Hi Iamtonynyc, that is a good twist on the question. For perspective I'd wanted to do BurningMan ever since I started picking up bits and pieces of news from odd places like Rolling Stone, People (magazines in my dentist's office for instance), MTV clips, etc. 10 years or so ago about the time I moved to S Cal from Idaho. It was a Holy Grail Fantasy that really started to bloom once I got internet savvy a few years ago (I was a slow starter), then last year some things happened and I just decided "I'm going...who wants to come along?" Blew me away too, and now can hardly wait to be there again.

So...she should not go to BurningMan until she has heard about BurningMan and wants to go. Wants to camp in the heat/dust/surreal landscape of a desert arts city, wants to meet and interact with the other participants and see what they've created and experienced. I'm just a newbie with little eplaya standing but I for one love that most people out there want, at some level, to be there and go to great lengths (sometimes mindbending lengths!) to get themselves and their stuff out there and that is a huge part of the magic in it for me.

I would suggest against taking somebody with you who you don't know very well. The chances are too great that she'll fuck up your experience with drama or that you'll fuck up hers. Or that you'll simply end up not hitting it off and either be stuck with each other for a week, or one of you will hook up with somebody else and the other will get jealous, etc. etc. etc.

So, my answer to the question is that she should not go because the two of you will end up hating each other.

Might I also suggest you read this, if you haven't already:

Yo iamtonynyc, ignore those guys! Take a chance, step out, do something radical. After all, what's the worse that could happen?

By the way, what part of NYC are you from? I used to live in Queens Vllg.

Nobody in their right mind would spend all that money for the privilege of camping out in the high desert at the hottest time of the year with 30,000 freaks running around burning shit.

Luckily I'm not in my right mind. This woman you met (assuming it really is a woman!) sounds a little too rational to fully appreciate Burning Man.

Tony, perhaps you will get more accurate feedback if you let us know how much she knows about BM.
Has she scoped out the website, read the entire survival and first-timers guides? Has she a halfway realistic idea of what is involved?

AND

have you met? Do you plan to meet beforehand? If you plan to drive out together, have you discussed stuff like how often to stop for food/rest/stretching/gawking at scenery, etc? Are your musical tastes compatible?

I would not tell you not to do it, it could be great, before you decide,
think it through!

hahahahahahahahahah!!!!!

seriously, the burn will test the dynamics of a strong relationships, much less a newly formed one. it's not easy, and you can't "get away" from it once your there. -(so to speak).
the heat, and dust will easily spank a 'non-camper' into submission. it can be very BRUTAL out there, especially in alpha dust storms.
-(have you had your rebar steaks made yet?)

take all things into account, and make a wise and educated 'call' before going. yes, it's one hell of a week that you will never forget, but if your not TOTALLY prepared, mentally, and gear wise, your in for something that may be your worst nightmare.

just trying to offer up some helpful advice.

Come to think of it, I had to be talked into going. Sounded way too 50s-nudist-camp for my tastes.

Seared 3 minutes 45 seconds each side on a manzanita fired grill. Yum!

Does anybody know where I can get vegan and/or certified organic rebar? Also, has anybody tried veggebar? I hear it holds up better in the heat, but will crumble a bit as you hammer it.

I would say that if you're asking "why she should not go" then you probably don't want her to go. Either that or you didn't phrase that very well. :)

No, no, you want Monsanto Bioengineered rebar all the way. The "Round-Up" readyness means less trouble on MOOP patrol.

why not to go

Post by vic » Fri Jul 23, 2004 6:20 pm

As has been pointed out, the place is full of freaks, not to mention exhibitionists, voyeurs, visonaries, idiots, saints and belly dancers all intent on radical self-expression. It's going to cost you hundreds of dollars to travel a long distance to camp on a featureless plane where you can't buy anything and you have to pick up after yourself. And if you ask any questions in advance, you have to put up with a bunch shit from the eplaya regulars.
Take her to Vegas instead, where you always know what is going on and you can blow your money in air conditioned comfort.

Not sure about vegan rebar but I heard that Tofu Depot has a sale this weekend on dolphin free PVC.

Hope this helps.

Ah yes, the playa is alive this year with the sound of vegi Rebar

for a while I was worried that all was too serious!

Good to know Burning Man is alive and well after all these year!
