diy artists
thought i would throw this back out there - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beautiful_Losers_(film)
met twister once (barry mcgee) when he was hanging his work in the people's cafe on haight because i recognized his work popping up throughout south san francisco. was surprised to hear about the documentary when it first showed at sxsw, which is why i was reminded of it.
pretty good observations on some of the people, thier attitudes, and general beliefs of bay area artists... that scene, and its various inter-related groups used to be a huge artist resource back in the early days of bman. these were people i loved to target, tell them about whats going on out there in the desert. the documentary does a decent job of showing that strong, originating diy artist spirit.
part of me regrets doing things like that because even though it drove a huge part of what went on, kinda gave the org an attitude over it, like it was their doing somehow. ive heard staff members point out various things throughout san francisco and elswhere saying "hey thats burningman! we made all that happen!"
no joke, even heard a senior staff member take credit for bman establishing maker faire. the second handers... guess there are quite a few now. but its hard to discern between those and people who just havent had much exposure, those who are looking to start out themselves and make all those connections and dive right in. guess in that way.. bman is a gateway to much of it.

I've always distrusted anyone calling themselves an 'artist' in their own lifetimes.

except for the man, you dont touch da man or we put you in prison. dont even look at him wrong, just quietly sit there and pray until we say you can get up and leave. if you prove to be a good little disciple you can have one of our little totems to wear around your neck, and we will consider your application to work the man crew once you've purged yourself of all thats not burningman.
