BM first timer coming from Santa Fe, NM :)

Hey everybody!

My name is Patrick/23 yrs old and I think the time is right to make this journey out to the desert to experience Wonderland and meet like-minded travelers. Unfortunately I might have to make this journey alone as nobody I know is on board with the idea. I'm spontaneous enough to go at it alone, but I think I'll be missing the social aspect of the journey without a small pod of people to accompany me and take care of each other during the week long craziness. If anyone could direct to a place on this website where I can start connecting with others I would be very appreciative. Either way- I'm very excited to experience my first burning man! Please don't hesitate to say hello- see you all there and may all have safe travels to and fro. Woohooooooooooooo!!!!!

Don't worry about coming alone. A lot of people before you have came alone and many more after you will as well. Plus, honestly if your friends arnt up for it, it isn't the time for them to come. Remember what the Men in Hats had to say about friends?

Thank you for the warm welcome! Heh, you're right- if my friends aren't on board maybe it's just not the time for them to be coming. If I've traveled the world by myself- I think I can tackle BM. It's fun to even think how I'm going to make it out there- such adventure... just what I've been yearning for :)

It's also my first time and I'm camping alone. The playa isn't the typical isolated American suburb and I imagine we'll both have 45,000 new best friends within minutes.

I may be exaggerating a bit, but I imagine you see the point.

Come over to Media Mecca where I'll be volunteering and look for me, I'll be nice. Maybe.

If you do come alone, drive safe....Don't over extend your driving capabilities! As a truck driver, I knew it was time to sleep, when I imagined deer jumping in front of my truck. Once you arrive in BRC, you won't be alone for long.

Thanks for the positive feedback- I'll look into the stagger camps. I'm so excited.... all I've been doing as of late is figuring out what kind of BM get up I can create. What do you guys generally wear>?

What don't we wear? (Feathers, I guess. It makes a mess. No feathers, except for maribou, according to the main site.)

If you haven't, check out the photos here. Try the "people" or "performances" dropdown menu for a lot of costumes.

You'll note reoccurring themes: eye protection, head protection, bandannas/dustmasks, boots, things that light up, faux fur, layers, bags, utility belts, shemaghs, scarves--and skirts, kilts and sarongs on men and women alike. All of those things begin with a reason: it can get very hot during the day, very cold at night, the dust-storms are epic, the dust may eat at your feet depending on your body chemistry, and if you don't light yourself up you may be struck by an art car.

Bright colors, unusual materials, weird themes, etc are the true electives. It's also nice to have costumes for the two extremes of temperature, though it's not the end of the world if you have to be utilitarian in 40F weather.

So, start with the necessities like protection for your eyes and head, and lights for your body, and then go nuts. This is your chance to wear anything you ever wanted.
