From Melburn to the Big Burn

Post by pirotechnics » Tue Mar 01, 2011 11:06 pm

Hi Burners and Burners to be.

Piro from Melburn (Melbourne) Australia here. I'm heading over for my 1st burning man and I'm so excited to enter my rite of passage into the burner world.

Many of my friends have been and one mate even DJ'd at last years. I'm hoping to DJ this year if possible but mostly just looking forward to contributing as much as I can and being a part of the whole experience.

I'm heavly involved in many areas of the victorian festival sceen, such as DJing, Event managment, Fire performing, Decor, Body painting plus I also run my own events company "Pirotechnics". If anyone could point me in the right direction for getting involved I would be very greatful. I would also love to join a cool theme camp but I've had very mixed reviews about some of the camps so would also be greatful for any joining a camp advice.

Ultimatly I'm just looking forward to that overwhelming feeling of excitment you get when you enter a magical festival for the 1st time. This year I took a group of european and canadian friends to their first Tribeadelic and Rainbow Serpent Festivals. For me I just had the feeling of "its good to be home" when I got there but my friends were jumping out of their skins with excitment. I'm looking forward to recapturing that feeling at burning man and embracing the unknown.

Peace, Love & Fire :)

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Oh, you'll get that feeling. There are very few guarantees at the event, and expectations are ill-advised, but it's fairly safe to say you will have the "I'm not in Kansas anymore" feeling for sure. What else you will experience is impossible to predict.

If people give you @#$% about wanting to DJ, don't take it personally. It's a crazy-popular question (and a lot of people expect to be taken up on it immediately), and though ePlayans try to stay polite for the first page of replies and start snarking on the second page, there is special vitriol reserved for this topic because of the many newbies who have been overbearing about it (yourself not yet included). I am not qualified to give advice on landing a DJ gig except to reiterate--don't take it personally if you get a little static at first, and investigate politely. I would start with a small to medium camp, myself--but maybe I think small.

To conclude: yaaaay, more Australians!

Down in art and performances, there is a thread for artists looking for stages. No guarantees there, but a good way to say hi as a performer.

Fire performances are all over the playa, both spontaneous and arranged. Burn Night is huge, but the process to get into one of the conclaves and get a laminate, very strict. In fact, they've already begun coordinating the process. Do bring your fire toys if you can, you can spin as long as you have fuel, the playa is wide open.

Keep an eye on the main site for theme camps and the calendar of events, there are several camps which do body painting. I'd imagine some would welcome talented help.

Welcome.

Hey All,

Thanks for the warm welcome and advice. :)

Its such a wierd feeling, I feel like I'm heading home to a place I've never been befor. It makes both no sense and perfect sense at the same, talk about an oxymoron.

Its looking like Burning Man will be the stat of an epic adventure and a passage into the next level. In Aug I'm planing to quit my job and move out of my home, put all my things in storage and travel the world for who knows how long. I cant think of a better way to start the adventure then with a "rite of passage", seems like all signs point to yes.

Steer clear of the Naked Greeters...try to come in thru the back entrance...I mean the back gate...I mean...nevermind.
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

That's amazing.

Now I particularly hope that I will either run into you, or that you report back as to what kind of rite you will have had.
