2011 Camp: SINGING

Post by rrrenata » Wed Feb 09, 2011 11:31 am

We are looking for:
-people who want to camp with us
-manpower to put this camp together
-advice, ideas
-people! :)

______________
our collective brainstorm thus far:

what do we want out of camping together?

-communal meal(s)
-people to sing with
-safe, comfortable space
-rehearsal space for playa choir
-performance space for playa choir
-communal kitchen [so that it can be totally awesome]
-communal shade structure

Camp Idea:
Singer's Sandbox Camp
Transcending notes and words to make music with voice.

Vision: A creative, constructive playground for vocal enthusiasts.

based on our current "workshop" series: http://renatamartin.com/singerssandbox.html

The idea of the camp would be to provide a place to sing at burning man! There is a lot of music going on, and there are even 2 solid singing groups: Accaplaya and the Playa Choir. I envision a shaded space and lots of throat nurturing substances (water, lemon, honey...), musical instruments (or at least things to bang on, find a pitch, make tones...?), and people there and wandering through who want to make some music and ring some chords!

At camp:
Why come to our spot?
-throat-nurturing substances (water, lemon, honey...)
-singing instruction / coaching
-space to rehearse for small ensembles
-gather to improv
-musical instruments available
-people around who want to sing! be it jamming, tagging, etc.

Physical space
-GREAT signage + very visible (day and night), tall camp marker
-shade structure
-protection from dust storms
-comfy pillows on the ground
-low lights for nighttime?
-candles?
-electrical generator?
-instruments? [guitars, little drums, voices, a violin, a digjeridoo, a mandolin, saxophone, jaw harps, rain stick, tibetan meditation bowls, pitch pipes...]
-burn barrel? [a 55gallon oil drum, that we can plasma cut designs into [wooo!] and use as a contained fire pit, and a way to burn our trash]

Events:
-Circle-singing
-Tag singing
-"piano tour" -- meet the pianos of black rock city
-Vocal lessons / technique workshop
-our ensemble's (?) concert

_______________

Less structured theme camp idea:

Ideas for contributions:
-barbershop tag singing
-singing technique instruction
-misting people with water
-providing honey and citrus to soothe playa throats
-circle singing [somewhere already communal so we don't have to organize or plan too much - center camp or the temple or etc etc]
---We have someone who is going to create space for daily CircleSong (Tuesday through Saturday); same times: morning or afternoon or evening? WHAT TIME works best? Post your thoughts here...
---same place: will try for heebee geebee healers, other suggestions?
mid-week up all night CircleSong idea at Jazz Cafe: 2-6AM, then take it to Man for sunrise.

Already have a camp, but your idea sounds great. Will look for you on the playa!

Two thoughts:

1) I would show up at a certain time if I knew what pieces you were doing. For example '11am Wednesday Sing the works of Ray Charles at the 3:00 portal"... the Music itself will bring everyone in! That's what you need to decide on. Passing out the lyric is VERY important. People will also volunteer to teach more songs, and the group will be able to master them only if a critical mass know the words.

2) What I always wanted on the Playa was a singing bar! A place or time where we all sang Drinking Songs, old Irish Gigs, dance on the tables... that sort of thing. If we had the music planned people could follow the lead. Having the lyrics would be handy. Just have 50 good drinkin' songs planned, and I'm sure people will also volunteer to lead other ones too, I guess the words are slightly less important if your snot-slingin' drunk. If you play the drinking songs over a loud speaker, people will automatically come into the camp because it sounds so fun!

In fact I'd be happy to run this thing next to our Multi-themed Historical Camp, 1776 for example, and plan a bunch of old songs that go with different eras. I know our crew would nail the old folk songs, and I'm sure it would be a cool way to bring a bunch of people in along with costumes and food. The vision in my head is like a SALOON IN A MUSICAL for the main camp. Hehe.

I'm a 3 octave baritone myself, and my third in command is the ex-singer of an ACDC cover band. We've got plenty of energy to say the least.

This is one of the best ideas I've stumbled on in quite a while, btw. What a great new dimension!

IMPORTANT:
Where you place the camp will be key.
Remember when you register to NOT be a sound camp.
It must be very clear, you want natural voices and I would claim that
there was NO amplification....
else they will STICK YOU IN THE HIGH SOUND AREA!!!! out in the far
reaches of the playa. This is just nice joyful singing
and perhaps a traveling around sort of 'caroling'.
If you're in the high sound area, no one will be able to
hear their own voices over the oomph, oomph.

Thanks for all the positive and helpful feedback!

I am at a stand-still right now. An issue that I'm running into is that:

1) I can't properly plan without knowing how many people will be camping with us / helping out (manpower) during and before BM
2) People won't 'sign up' without knowing the plan

How have you dealt with this in the past?

I love the idea of the sing-along-saloon, and would be happy to take part! I don't want to include a bar in our camp, but am interested in teaming up somehow. What makes sense to you, addison4?

Thanks for the pointer about "sound camps," too. I am not currently planning on having any kind of amplification because of the desire for natural, raw vocal music. [I don't have the means to provide it, either!] I will definitely make a note of that when I submit the plan.

People respond to leadership!

"If you build it they will come." I recommend you make a plan and let people fall in as they wish:

-Plan the basic music outline for each of the six days. Have two other people give you input, as this will add variety.
-Plan what music you will publish in the BM Program as your daily advertisement to bring people in.
-Plan the camp: you will need 1000 square feet of shade to get people to assemble. You also need premiere location. I recommend registering the camp to get this location. You will need visual **Art**, AND 24 hour playa interaction to get a premiere location during the camp location process. Our camp has visual Art (6 murals).
-Make a website. (It's not hard; look at mine... it was free and easy to do.) Have a place for them to sign up as campers, request songs, sign up as musical directors, and sign up as guest singers on the web site... The advertise the website every way you can think of!

I also recommend you conglomerate with other camps into a city. I would call it 'Singing City', 'Sing-a-long City', 'Musical City', 'Theater City', or 'Vaudeville City'. This will help other people trying to do small music/theater production camps a place to go. Also you can share resources: singers!!!, main tents/stages, water trucks, generators, shipping trucks, and other supplies.

We could register our two camps in this way. 'Camp Sing-a-long' and 'A 1776 Masquerade' both in 'Vaudeville City'. For example.

I can't tell you how many little camps want to do a performance (like the highschool performance they've done before) and can't get going. This would be a great place to help small camps with their favorite performance projects. Just think how popular 'Glee' and 'high school musical' are!

It will bring people in. What do you say? Choose a city name and Private Message me so I can register the city.

P.S. We can also institute the 'Singing Saloon'!
P.P.S. Tell me about your infrastructure and your infrastructure needs.
P.P.P.S. We've also got a orchestra level trumpeter in our camp, fyi.

Keep in mind, being registered means they will place you where they want. You may be on the esplenade, but do you want to be out at 10:00 or 2:00? Not quite sure how the placement team works, but it took Black Rock Roller Disco several years to land a spot by Center Camp. At least you will be guaranteed your requested space, however.

we did it!

well, i don't know if we've been granted official placement...but i put together a whole bunch of information and ideas into something cohesive enough to get support! wooo!

it's funny the way this happened... everyone wanted to be part of it way back when i started the conversation. then, once i started trying to put things together for our placement application, all i heard were crickets....and then minutes after submitting the placement application, serendipity abounded! a friend set up a facebook group and another friend bought a web domain, and another friend offered up all sorts of structures! [i finally just gave up on getting commitment and i just took a guess and made things up...like addison4 suggested way back :)]

thanks for your ideas and support, everyone!
