When the only tool you got is a hammer, every problem looks like a hippie.

Scott had an uncle on that boat...teardropper wrote:Though extraordinarily over played, you might not think that it was the worst if you had been in the hall in Duluth, Minnesota, where the ship sailed from, the early spring day after the November sinking where Mr. Lightfoot first sang that song. It was eerie, poignant and very, very sad. There was family in the house and a dry eye could not be found. And it was an unexpected debut. I, too, have resented its overplay, but it still chills me... I remember that storm...Mojojita wrote:"The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"

The problem with Seasons in the Sun is that the whole damn thing is senseless. I suppose the narrator is dieing but that doesn't help much.
Never Been to Me is a classic. and the way she's just following that woman around telling her how shitty her life is. That's a supermarket late at night.
Isotopia definitely has a point with Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves. Of course, Cher is often awful.
Shambala produced the most awfulness with Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen and Watching Scotty Grow being the apex of that dubious mountain.
So, sappiness and tremolo seem to be the real keys here. And sacrifice and the country or god can make my teeth grind.
Dr. Demento/Novelty Songs don't count. Doc's right, some of them are good.
And Benny Lava is a novelty song. At least for us. Plus the dancing is pretty damn good. And decent songs by crappy singers like Shatner and Wing--well, I know Mojo is collecting them too, but it's not what I get from the title.
Some of these have ended up in the Simpsons--whatever that may mean.
Elton John has a pretty bad track record. A friend nominates:

An ex-friend always hated this:

I'm sort of surprised that this hasn't been dragged out from the cellar of someone's conscienceness:

This may be disqualified under the novelty act clause, but at least there's a rogues' gallery of embarrassing acts listed before the main course. (Sorry about the mixed metaphor there, but this is a bad song thread--what do you expect?)

I'm sure there's more, but luckily I can't remember what right now.

Oh man, then I'm really going to hell for enjoying "The Lonely Shepherd" on the way to the Burn last year. I had it on my ipod--on purpose, even! Because it always makes me think of a beautiful, murderous, intent Uma Thurman driving her convertible into the sunset. Which to me, says "VACATION".
. . . We were actually two happy freaks piloting a box truck (complete with roof) but I assure you, we were VERY cool.

An Abba song that will destroy your brain with its inanity more than any other song of theirs, and that's no easy feat.

Adn I suppose you think that it's easy to be so inane outside your mother tongue...Eric wrote:An Abba song that will destroy your brain with its inanity more than any other song of theirs, and that's no easy feat.

I have a friend who's Swedish and actually has an album of theirs in Swedish- same songs, just... different. Still inane, however...theCryptofishist wrote:Adn I suppose you think that it's easy to be so inane outside your mother tongue...Eric wrote:An Abba song that will destroy your brain with its inanity more than any other song of theirs, and that's no easy feat.
