Japan is incredibly cautious with their power plants. No radiation leaks, but the cooling system at one plant is damaged. No word on what type of back-up they have in place, but knowing the Japanese approach to safety, they probably have it well under control. Probably. Fuck ...

Fuck, just crazy in Tokyo, they shut the elevated highways, and the trains are not running.

.
SO I'm watching the news report from the Or. beach.. The reporter and camera are way up out of the way.. Looking down at the beach.. The Ocean draws back about 100 yards.. Then a 6ft sneaker wave pours in. It covered the 100 yards in seconds and crashes into a sea wall.. The water rushes out to sea faster than it came in.. Inside of 60 seconds a couple appear over the sea wall for a walk on the open sand.. Other places along the Or. beach. People have come from inland to walk on the beach with there kids and dogs to see the big wave..

This surely comes under FUCKWAD.

Misa big ((( ))) to your brother. Heartbreak can be so hard especially on younger people. It can sound trivial to some but it is real. I read something about break up depression and how it can really affect people. I know this because my daughter has recently gone through the same thing...best remedy is time and that sometimes feels like it takes to long.

Even if it doesn't seem like you can help him right now, just being there for him when he is ready will be a great help.

Fuck, been thinking about Japan all day. Makes me want to grab my tool belt and bags and head out. I know that's not what they need at the fucking moment, but I still want to.

Misa, lucky420 is right. Just being around will help your brother. He'll need space to figure it out for himself, but just knowing that family is near is a big help. And as minor as it may seem to those of us who have "been there, done that", to your brother its subjectively pretty fucking hard, I'd think.

The pictures you see of everything rolling over a flat area, is reclaimed land.
The sea had been pushed back, the land desaleiled and farmed.. About 10-12 km X 50km @ sea level.. Thats a lot of food.. Once again the human is not the master..

someone told me once, just because other people have bigger problems than you, yours are no less important. I know how distressing a break up can be, if it has been a 6 month or 6 year thing its still horrible and worse to watch because you can't do anything really, just be there.

Ok...let me fucking understand this. A hydrogen explosion that blows up 2 different reactor buildings (the second one just blew not that long ago), is supposed to not have any effect on the reactor? And pumping sea water on a reactor core is not going to hurt it either?

Then I read that a US Navy Carrier Battle Group is saying they found themselves in a cloud of radiation and their sailors got a month's worth of radiation in an hour's time?

At this point I'm thinking someone's trying to cover their ass and the public is going to get fucked. I read online that even the Russians are calling bullshit and are saying the reactors are seriously fucking compromised...

Bottom line for my post is this shit scares the fucking hell out of me...if a carrier is picking up radiation and air monitors in Nevada have picked up lead from Chinese factories that floated all the way across the Pacific...what's to keep the Japanese radiation from making that same trip?

In other words should I be buying iodine for my family or should I believe the Japanese govt that says exploding nuclear facilities is no cause for alarm?

Yes, but those are outer containment buildings. They're supposed to blow outwards so they don't damage the nuclear containment vessel inside which houses the reactor core. The outer containment buildings are not made to withstand high pressures, and when hydrogen built up in there, and eventually came in contact with air, it exploded. The reactors are probably designed to vent the hydrogen into that outer building to prevent a build-up in the inner containment building that houses the reactor.

The Japanese are using sea water because they can't directly power the pumps that would normally cool the reactor, from all the flooding. So they're directly pumping in water and using sea water for that purpose. The sea water is only bad for the reactor itself as it will contaminate the reactor cooling system and probably mean the reactor is a total loss after this is over. Still, it's a good way to cool down the reactor in lieu of other options. It's not like they're hosing down the reactor from above.

In the Three Mile Island accident there was a full-on meltdown, as well as a hydrogen explosion in the containment vessel. The vessel held up, and virtually no radiation leaked to the environment. Some of the reactors at that plant are still providing power. It'll probably be the same for these reactors as well.
Then I read that a US Navy Carrier Battle Group is saying they found themselves in a cloud of radiation and their sailors got a month's worth of radiation in an hour's time?
Sure, but that's background radiation levels, which are very low to begin with. When I read the radiation level comparison on the news, the point they were trying to make was that it was as low as a month of background radiation. It's probably comparable to the radiation you get on an airline flight--something you don't want to maintain exposure to for very extended periods, but not really all that dangerous.
At this point I'm thinking someone's trying to cover their ass and the public is going to get fucked. I read online that even the Russians are calling bullshit and are saying the reactors are seriously fucking compromised...
Yeah, but the Russians will call bullshit on anything that serves their interests. The important thing right now is to not serve up too much disinformation and sensationalism for what will probably blow over in a day or two (not literally).
Bottom line for my post is this shit scares the fucking hell out of me...if a carrier is picking up radiation and air monitors in Nevada have picked up lead from Chinese factories that floated all the way across the Pacific...what's to keep the Japanese radiation from making that same trip?

You'll probably receive more radiation from the nukes they detonated in the 1960s or regional coal power plants than whatever may make its way across the Pacific Ocean. Whatever you choose, I'd do some more reading to make a more informed decision. Sometimes the stress of paranoia is more harmful than the actual threat.
