Well I guess you could say it's an event for your mouth....insert snark here... they are very yummy.
I think it's a nice personal touch from burners to burners

It's doesn't reallly matter how you camp as long as your prepared and have a open mind. This will be mine and figments 3rd burn and we're trying it all on for size. 1st we were was just another couple. 2nd was Staggers and this year will full on theme camp Barbie death camp. C works gate and last year some lady wouldn't turn her RV off while he was searching a van directly in front of her. She let off the break and trapped c in between the van and the RV. This was at gate open. So...perhaps C has a right to hate on RV's.

In addition, across the street from us was a group of yahoo's who brought 10 or 12 tour buses, parked them in a totally enclosed square, used segways, and didn't really interact with other people. So...they were kind of douchy. And didn't really want to chat or hang out or anything when we tried to interact. So...there's that.

I don't mind RV's in general. But there are some people who bring RV's and use it as an excuse to be a spectator.

I'm with jella on this. We brought our already-owned pop up trailer and it was great. Not too difficult to clean out either as we have less upholstery than a regular RV (really only the mattress which I pre-bagged in a plastic mattress bag). The trailer served as our sanctuary from dust storms and over-stimulation. And if you're a night-time peer like myself you can't beat the convenience, and comfort of having your own potty. We did have to haul out our black water but I set up a good system for that and it was no big deal.

I still wonder why we only received one fireball with two tickets this year. We received two last year,,,, almost made me ask for a refund,,,, almost

Well that's kinda like assuming everyone who drives a white car is an idiot,,, to purpose assault on someone's vehicle of like kind simply because of bad experiences with PEOPLE who happen to travel in that kind of vehicle is ridiculous.

I'm a little nervous reading stories of cows and rabbits in the road and swerving off a cliff

is it like driving up a mountain when finally arriving to burning man?

It is a lonely, open range road. It is at altitude, but there aren't any really steep grades. If you're a bit nervous about that, I would suggest arriving in Reno on Sunday night, checking into a hotel, having a nice meal, sleeping, and leaving at dawn on Monday morning. It will likely have a better line and you'll have daylight on your side.

If you've ever driven the Pear Blossom Highway from Palmdale to Victorville, it is something like that road in width. The terrain is rolling hills from I-80 to Gerlach on highway 447. Not what I would call mountainous,,,, nothing like Angeles Crest or going up to Arrowhead from L.A.

When the gates open, there will literally be Thousands waiting to get in the gate. From the pavement to Black Rock City will take you half the day. And if like last year, the gate was closed during a dust storm and rain storm. Some of our camp mates spent over 10 hours in line.

We have early entry passes, so I've already told you more than I know first-hand. I'm sure others can advise you better than I can. I just like touching base with you.

im probably going to be arriving during the daytime, just because its my first time in the reno area

and yeah, ive driven from here to lake arrowhead many of times, so im glad its not mountainous

oh! and do people have hippie names? i was reading people go over there and like to be called "rainbow dawn" and stuff like that, i think thats kind of cool

A cinnamon flavored jaw breaker. They stick them in the package with the tickets so that they can be mailed as packages, rather than letters, so it's cheaper.

"Duck" is right. Around here "hippie" means "loser who mooches off the capable and prepared." In a community that does give a lot to its members, there will be a very bad attitude to those who deliberately take advantage.

We do have "playa names" which some may not find distinguishable from "hippie names."

You are asking all the right questions. Once you leave Reno it is rolling hills at best, pretty flat really. I have never seen a cow on 447 but I have seen them on the side. The rabbits are suicide rabbits, do not swerve or change course. If they make it they make it, if they don't they don't, the important thing is that YOU make it. Probably best to leave Reno in the early morning for your first arrival.

Playa Names - I have had a few during my 10 years (tenures?) hahaha. Some had to do with my character for that year. In 2003 (Beyond Belief) I was Glennesh (a cousin of Ganessh), I've been Captain Skirt, three years ago we happened upon Galaxo Magic, that one has stuck now.....

If you are in a smaller car, hitting the rabbits is disconcerting, I was sitting in the back seat and could feel it thump thump thump under the car. Sad, but you truly can't swerve away from them.

Thumper isn't a fun name anymore....

I usually leave LA around 5-6am and get to Gerlach late afternoon. It usually takes forever to get in the gate though so it's dark by the time I'm looking for my camp. Make sure you're familiar with the city layout if you're trying to find something in the dark.

I would like to throw one thought into the mix -
Check out the volunteer opportunities on the BM site. If something strikes your fancy, look into it and ask about it. I did a patch of volunteering my first year and I feel, at least in my case, it enhanced the experience. I worked primarily with DPW, but also did a few shifts at BMIR and also managed to sleaze my way into helping DG in Thunderdome for a few nights. It was a blast and I still had huge amounts of time to do everything else.

Just a suggestion.

Most important of all - HAVE FUN!

Like what,can you tell us some examples?

Head to playa info to see if anyone needs help and has posted for it, sign up for a shift with greeters when it strikes your fancy, do lamplighters, work an exodus shift with Perimeter, Gate, and Exodus, or simply help someone out when they need it!!!

There's a volunteer booth or something in Center Camp. Just show up and see what people are asking for--sort of like being a Mexican ditch-digger on the street corner.
