Get some Imaginative/Creative ideas for African project
Hey Guys-
I'm currently living in South Africa running an Education organization, Imagine Scholar. We focus on building imagination, creativity, and critical thinking skills for rural high school students. Pretty cool stuff.
I planned my trip back to the US this year to overlap with the Burn, and I thought it would be awesome while there to connect with fellow burners for ideas, and spread the word about our project and its very Burning Man-esque mission. So I'm humbly asking you guys if you have any advice or ideas on how to talk about our very cool project in a creative fun way.
Alos pre-burn if anyone has any cool ideas for drug free mind expanding classes those would also be very welcome. The kids we work with don't have much chance in school to think outside the box, as their curriculum consists almost entirely of rote learning. Â Our goal is to bridge that gap and challenge the students to think in ways (analytically, imaginatively, abstractly) that they haven't had a chance to before.
It can be anything: a book, short story, poem, board game, logic game, funny story, computer software, relevant organization to share with, and on and on. Our kids are 14-17 years old and eager to ponder big ideas, use their imagination, and empower their futures.  So think back to what intellectually inspired you at that very pivotal age!
Thanks so much for your help,
Corey

I have used my art car for just the purpose you are looking for. I have visited schools with students kindergarden through college and the mission is to inspire creative thinking. Letting the students know that things that are going on in their heads can be transformed into outrageous reality. The big message is that they are the creators of the future.
Here is a link from the BM photos that may help you out.
Good luck!

In another thread, we were discussing history and how it got lost in the rote learning process. To visit historical subjects again with a critical eye toward decisions which effect lives and society for good or bad. To tell the story in a manner which, whether good or ill, decisions which turned the course and the students now face the consequences of those decisions are discussed with discernment.
To me, that is what is missing from modern history lessons.

Isn't this supposed to be a thread about helping someone with creative ideas for some students in Africa? I'll make a thread for people to snark at others instead of ruining a great thread.
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Serious threads should be treated as such.

Roscoe, let me expand on my suggestion above about an art car. Depending on the number of schools and students involved, you could make one or more of these cars. Older cars can be purchased pretty inexpensively. This book can be a guide for you and the students can create a masterpiece.

...and you can use this art car movie as further motivation. Many of these vehicles have been to Burning Man at some point in their lives!

my daughter was in a "space day" program in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade that intrigued her and motivated her to study the sciences.
her all girl team won a trip to d.c. Katelyn still corresponds with one of the astronauts she met there.
so something along the lines of

That sounds great tamarakay! I wish they had something like that when I was a kid! When my nephew was in 3rd or 4th grade, his class did a project taken from the book Flat Stanley. All the kids made an outline of themselves, colored them in to look like themselves and sent it to a family or friend somewhere in the states/world and they would take picture of the "flat" kid at local sites or historic places, etc. and send them photos every 2 weeks. My nephew sent me his!tamarakay wrote:my daughter was in a "space day" program in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade that intrigued her and motivated her to study the sciences.

My nephew's class would look at them and talk about each picture. I wrote on a label and put it on the back of the photo where "Flat Anthony was". Plus sent them some candy with the area's favorite berry, the huckleberry!
