Japan 8.9 earthquake and Tsunami

Post by wedeliver » Mon Mar 14, 2011 10:53 am

All I can say is bummer! I am sure we all feel very bad for the people who are suffering. 8.9 lasting 5 minutes, then 15 minutes later the water came. The weather is freezing to compound the problem.

Is the word Tsunami a Japanese word? I understand they have had many Tsunami's. I saw this drawing and thought it looked like some of the pictures we have seen.

Yes, it is my understanding that "tsunami" is a Japanese word. There has been concerted effort to replace the native english, but inaccurate term "tidal wave" with it since my childhood.

Seems to me that the word "Tsunami" is ingrained in all of us since 2004, regardless of our language.

"Harbor wave" just doesn't seem to conjure up the power....

That volcano is down south on Kyushu, the whole complex has been active this winter. Shinmoe-dake has erupted already earlier this year, "predicting worse to come." No shit.

(can't find the page where I lifted that quote, sorry)
But go look at the lightning coming out of the volcano... ooooh.

As we speak 3 nuclear reactors are believed to be going into meltdown and the possibility of a catastrophic chain reaction has begun to make it's way into news reports.

This is the most horrific thing I have ever witnessed in my lifetime. At this rate in 20 years we will speak of the last days of the Japanese and the horrific end of their civilization the same way we speak of Pompei.

And it happened so fast. Just four days ago their lives were normal. They went to work that morning, sent their kids to school, kissed their loved ones goodbye and then their world was destroyed.

That is the real horror is that it only took minutes for them to be brought to their knees, and a few days later they are nearing a point of having a death blow from the worst nuclear accident in history. Japan is about the same size as California, thinner West to East in most parts, but about the same distance from north to south.

The volcano itself is on the southern island and does not appear to be in a highly populated area.

This has made me more aware that my house is in a town built directly over a fault, in a river valley that is nearly at sea level, almost equidistant from a dam on one end and the ocean on the other, AND about 100 miles from a nuclear reactor! (I keep iodine caps in my freezer just in case).

Ok, here is one of the weirdest videos I've seen yet. It is of a guy standing in a park video taping during the earthquake as cracks open into the ground, and water begins to come out like a spring.

Although the devastation is awful, I'm sure it doesn't cover the whole country. And besides, even if we could evacuate in any sort of expeditious manner, where would we put them? It's not like there's much free real estate in the world. Beyond that there is the truth that there are dangers everywhere. And the truth is that volcanic soils are rich in nutrients. Let's get the population down everywhere in the world (and, no, I'm not suggesting that letting everyone in the quake zone die is a way to do that) and do our best to site residential areas and to build infrastructure in appropriate ways.

It sometimes seems as if the entire country is sliding into the ocean or something. It's bad, but not that bad.

For instance, Tokyo is mostly business as usual.

Mostly. The top of the Tokyo Tower is bent.

yes tsunami is romaji

Post by Tiahaar » Mon Mar 14, 2011 9:23 pm

for those who are wondering...from the wiki:

'The term tsunami comes from the Japanese 津波, composed of the two Han characters 津 (tsu) meaning "harbor" and 波 (nami), meaning "wave".'

The south coast here faces a threat of such a wave from an underwater slide zone near the Channel Islands. According to UCSB geologists an active fault there could collapse the slide and send a large tsunami wave directly towards Santa Barbara/Goleta, with very little time to get out of the way. Yeeps!

Wow, 9.0 earthquake, I'm from The Magic Kingdom and Los Angeles, and thats sounds like the biggest E ticket ride ever made. I wonder if Burners without boarders are providing aid? I wonder what I could do to help?

As I learn about this stuff I found this Wiki quote about the Cascadia subduction zone. (thats northern Cal up to Vancover BC) Says the Tsunami's have been 100' and I wonder does that that mean 100 feet up and 100 feet down? WOW

"Recent findings concluded the Cascadia subduction zone was more hazardous than previously suggested. The feared next major earthquake has some geologists predicting a 10 to 14% probability that the Cascadia Subduction Zone will produce an event of magnitude 9 or higher in the next 50 years,[9] although the most recent studies suggest that this risk could be as high as 37%.[10][11] Geologists have also determined the Pacific Northwest is not prepared for such a colossal earthquake. The tsunami produced may reach heights of approximately 30 meters (100 ft)."

The Japanese are our friends now! Keep that in mind, when we killed tens of thousands of them with just two bombs. Im not supporting or arguing that, but they were able to rebuild, better than before! My hopes and prayers go out to the nation of Japan, but I have confidence they will be back.

Well, I was gonna say.... At least the Japanese Whalers who were out in the
oceans illegally hunting and killing whales were spared from the earthquake
and tsunami, but it seems the Japanese decided last month to cease their
whale hunting.

This really is a horrible tragedy for the Japanese, but a victory for the whales.

We helped them write their new constitution, and in many cases, we were helping them rebuild almost immediately after the war. Admiral Decker had the silver which was hidden underwater in Yokosuka Bay, he returned it all so the city could be rebuilt, rather than keep it as spoils of war for the US.

Weird moment: my parents were visiting me, and my house owner had a family dinner for us. My father and her father sat and talked about the war, how they'd both been into photography, and the places they had been at the same time. The Same Time. As enemies, but they were now sitting together over beer.
I have no doubt Japan will bounce back. But I still ache for the families who have been destroyed.

The Pacific coast got a pretty good tsunami after the Good Friday earthquake;
I don't post things because I believe that they are the absolute truth. I post them because I believe that they should be considered.

As often as this story has played out, and been told, it still brings a small tear, for the thought of humanity, and, how, with just a small spark, we can be enemies, or friends. And the wonder, why so often the enemy part wins.
Poignant, for sure.

Hate to be a negative Nancy, but you don't know that. Many ships were in the harbors and were wrecked. Plus you don't know how many kin they might have lost.

In the news, 6.0 earthquake in Shizuoka, home to Mt. Fuji. which hasn't erupted in hundreds of years.
