An englishman in Black Rock...

Post by milkybarkid » Sun Jul 18, 2004 4:53 am

Me and a friend are BM virgins coming over from the UK. It seems like preparing for the festival is an absolute mission if you're US based - if you're coming from 5 thousand miles across the ocean that mission seems squared. Are there any sympathetic souls out there who would consider letting a couple of mid-twenties Limeys use their party as a starting point? i.e. lifts, sharing of water and food, and providing advice, etc. Of course, we'd chip in for the extra expense! And we'd talk in comedy cockney accents on demand. Hell, we'll even sing the national anthem and toast the queen if you'd like. We'd probably be arriving in San Francisco or LA a week before the event kicks off, so people leaving from either of those areas would be ideal. And of course we'd be on hand to run errands and generally share the burden.

Hope someone can help!

are you guys renting a car in SF? We aren't a big theme camp but we'd love the company. We're a mix of east coast and west coast people, maybe 12 in all, and love accents! This year will be my seventh and we're going up in two shifts, half on Sunday night and half on thursday morning.

Oye Mate, Whatchya?

Oye Mates!

Long way to come for the burn, eh? I'm an L.A. based, sophomore burner, year two. Leaving for the burn Sunday, 29. If you blokes are starting your trek from LA you're welcome to re-energize and prep up at my pad. Modest, comfy, at no expense.

Lemme know what you're planning.

Well done boys.

Off you go then.

Lost in translation

Post by bdongray » Wed Jul 21, 2004 9:51 pm

Hints:
  • + If they do sing, you'll recognize the British national anthem tune, it's the same tune as "My Country Tis Of Me". I understand some American used the same tune and changed the lyrics to poke fun at the British!
+ "sophomore" is a common American word meaning "year two" somewhere (usually school). Most Brit's will not have heard this word - ever (even though it is in a British dictionary).

so many people to thank...

Post by milkybarkid » Thu Jul 22, 2004 2:17 am

Cheers for the replies, people. Thanks for the translation bdongray, true -we don't say sophomore much. With the exception of music reviewers who always seem to say '[insert name of band] have managed to avoid the usual sophomore album problems and reinvented themselves in... blah blah blah'. And apparently the tune of Star Spangled Banner actually started life as a bawdy english drinking song. So there you go...

But anyways. Melissa - thanks for all the info in your email. You guys sound pretty nuts and lots of fun. The thing is my friend and I are really trying to avoid forking out a shed load of cash for a car that we're just going to hammer for two days, and then leave in a dusty car park for a week. It'll be great to have a load of mates to hook up with when we get to the festival, but the practical things are what i'm trying to deal with at the moment. Like preparing stuff to take, and actually getting there.

XS - Tell me about it! Distance and a half! But hopefully well worth it. Dude, very kind of you to offer a place to rest our weary heads in LA. What are your travel plans for the Burn? Any chance of a spare couple of places in an automobile? At the moment I'm looking at starting from SF, but if that ain't looking like it's going to happen then LA's the next choice.

Looking forward to BM like a pooch looks forward to its Pedigree Chum.

Keep it fresh.

Actually, that's "my country, 'tis of *thee*"

(... of thee I sing), and the fun it pokes, is that we're singing about the country, not a monarch (as in God Save The Queen/King, or whoever happens to be on the throne)

But if you do sing, don't forget the verse about Marshal Wade and "...Rebelious Scotts to crush..." - that's my favortie.

Don't get me started on rebellious scots. It sends me a bit funny. I come over all imperial.

All together now...

God save our noble Queen...'

"...O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see your like again
That fought and died for
Your wee bit hill and glen.
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's army,
And sent him homeward
Tae think again..."

Hey guys I'm also a virgin burner and am travelling from Edinburgh out to the burn this year and have had quite an experience getting stuff together and organising everything. If you need a perspective from this side of the pond then feel free to PM

Cheers

Hey Kids.

Post by XS » Thu Jul 22, 2004 5:17 pm

What's up kids? I'll be busy prepping until the 28th which is load up the trailer day. I'm planning on making the trek Sunday the 29th in early am.

Last year it took about 10 hours. Time would pass quicker with other mates onboard. I'm planning on rendez-nous-ing with some other friends in Reno, and chill at the Hilton for one last shower, chef-cooked meal. etc..
We are all good folks, burners at heart (albeit 2nd year for most and some other virgins too.)

I have an extra cab pick up truck with a camper shell and will be pulling a trailer with my mutant vehicle, providing I'm invited to bring the MV to the burn. I reckon I've got space for a couple of bodies and some light gear.

Food, water, shelter, can easily be remedied before the trek.

You're right though. San Francisco would be better logistically. If you still decide on SF, no worries mate. My offer still stands. Let me know..

Peace and safe travels.

Don't get me wrong. I've got Scottish ancestry - and Irish - and English. Small wonder that I'm sometimes at war with myself.

But you should definately visit the Mad Tea Party on The Playa. Based on Alice in Wonderland, of course, and run by some very friendly Brits.
