Read the survival guide and the first timer's guide. Poke around on burningman.com to find them.
What sort of experience do you want? (Introverted or extroverted? Day or night?)
How much energy and focus are you going to have in the heat with a city full of distractions? (This will tie in directly with volenteering and working with a theme camp--which usually means sweat equity should be produced.)
If you want to meet people, read up in the "Open Discussion" forum (that's where much of hte socialization on this board occurs.)
If you want to know how to set up camp, try Q & A, Tips and Tricks.
If you're looking for a theme camp, start with the Theme Camps 2011 and then spend some time figuring out what and how much can you give to a bunch of people you don't know yet who are far more interested in having your help than in providing you with a base where someone else takes care of you.

Sounds about right. I'm starting to think I should start with a group of friends for my first burn. To be able to go everywhere at any point in the day and experience it all for myself! I'm only 19 but this seems like an experience that will make for amazing memories and adventure! The art and music aspect is just beautiful.
Hey Brownbearhook! Welcome.
If you want to "go anywhere at any point in the day", don't go with a theme camp, especially since you have camping experience and presumably have some ability to set up your own tent, stake a shade structure properly, etc. Theme camps tend to require either money or a time commitment, and they are not required. If you want, you can simply do what you're already doing as far as networking with other people from Santa Clarita and perhaps decide to be neighbors, or camp with an orphan camp or similar.
Even if you didn't meet or chat with people beforehand, you will have neighbors almost any place in the city, and you will probably make friends quickly; whether it be because you give a helping hand or invite people into your shade for a beer.

Your a young noob! Dont go with an attitude, and listen to what your neighbors have to say! And don't be afraid to ask questions! Going on your own, or with your own group, is a good way to start! Make up your own theme camp name. AND! go with NO expectations!brownbearhook wrote:Sounds about right. I'm starting to think I should start with a group of friends for my first burn.
