Banner ads on BM website
OK, I'm going to play nice here, and repress my urge to wring my hands and say, "Why, why, WHYYYYYY....?!?!"
Instead, I'm going to remain open to various thoughts, viewpoints, and politely ask,
When did banner ads start appearing on the BM website? And what is the thought process behind this change? Also, how does that fit with the idea of non-commercialism and not advertising big corporations? (The first one I saw was for tents at Wal-Mart; the one I saw just now was for Victoria's Secret. Someone on Facebook posted about having seen one about Marlboro Country).
Tell me please, that this is an April Fool's joke....?
Slightly heartbroken but trying to stay openminded,

Ah, already, someone's not playing nice....
Oh, wait. "Badger." Now it makes sense.
Not clueless, just so heartbroken I was--I kid thee not--afraid to click on the link. For fear that it wouldn't be a joke.
Anyway, thank goodness, thank goodness.
I suppose I should have kept my (typing) trap shut, and simply looked to see if it vanished tomorrow....

It's now April 2nd, and the banner ads are still on the main page of the Burning Man web site. Wow, this is for real!
I am going to sell my ticket to the event this year and boycott everything that is Burning Man related.
I am also going to boycott, Home Depot, Walmart (not that it's a bad thing), Victoria Secret (although I will still look at the mannequins in the window), Marlboro cigarettes (well, I don't smoke) and Trojan condoms (even the one that's been in my wallet since 8th grade).
Further, I intend to hold my breath until these ads are removed from the website.
Larry Harvey should be ashamed of himself!

Would you complain about those ads if it were announced that the revenue from them would reduce the cost of your ticket be half? Just wondering.

I am almost certain Burning Man didn't have someone sitting at BM HQ waiting till precisely 12:01 am Pacific time to remove a banner ad prank from their website.
Having been in SF this week, I know I sure as heck wouldn't be sitting in the office with so many great things to do around me. I'd be gone.
So in short...a bunch of people need to chill out. If it's still up by noon on Monday then give them hell. But until the weekend is over...I'd expect it to be left up...remember they are volunteers for the most part. We often forget that.

I am willing to keep an open mind, but we are well into the day after April Fools Day, and the ads are still there. I am searching for a place to buy my cheap imported Chinese crap, since I am boycotting Walmart. Any ideas?
I am not completely holding my breath---I am taking half breaths. I would think that someone would want to see a picture of the condom that's dry rotted in my wallet. Go figure!

There is nobody working on the weekend, so for sure they won't be removed until Monday, assuming they even remember to do it then.Shambala wrote:I am willing to keep an open mind, but we are well into the day after April Fools Day, and the ads are still there. hookahdude, this is the eplaya... Over-reactions, rumors, illegible ramblings are part of the experience. Snark is a past-time.hookahdude wrote:I think I would worry if the banner ads WENT SOMEWHERE BESIDES THE FRIGGIN ARTICLE ON APRIL FOOL'S DAY ON WIKIPEDIA!!!

Good point....
I am just sitting here watching a documentary called Waste Land about the artisit Vik Muniz who went down and worked with the "pickers" of the Jardim Gramacho landfill in Rio de Janiero. Here are people who literally live in the landfill and sift through rubbish in order to just live.
My perspective is a bit different at this moment and to see people get their panties in a bunch over something so trivial is just well... ya know?

Oh, they're gone now. I guess it was a joke. Forget all those nasty things I said. I love Burning Man and I love Larry Harvey. It's good thing I didn't sell my ticket.stretch80 wrote:Fuck people.

There are NO banner adds on the BM site. Nothing, nada, zip. Whatever you saw has been taken down.

Now everyone can calm down and realize that EVERY FUCKING YEAR there is something fun for April Fools Day.
I still stand by my assessment that we have a lack of humor here on eplaya. Five years ago, everyone would have understood. Now there is a lot of spoon feeding required. I will adjust my posts accordingly.
Everyone is busy this weekend at the Convectional Caucus in SF.

I've always loved both the playa and eplaya because my dry and sometimes caustic sense of humor was always understood and appreciated. A few years back, it started to shift and I noticed a new level of righteous indignance that I've only before seen at the return counter of a Walmart.
Yes, I know that this was all part of a fun AF prank, and I was just following up with it. Please re-read my postings--they're actually funny.
Humor and trends are changing, which is why the TV show Two and a Half Men is so popular. I don't find this lowbrow, cheap crap very funny, but most people do.
So here I find myself trying to explain my humor in regards to April Fools Day. Ugghh!
I still love you all to pieces!

By the way, that smart phone that I placed in the water of a urinal was a success. This non-working display phone looked perfect sitting in the pee. It had everyone talking about whether it was waterproof and if it was damaged. It really looked like it slipped out of someone's hand, and no one suspected that it was an April Fools gag.
