newbies bring theme camp

Post by J/J » Sun Apr 03, 2011 8:49 am

Hi from Toots and Bean. We have tickets and are camping with AEZ. As insecure newbies this 2011 camp is just us, if it works then join us in 2012. We are long time students of bunerology, we have plans, are gathering our wits and supplies and so this shout out to everyone. We have a URL for you to check out, so visit our unregistered camp, http://adirondack-camp.org/ which is also known as, Adirondack desert nostalgia 60s camp, Pure maple syrup shooters camp, Snowshoe race at high noon camp, and Open by chance camp. Home of the Giant Flake. To ENTER our protected website we ask you to answer two burner questions. Help keep the default world out, don’t publish the answers. We value your humor, criticism, and your thoughts. We are a couple; we are east coast, New York State, North Country, woodland virgins. Our excitement is building. Our preparation and education continues, the count down is real, we are committed. Camp website changes, so visit from time to time.

That's pretty rad, welcome aboard.

I grew up in Connecticut and I used to go to a Boy Scout camp in Herkimer NY about 100 years ago. A friend of mine used to live in Albany.

Welcome! From an almost North Country guy. Well, Albany area to be exact.

Hi Lambert13 of Albany - we're 4 hours northwest. Our closest Metro is Ottawa. Hi to all Ontario & Quebec burners.

Toots & Bean, it's quite possible you were actually born in the Black Rock Desert (no matter what your relatives claim) and will be recognized by the cracked earth--& a pack of dusty monks (they'll say they're Lamplighters, but you'll know better) this August, and made to pull an enchanted snowshoe from a stone. It's going to rock! Welcome to ePlaya.

Looks like you're already home. :)
Did anyone mention that your solar panel needs to be wind-proofed?

I know zip about solar panels . . . :D . . . but I note Toots & Bean have a nice shade structure possibly in need of rebar and good rope, which they may have, but I would like to recommend anyway just in case, because holding up well to high wind elsewhere is not quite the same as on the playa.

wow, what a hugs parade we have going on! Wonder when Bob and/or Iso will stop by and drop one of their turds?

I love the theme camp idea going on here. This is what it's all about, at least for me. New idea, virgins delivering the goods.

One suggestion. The awning on your tent is going to be a huge liability in the 80 mph wind unless you take some serious precautions.

Hi Savannah. Thanks for your post, your first words were poetry to our ears! We share your concern about wind and tents. Thinking of bringing 18 inch stakes by Monk Industries- drive through east coast dirt, rocks, roots, clay, sod, like butter and are easy to remove. Tent guys to be of ratchet nylon straps.

Hi Ugly Dougly. Thanks - we feel at home! We share your concern about our solar blowing away – our answer fill 2 sand bags with playa. In research finding some conflicting information, Its OK to dig a hole? Its not OK to collect some playa to fill a sand bags for a soft weights?

Hi Teo Del Fuego. Thanks for you kind words. We share your concern for our tent awning which is largely shade cloth but still might act as a sail. When camp is closed or we are off duty the awning shall come down. In Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance it is written - Sometimes it’s better to travel than arrive - and we have been traveling toward this Burning Man for a long, long time and enjoying the trip- so much fun in planning. Next project is tent floor which shall be untreated white cotton canvas and stenciled with eastern woodland critter tracks-

Hi to Lowz. Thanks for your post!

PS Burners we really don’t mind snarky, you all are being so polite. Best Toots and Bean

Those stakes look pretty decent, though I have no experience with Monk specifically. 18" is a good idea. I have rebar somewhere between 18" and 24" (can't remember which) and they're good.
Its OK to dig a hole? Its not OK to collect some playa to fill a sand bags for a soft weights?
Very good question. From 2010's Survival Guide:

"Do not excavate holes in the playa. Small holes (6 inches or less in diameter and less than 2 feet deep) used for structural support are the sole exception. When digging such a hole, it is best to use an auger or a posthole digger, NOT a shovel."

(It goes on about how to backfill the hole, and says that large holes erode all over again even when backfilled, and create "a serious driving hazard" during the rest of the year.)

Download the 2010 Survival Guide here:

2011 Guide coming soon.

We take your point Savannah - thanks- about protecting the playa. We shall nix the sandbags for wind proofing solar and go with staking

Consider ratchet straps as an alternative to rope. Easier to tighten up throughout the week than rope. You can't replace all you rope applications with them, but they are quite handy.

Hi AntiM. Thanks for your post. I just put ratchet straps on the Must Buy and Must Bring check lists. The default side of my brain is screaming, I am spending way too much time and money I don’t have on this Vacation Exhibit. The virgin burner side of my brain is saying- blow some more dust in my eyes and pass the bacon please. Best Bean
