I've met Satan multiple times in Black Rock City!
In 2000, he encouraged me to stay in my tent for four hours during the Wednesday duststorm. I read MFK Fisher's The Art of Eating. It was really good, actually, but my time would have been better spent dancing. Four days I later, I showered desperately in the open at 5am with a gallon of distilled water, and let the water hit the playa. (Satan's influence keenly felt all those days later.)
In 2001 and 2003, Satan made me wander around by myself too much. Goddamn you, Satan. (I still had a good time.)
In 2008, Satan made me drink too much absinthe. I'm sorry to all that witnessed this. (It was the Devil's fault, not mine). That was still a pretty great year though. I have some beautiful photos.
In 2009, I made Satan drink too much absinthe. He may have actually been a guy named Steve. But he looked like Satan.
In 2010, I defeated Satan in Thunderdome.
I'm looking forward to my next Burn.

Well, the guy writing the article only got 60% of what's going on at Burning Man. Still I think we are going a bit harsh on him.
No one EVER talks about the similarities of Burning Man with noninstitutionalized Christian spirituality, which I personally find to be abundant!
Burning Man is a spiritual experience; its a reinvigorating experience: thats what religion is supposed to do for you isn't it?
And Burners are very compassionate, accepting, and moral people when it comes down to it. The only difference is we are not following a harsh moral code, we just have moral principles that everyone REALLY DOES live by on the playa.
On an intellectual basis, the guy never reached the connections of Burning Man with Zoroastrianism, or Zoroastrianism with Christianity. Also he missed the concepts of naturalism and survivalism, which are very important social concepts. He came very close, but he's too locked into this Satanic idea to get spirituality at Burning Man.
Kudos for him on:
1) anti-Christian (he got that, even a little too well)
2) Druid burning ceremony (That's true, but not THE reasoning behind the rituals, more a cover)
3) Egyptian Ceremonies (very good info, even for someone like myself)
4) Scottish Right Masonry (Oh, he's so close to understanding; obviously he's not a Mason or he wouldn't [a] be talking about it, or [b] think it was all so "evil")
5) Witchcraft in general (good research, but too nebulous, and misdirection as usual)
I would like to propose that Burning Man is:
1) Spiritual
2) Moral
3) Not anti-Christian
4) Good specifically for escaping materialism
Whatever your feelings about this, I want you to realize its more complicated than "Burning Man is Satanic". I also want you to see that the person who wrote the article is not totally trying to reduce BM to that, he is using it more as a hook to get your attention, and then provides some good information after that. Like everyone else, I hope burners give him a nod of respect in his spiritual journey for truth.
