A virgin with questions on theme camps

Post by germainbarbie » Fri Mar 04, 2011 8:55 pm

Okay, so my brother and I will be attending this year, but are completely confused about theme camps. Please dont give me these faces:   :? & be patient with me

so do we need to join a theme camp for a really good time? I ask this because we are camping veterans (and very outgoing friendly people), but do you still get the social experience of being without a camp? We dont have any idea what to expect.

What are some of your experiences with camp vs. no camp?

Thanks,
-A very excited 1st timer

Hi germainbarbie and welcome to eplaya! You have experience camping with absolute independence from anyone or anything? If so, go on your own and do not expect anything. Allow the event to guide your way.

To further answer your query:
1. You do not need to join a theme camp to have a good time. Some camps can BE a good time, but if you join them, your are obliged to help, donate or both to the activities of that camp.

2. The social experience is entirely your oyster. Your willingness to participate is directly proportional to the quality of your fulfillment.

3. Theme camps offer some things you cannot provide yourself. Probably the most profound would be someone watching your stuff while you explore the playa. Another might be an infrastructure which may or may not include; shade, wind break, shower, shared meals, location and opportunities to spend quality time with certain individuals.

4. Camping individually somewhat limits you to what is available when you arrive. The later you arrive, the more likely you will be toward the outermost parts of the city. It may be quieter, it may be dustier, it may be windier, it may be next to bad neighbors. The latter is kind of a crap shoot anyway you go.

You'll be fine if you go solo (or as a duo). The entire city is a social experience so you don't need to rely on a camp to provide that. You'll make friends with your neighbors in no time. :)

Take the 14 to the 395,,, DO NOT go over the Sierras from Sacramento on I-80! If you take highway 6 from Bishop over to highway 95, then the 50 to I-80 you will avoid the major grades from Bishop to Reno. Unless you want to go through Reno, there is no need to negotiate the Sierras.

Yeah they do that so you go through every little town along the way and spend more money with their sponsors! The distances are very close to the same with much less congestion and great scenery,,,, not to mention a gentler topography to negotiate. Besides,,,, if you draw a straight line from L.A. to Gerlach, it goes almost directly through Bishop.

The fact is unless you camp in the walk up camping or on the last streets not off a main radial (3,6,9,ext). Your going to be camping next to someone.
Outside of sleeping, eating, drinking, relaxing, and fornicating.. your not going to be at your camp.

A theme camp is just going to hamper you down. If you want to camp with a group of people, then look for that.
I have a little bit of Savannah with me. Shhh...

There's a crapload of RV's there. If I had one I'd definitely bring it. It'll get really dusty though. There's some decent grades on the 395 too. I don't know if it's any worse/better than going up the 5. I know my first year I drove back on the 5 and it was a breeze. The 395 can get oooold if you're worn out and on your way back home.

Hey! If you own one, use it! The anti RV crap is a bunch of hooey. They are a pain to clean the dust out of if you rent one. But if you own one,,, nobody will honestly "frown upon you".

Just know that your waste water is a concern you have to be very conscious about as most holding tanks get pretty stinky and fill up under normal use. There are porta potties,,,, and plan on keeping showers to a minimum,,, or just use a solar bag out in front of everybody,,,, it's more fun that way! But you still have to catch the grey water and either evaporate it or haul it out in buckets.

I will in general.. (although before last year I didn't care about normal RVs, we just happen to be at war right now)
But more so if it's a mega-rv and the people in it all have segways and gate off the area around the mega-rv. I bring eggs just to toss at mega-rv's hauling smaller, but considerably larger then your family Winne.

The major grades are north of Mono Lake,,, that is why you go east on the 6 from Bishop and catch the 95 and 50 into Fernley,,,, much more mellow,,, and actually make better time with a heavy rig. Besides,,,, Hawthorne is such a trippy place! Twilight zone,,,,,,
