Event Perimeter Distance

I did some searches but was not able to find out what the distance is if you were to walk or bike the perimeter of the entire event. Anyone know by chance?

Also, are there ever any organized runs or bike rides around it?....(staying within boundaries of course).

it's about, IIRC, 6-7 miles around the outside.
and, yes, I see organized groups running around, and biking, when I have morning shifts.

One of the Mapsource files that was available last year shows 1.6 miles from pentagon point to point. (8 miles)

Google earth shows about 8 miles as well. 1.6 miles a leg. that was for the 2010 burn.

ygmir - Last year I noticed a few people "sunning" themselves just outside the trash fence. I was thinking of doing the same thing this year. Peaceful, quiet and definitely not crowded. Are there any hassles if you are on the outside of the trash fence? Should I have my ticket with me just in case there are any questions?

yes, there can be "hassles".
you are outside the event, in the "closure" area, and, if BLM or LEO catch you there, they "can" ticket you.
We'll just ask you to go back inside the fence.
But, any of us, can, ask for ticket stub or proof of legitimate entry.
If you can't provide that, we (all agencies) have the right to escort you to gate, where you can plead your case, get someone else to prove to them you were inside legitimately, or buy another ticket.

In practice, if "we" catch you out there, we just ask you to return inside the fence.
We can usually tell if you've been in there already.

you can't bet on LE or BLM to be as nice. But, they usually are.

but, it's a BLM/permit thing,so, can be harsh.

geospyder, as a wonderful 'inbounds' alternative walk out into the middle of the 'walk-in camping' area; very quiet, no vehicles, hardley anyone there 'cept an occasional plane taking off/landing at the airport next door; lay out a mat and enjoy the sun =)

Ygmir is correct on this.

One point of clarification to what he wrote: it should say "If you're lucky, aren't a dick, and don't reappear/re-offend, then Perimeter is likely to just chat with you and ask you to step back inside the trash fence."

The official policy is to have them hop in the truck and take them to the gate. Even with a ticket stub, even with an exit wristband. The closure zone is meant to be a buffer.

There have been participants that get confused that the ticket stub allows them to go wherever they like once they've processed in.

I just don't really get why people do this, personally. There are oceans of room all around INSIDE the trash fence where you'd be virtually alone all day. Why stepping just outside makes a difference is beyond me.

If you want that free playa feeling, just visit some other time of the year.

we run across that all the time....folks standing, dancing......as we approach, they jump back and moon, laugh, or flip us off........hahahaa
great fun.

Played chicken, with a boat art car out there one year, at point 3.

he'd pull the car, actaully over the fence, all on board dancing and such.

as we'd approach, to ask him to not run over, and outside the fence, he'd back up and they'd taunt us.........

well, it made them feel powerful, I'm sure.

Luckily, I didn't have to get all "Barney Fife" on 'em..........

Outside the trash fence is a void to me. Doesn't exist. I exert quite a bit of effort and money to get INSIDE that fence. And it is all happening, inside the fence.

Last year there was an ultra marathon that went around the perimeter a bunch of times and ended under the man. Brutal... If you look hard enough, you will find any and every thing on the playa!

I don't think it's common.

Expensive vehicles with costly bikes and people that can obviously afford tickets, can and have been seized by the blm.
I'm sure it's lots of fun fighting with them about that.

not real common.
I intercepted two motorcycles last year, in a high speed dash for the fence.
But we have ways of seeing you long before you get there.........
and, I keep an eagle eye out.

I'm always amazed by the ultra runners. I think a nice jog one time around would do it for me.

From what I've learned so far, it seems that the Burn experience can be whatever a person wants to make it. I'll be attending on my own and am looking forward to finding my way.

I've been going to the playa two, maybe three times a year. But I live pretty close. That's when I get my 'empty and desolate' thing. But at BM in the deep playa, well... predawn near the fence is pretty close.

We use marine radar on the play for land speed events, lets us know if the course is clear or if anyone is on an intercept course with another rig at 5-600 miles an hour.

so yeah, marine radar would see you coming for miles on the playa. I can even lock onto your vehicle and track it as a target.
