding goals, which projects met their goals and which didn't? I'm sure that I'm years away from being able to come up with anything worthy of being funded, at the very least, but getting some idea of what to shoot for might be helpful. How ready does one have to be before one is ready? How good is good enough?

Also ... I assume that everybody has heard of Ustream. One would have to be careful about using this service, because the Ustream TOS doesn't allow nudity, but if one pans away from anything that one isn't allowed to show - and maybe one's fellow participants wouldn't want to show to the general, non-burner public - maybe the use of Ustream could add to the appeal of one's proposal. Get away from the idea of saying "please give us money because of this thing we'd have fun doing", and move more toward the idea of the project being something that a broader audience, including the sponsors, could share in, at least to a degree.

There is a Burning Man channel on Ustream which I have watched, which some of us talked about in this discussion on ePlaya. so I know that live coverage from the Playa is possible. If the camerawork seems like too much trouble, though, maybe a pledge to do ample video and still photographic coverage of one's project, and upload it after the event as part of one's project would add to the appeal for a sponsor?
