construction question about vertical camp

Post by silad » Sun Mar 06, 2011 2:39 pm

Hello there, I was hoping someone can let me know wat materials are out there to build a multi level structure with scaffolding similar to what is done by the vertical camp shown here in this video:

I saw this camp last year near but I never got a chance to ask what materials they had used & now I can't find their contact info. I am the organizer for where's dr dre??? camp and after seeing vertical camp last year, I made a vow to create a similar structure for my own camp in 2011. If anyone has clues I would really appreciate it!!!

Thanks!!!!!

I can't see the joints that well, but, Kee-Klamps are used to build structures like that.

These are what we use. But for weight bearing structures, YMMV.

Vertical Camp invited us to watch a sunset with them from the top!
Beautiful, purple and pink haze views over the city as the sun dropped.

This might help; www (dot) TheCollectiveCA (dot) com

We were told by one of the campers the woman in charge of Camp Vertical also owns/directs the collective, a group of 30 various artists living in a building (in Berkeley?) housing them with studio spaces for each artist.

We met her also, she had a really nice big RV parked next to the structure, haha, they're all super nice. Thank you Camp Vertical!!

I just completed(successfully) an advanced fall protection training class. I helped set up and the class utilized this kind of scaffold.Image Here is some assembled scaffold. Image

It was easy to set up and all points on the scaffold except for the rosettes and diagonals can be used to hook in to for fall protection.
Use fall protection when working above 10 feet. That means a full body harness and double lanyard. That way you can hook and unhook safely to move about the scaffold.
I suggest recruiting someone familiar with the correct installation of the scaffold and possibly enlist the help of a structural engineer so that you don't under or over build what you want to the extreme.

Now have at it.

Best little tidbit of wisdom I have heard in a long time on this board.
Too bad may out there don't follow this path.
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

You can rent that scaffolding many places in SF Reno etc. Understand wind loading and make it much fatter than tall or engineer it because you are talking weight which if it flies will destroy when it lands.

Thanks OED! :)

Scaffold can be rented in any major metropolitan area at what I consider to be very inexpensive prices. My last time renting traditional scaffold was 9 years ago...

Ring Lock is a term I see allot of for this scaffold and I presume that is the common name. After looking at the Layher USA site I am sure it is the brand of scaffold I set up. It was very easy. Everything went together with a light hammer and 2 wrenches.

this makes the engineer in me a bit nervious, as did vertical camp, but no one died so guess proof is in the pudding.

Luck has it there is a structural engineer in our camp !!! I know she would not be able to rest easy unless our structure was 100% sound

I remember the "scaffolding of doom" in 1999. Had a sign posted, reading "find the missing part, and we may let you play on it"
