Yeah, that's the one. And I laughed at his appearance in graidawg's post. But I wondered if everyone understood it. And I just don't think history is well-taught in american schools.
I wasn't interested in the answer, per se, and someone had to blurt out the answer. Of course, who knows how many people would have googled it...

I think there's plenty of variance in skin-thickness among Burners, but not all the thin-skinned ones are going to admit to oversensitivity, and not all the thick-skinned ones are going to admit to cluelessness.

I don't blame you. I'm probably out of the loop, but I never heard anyone saying that precise arrangement of words before ePlaya
I hear it in our village constantly, but not a lot elsewhere in BRC. I don't think it's a super common thing... yet.

Maybe we'll put it in playa lingo this year & see if we can make it catch on more.

I knew who he was, even in high school, but funny thing is I skipped all but US history and all Literature classes (feud with a couple of Teachers that I won). I ended up having to take every single optional other class to qualify for enough credits (Debate, Forensics, Journalism, Bible as Literature, Word Power, Civics, etc) I was always a natural History buff, still am. I have since gone back and read some of the "classics" I "missed out on"....

My teaching certificate has me down as a history major, although I never did get my own classroom. The tough part is covering all the eras, making it interesting and imparting the lessons learned, the precedents for today, while not losing the wonderfully interesting stories. It is nearly impossible, and the standardized tests narrow the teaching opportunities down to next to nothing.

Being raised Navy, we moved and traveled a lot. My parents made sure I knew where we were, the history, took me to museums, exposed me to as much art and culture as possible, let me play with maps. Everywhere fascinated me. We went to Wlliamsburg repeatedly when dad was stationed in Norfolk. One year I didn't go to school, we went to Japan and Europe. My freshman year was spent in Iran, I took Persian history. Even as a teenager, I loved the silent places full of time in Persepolis.

The overall effect was that I was bored to tears with high school, and my credits were messed up. I dropped out and took the GED, went to college instead of finishing high school. Somewhere over the years, I finished my psych degree, and later turned it into a teaching certificate. Had to re-major to do it, so now I have a nice piece of parchment claiming I know a lot about history, anthropology, geography, and of course, psychology. Ha.

I love history, I do not love how it is compressed into history lessons.

I can't memorize dates worth a damn, that's what reference materials are for.

It seems history is rarely taught with much continuity. Truly historic events that change the direction of a society, a war, a revolution are not put into context of actions/decisions and the intended/unintended consequences. To me, those are the true lessons of history.

For instance: Why were the 1920's "roaring"? Why did the "Great Depression last so long in U.S. and only considered 'a' depression in the rest of the world?

Things like that which have an affect on our generation rarely seem to be truly scrutinized with the application of hindsight and critical thinking.

Naturally, educators are taught about higher order learning rather than rote memorization, and all the good ones implement it in their lesson plans. Learning is the ideal, testing is the reality. The pressure to turn out students who perform well on the standardized tests undercuts true learning; standardized tests do not measure critical thinking, much less authentic learning.

Teaching to the test is the lowest form of education, but politicians find that the simplest measurement of student ability.

I was lucky enough to grow up in a family that valued thought. Also, my father was on sabbatical for a year at Cambridge. We got a different perspective.

Trying to remember way back when I was in School, I know there were statewide standardized tests that we took in math and science because I can stlll remember some of my percentile rankings in those tests. But, I don't ever remember specifically studying for them.

If I remember correctly, it just seemed that we went about our normal classwork and then one day there would be an announcement that the tests would be next week and there would be no normal classes during specific periods that the tests were administered.

Which seems the only way to really judge the quality of the student's education. Again, this is if I'm remembering correctly.

We had standardized tests in my school years, too. But not as much rode on them. Pretty much the same deal as you remember, but I don't think funding was tied to it.

I personally learnt far more history when i was doing reenactment than when i was at school, not really test stuff but general information, proabably because i was interested and didnt want to look to stoopid when people asked me questions (plus i used to make up really good lies to fill in the blanks)

Anyway i hate the romans

The romans probably deserve it. Plus they brought the scourge of catholicism to europe. I have a soft spot, but they took me to ruins (Bath and Hadrian's Wall) when I was eight and nine, and they were too impressive for me not to look kindly on them.
