Is Syria Next ?
I didn't start a thread on Libya but, Syria seems like it will cause even worse problems. It's run by the Baath party . They are pretty harsh with their enemies. This is one more Sunni- Shia rivalry. Syria is a strict authoritarian state. If syria should fall apart, the contagion will spread even wider. This will make israel very nervous. It remains to be seen just how far the problems will spread. This is a good summary;

Tom, I'm not so much implying that the U.S. will go in. My question is more directed at the idea that the established leaders will be tossed out. One has to consider that the problems in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Bahrain, and Saudi might spread to Syria. If the resultant in-fighting were as bad as the in-fighting in Lebanon and Iraq, the place would be a total mess just like Lebanon. If Syria fractures into competing militias, there will be endless fighting.

not to put too fine of a point to it but, I think this is the perfect place. The other sections deal with more or less Burningman stuff, this place is for most other stuff. I have started many more threads, with even less importance and relevancy in this section, here let me show you...graidawg wrote:Another political post? why. surely there are better places for political activism than on eplaya.

Rabbi, surely you're not dissing " People who are Mulan to me" ?
Dougly,,, why Jordan? I thought that their monarchy was pretty much in touch. I haven't been there in many years though.
One of the main "drivers" for these problems is the high rate of youth unemployment. This has been true from Greece to Egypt. Spain has it as bad as Greece.
The desert countries let their population outrun their food producing capacity. GOV subsidized food. GOV is now too broke to continue the subsidies in a few countries.
The natives are getting restless.

Leftist mastermind puts up big bucks to erase border.
Philanthropist billionaire George Soros is a primary funder and key proponent of the global organization that promotes the military doctrine used by the Obama administration to justify the recent airstrikes targeting the regime of Moammar Gadhafi in Libya.
The activist who founded and coined the name of the doctrine, "Responsibility to Protect," sits on several key organizations alongside Soros. Also, the Soros-funded global group that promotes Responsibility to Protect is closely tied to Samantha Power, the National Security Council special adviser to Obama on human rights. Power has been a champion of the doctrine and is, herself, deeply tied to the doctrine's founder.
According to reports, Power was instrumental in convincing Obama to act against Libya.
The Responsibility to Protect doctrine has been described by its founders and proponents, including Soros, as promoting global governance while allowing the international community to penetrate a nation state's borders under certain conditions.
Libya regarded as test of global doctrine.

There is an important detail that the article left out. Russia has a military base in Syria.

Re: Is Syria Next ?
Syria seems to be in the crosshairs.
"NATO preps for new war
Syrian chief warns attack will set Middle East aflame"
""If a crazy measure is taken against Damascus, I will need not more than six hours to transfer hundreds of rockets and missiles to the Golan Heights to fire them at Tel Aviv," Assad reportedly said"
MAJOR BUMMER
"Assad also reiterated that Damascus will call on Hezbollah in Lebanon to launch an intensive rocket and missile attack on Israel, reported Fars.
"All these events will happen in three hours, but in the second three hours, Iran will attack the U.S. warships in the Persian Gulf and the U.S. and European interests will be targeted simultaneously," Assad was quoted as saying."
MAJOR BUMMER
It wouldn't make sense for Iran to attack the U.S. navy UNLESS that they thought that Iran was next on the hit-list. Then, it would make sense to put israel on the hit list as israel is the major antagonist in the area.

At least they get points for keeping things interesting. Apparently the woman who had been abducted, killed, and mutilated by the authorities... wasn't.

They're interesting in OZ too;
"Knight, 50, is the first woman in Australia's history to be sentenced to life in prison.
She had appealed against the sentence claiming the killing was not in the worst category of murder.
Knight stabbed 44-year-old Mr Price 37 times with a butcher's knife before skinning him and hanging his hide from a meat hook in their lounge room on February 29, 2000.
She then decapitated him and put his head in a pot on the stove, baked flesh from his buttocks and cooked vegetables and gravy as side dishes to serve to Mr Price's children. "
And Brazil; http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/fo ... opic=91358
And California. http://news.yahoo.com/us-wife-killed-co ... 51669.html
"A psychiatrist testified that she confessed to cooking her husband's ribs barbecue-style and tasting them"
Yeah, I know,,, thread drift.

Are you connecting divinity with that wretched patch of desert?
Jordan is next, CSS!
Actually much of what has occurred in the Mid East has VERY LITTLE to do with Religion. Blaming what is going on over there on Religion is a very Fox News/Republican approach to the World and is probably why the USA/UK/ Aust etc are bogged down in Iraq.
It has to do with concentrated power. It has to do with poverty. It is about 1% owning everything and the other 99% being disenfranchised.
AS an aside Syria, Jordan and Iran all have large Christian communities that are doing just fine.

Re: Is Syria Next ?
Yes, but none of those have any connection with the unrest in Syria. Zainab al-Hosni (the Syrian woman in the article I linked) had been widely reported as the first woman killed in custody since the beginning of the Syrian uprising. It will be interesting to see how it plays out - because the story got a lot of media attention when her death was first reported last month, there will likely be an effort to follow this up and figure out the identity of the person whose remains were passed off as Miss al-Hosni, and why they would report her as having been killed to begin with.

Re: Is Syria Next ?
EL OH EL. I find it funny reading people who react soooo strongly to Middle East violence and naively peg all that blame on religion as if violence does not exist in noticeable quantities outside the context of religion. Then cue the obligatory "ohh, this world would be so much more peaceful without religion." NOT.
Unfortunately, as with everything, whatever seems to be a problem right now seems to be the worst problem ever. Summer feeling hotter than spring now? OH DAMN GOTTA BE GLOBAL WARMING! Suicide bombing in Iraq? RELIGION HAS GOT TO GO!
This quote here highlights peoples' short memories:
Remember when the sides Middle East Conflict was were made around racial, not religious lines? You know, the "Arab-Israeli Conflict?" The same Egypt and Israel from the lyrics of the Love Train? Of course not, right. It's always been a religious battle. THAT'S WHY YOU'RE AGNOSTIC.
- Because only suicide bombers come from religion (hint: the tactic was popularized by the Tamil Tigers).
- Because the worst genocides, horrors, and violence came from religion (right, like Stalin's genocides, the Holocaust, the Rape of Nanjing, the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, or wait...).
- Because the Arab states / Middle East has always warred in the context of religion (doesn't it sound strange to hear Gaddafi appealing to anti-colonialism instead of religion).
- Because religion breeds intolerance and hate (right, because all 2.2 Billion+ Christians, and 1.5 Billion+ Muslims are actively engaged in hate and intolerance)
You've been suckered into this whole religious blame just like so many people everywhere. I remember laughing at someone describing just how gullible many uneducated people are in the Middle East believing anything bad about Israel or the US. The kind of people who think the British release man-eating badgers to plague villages (this is true by the way). Then I started hearing the same kind of thing from the gullible morons here. Guess what the common dysfunction is: gullible humans. For those people seeking to herd the ignorant masses religion is simply a tool like a gun, or a pen, or a slogan, or race, or nationality, or gender. They're tools used by humans for influence. They can be used for good or for bad. Do we blame the tool, or the person using it? Use your head.
