Wildeone, this conversation has evolved way past you. There hasn't been any bitching for quite a while, just an interesting conversation attempting to find some solutions to what appears to be a problem to prevent it from happening again. Isn't that what you wanted as well? Or are you upset that 'your' thread has been highjacked? (in which case, welcome to a message board)

Step away from the keyboard before you stick your foot in your mouth again. Maybe go relax at the beach or something.

I like how sometimes first impressions are actually fairly right on.

OH MY GOD!

Post by honeyfire » Thu Jul 22, 2004 3:49 pm

People, this is beautiful.
This is what i was expecting from the eplaya: genuine interaction and discussion.

Technopatra, i do not expect to make the actual playa this year, but am planning on next, and i would love to give you some bodywork or pancakes or a song or a cute toy lemur or whatever it is that makes you feel taken care of and cherished. You freakin' ROCK.

Purple Koosh, i have no doubt that you are well able to take good care of yourself and your crew on the playa and in life. You don't strike me as the fuzzy bliss-ninny sort, you do strike me as the sensible, keeping things together while having a good time type.

One thing that i learned before ever typing my first word into a bbs is that the written word alone can be very deceptive. 'Swhy some bright soul invented the smiley. There is no body language nor, especially important, tone of voice* to give the feeling behind the bare words. I find e-interaction very interesting for this reason. I have found that one can easily fall into extravagant language to "fill in" the expressive void that tone of voice leaves gaping wide.
Let me say now that if anyone is ever in doubt of what i mean by something, please take it in the most friendly interpretation available, as that is 98% likely what i mean by it.
I am SO looking forward to getting out on the a-playa and getting face to face with the people i am "meeting" here, and the many others i will no doubt encounter.
<<<<<<excited>>>>>

*As regards tone of voice, a friend of mine does a hilarious spoken piece consisting entirely of the massive range of meanings that can be conveyed in the single word "dude".

Round here, smilies are considered by many to be beneath contempt. I don't know if that's because of the annimated ones, or just any smileys. We have a complicated honor, perhaps shoot in foot culture.

Oh and

"I, for one, have no intention of being a PR rep and Kool-Aid server for a Christian-revival stadium event where all you're expected to do is show up with a ticket, a silly-ass stoned grin on your face, a "WWLD?" temporary tattoo on your forehead, and then all sing the Barney Show theme."

LMAO, as some years ago, the Denver metro area was host to a Pope visit and something like 300,000 Christians descended on an open field on the prairie in full sun in July for an all-day Popefest. I do feel bad for the med staff who had to deal with thousands of people getting dehydration/altitude sickness, heat/sunstroke, severe sunburns, etc including being flat out overcome with religious awe at being within binocular distance of the actual Pope (which for a devout Catholic has gotta be pretty freakin' cool).

Oh, and one thing i haven't seen mentioned is the wonder substance, the lube of the gods, the good stuff:
WD40.

Thanks for the props, TP.

Don't know how Stuart feels about being lumped with me. Way back when (and this aint thread drift, or at least not thread drift in a new direction, 'cause it concerns my being a newbie on this board) in my BlueBirdPoof days I had words with Stuart. I was charging in in my self appointed role of disabililty advocate on the e-playa. It's not a role that I am not perfectly suited for--I do have real disability experience, and I have connections in the disability community, but I don't know everything or evne close to everything--but I think it's an important viewpoint so I throw in those two cents from time to time, and sometimes I get it wrong. Stuart has corrected me (as far as I can tell he thinks I can be a little half baked) and since this was during my time as a newb and I was feeling vulnerable I jumped at him. And mentally put him on the "Scary E-Playans I don't Want to Tangle With" list and sort of slunk around him when we posted on the same thread. So, for whatever it's worth:

Stuart: Now that I've been on the board for longer, have seen how you argue with integrity and your sences of humor and of honor, I have to say that to be mentioned in the same breath as you gives me a nice feeling of warmth and smugness. I hope you can come to see my "youthfull" (in terms of the board) indescretions as not my true immutable character, but as part of my growth on this board and in this community.

aw geeze,

we've all been there.

if anything, after our 'scuffle', I did try to chill out a bit. I reflected on the fact that aspects of my brutal and crusty sense of humor don't really translate too well over text and certainly not too well with those that don't know me. Which in terms of this board is damn near %100.

I am with Affinity on the vulnerability thing - it's so difficult for so many of us to open up that I cherish that as the gift it is. I have the same reaction you do when you see someone who is how you used to be. My attitude was there specifically to mask a deep, unfulfilled desire to be taken care of, and an intense sense of betrayal for the world that wasn't doing it for me - and it kills me when I recognize that pain in others. when I see a self-destructive tough girl with too much makeup and chips for epaulettes I never know whether I want to tell her everything is going to be ok or sucker-punch her and run the other direction at the fastest possible speed. I don't even want to be reminded of what it felt like to be her.

Regardless, I think you are a total rock star for finding courage to stand on your own two feet. I know a few people who could learn much by your example.
Thanks. Eventually I'll learn how to do it without stepping on anyone's toes in the process. *wry smile*

Your right, I am sorry for being a yahoo...... don't mean to be... I just got really tired of reading about all the bantering in the beginning and didn't read the posts for awhile. Then i got back to some really huge responses (what i thought were still in the topic "My Topic" (i don't own it anymore) and blatently abused my energy with aggression towards you all....without even reading the posts.... (thought they were more crap)

Foot out of mouth... Yuck tastes like shit... My appoligies

Technopatra..... Wow, all i can say is "wow" you are definately the soft spoken genius.. I can even hear a sing song voice attached to your posting. I really appreciate your attention to what everyone is saying... You don't miss a beat.

My appoligies again, My First impressions (by the way i was being slammed) was that this was a "all for oneself" chat line..... boy was i wrong.... (there is intelegence after all)

Wildeone,

Don't worry about the anger of others. Your message was the first thing I read on the ePlaya. I couldn't understand why people were ragging on you so much. I thought your question was totally fine. I am glad to see the admin took charge and posted a new sticky message. That bassically says:

The same questions get asked over and over. This is to be expected and anyone who gets frustrated by the repetition may want to consider spending time in another area.

Answer with information or move along.

I notice on alot of message boards, not just eplaya, that people with a high number of post start to get a big ego. And since they post the most they plaster their anger all over the board. The sad thing is the pople who jump on band waggon. They see that someone with a high number of post ragging on someone and they all want to jump on that guys side.

I can't think of a better time for the quote:

"Never argue with an idiot, he will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience."

What type of sick power trippin' assholes come to a Question & Answers section of a site only to make people feel stupid for asking questions??

But, out of all this ngative BS, good has come. I had never seen that Tribe list anywhere before. It has given me some great ideas. Thank You. If you wouldn't have posted your "idiotic" message I might have never come across that list.

This may have happened, but I don't think so. I have only been on this board a short time, but a good number of the questions asked, have been answered numerous times before. The search function takes some time to utilize, but does come up with plenty of info, and that is why people get frustrated. This may or may not have been the case here. A lot of people post questions without looking for the answer first. Some people get frustrated with the same question over and over. New people are just that, new, and have not read the same question over and over, while the people with higher post counts (which have often been here for quite some time) have. Its the equivilent of a group of people having a conversation, and someone walks up and askes a question, gets their answer and walks away. Then someone else walks up, asks the same question, gets their answer and walks away, and so on and so on. If you are one of the people standing in the group since the begining, it gets tiresome. I see both sides of this. Hopefully the new sticky Q&A thread Lydia Love started will help with this.

He asked for a definition:

Main Entry: ass·hole
Pronunciation: 'as-"(h)Ol
Function: noun
1 usually vulgar : ANUS
2 a usually vulgar : a stupid, incompetent, or detestable person b usually vulgar : a despicable place -- usually used in the phrase asshole of the universe

Looking at the second descriptor, these are character traits that can be changed through education and increased social awareness which is one of the many purposes that this board serves. This use of this term should be transitory in nature. Are you part of the problem, or part of the solution?

Aw, that's nothing. you should hear me in the shower.

But seriously, one of the things that was hard for me to learn here is that generally speaking, every flame war has the potential to evolve into something better. We all get out of heads sometimes, but it's our willingness to reflect and respond that makes the bonds that keep us coming back.

You rock.

I don't really expect a heart felt response, when I use terms like "sick power trippin' assholes". Its just good old fashioned drama. :D :D

I also see both sides. I know it sucks when people just start asking questions with out doing some research. But everbbody is different. Not everbody is computer savy or fourm savy. I don't think some people are even aware they can search the eplaya. Fuck, some people don't even know they can search Google.

But in all truths, I have learned alot of good info here in the last few days. If it wern't for people who have different ideas than I, things would be pretty borning.

What do you really need to bring to BM!

Post by Apollonaris Zeus » Sat Jul 24, 2004 2:31 am

That's really tough question, wildone.

I guess you should bring what really matters to BM.

A sound mind.

Innovation!

A capability to solve highly complex problems.

And alot of things that if we were to bring them we could end up in jail!

So if you wish to make it in this crowd, you have to please us.

All 30,000 of us!

If you fail to do so, Then it is your fault I didn't have a good time!

Hey Wildeone,
Forget this Eplaya crap. Seriously. You're gonna have a blast, and as long as you read up on the official material and prepare, you'll be fine. Again, forget all of this and just get stoked for the experience of your life. As your attorney, I advise you to log off and not look back until September 6, 2004.

Many people will disagree, but I say as long as you know the basics, it's best to figure the whole thing out for yourself. Some have alluded to that with remarks about reading the #@^%! Survival Guide before attempting to post on the Eplaya. The point is, you don't need to use the Eplaya until next year. Until then, Oh, the false preconceptions you will gain by sticking around here...

Read EVERYTHING in the First-timers' Guide, 2004 Survival Guide, etc. on the main site, and you'll be fine. Do your own thing, be safe, and we'll see you out there.

SealBoy.

I know that i will have the time of my life..... I am hopeing to have some wild experiences. I love the kind of people who go to these sort of events. Real people.... who are as in the monment as it gets... I am glad that i have gotten a fair amount of (useful) responses to my questions... Some BS but i am the kind who remind those who are rude or not thinking to behave... (don't take responsibility for others energy... they can keep it.) but some have the kind of energy that wraps around you like a warm blanket.... and that kind of energy i remember very well and cherish....

Thanks Sealboy for making me aware of the great time i am lokking forward to ....sooooooooo much... Yeah
