Why, thank you, Tamarakay! I'm kinda pleased with it myself.
I have to say tho, that although somewhat amused by the "Jella", I'm not quite up to her experience yet... just a fledgeling, bumbling along, learning as I go.
Funny tho, that you should make that mistake. Just before posting, I reread (which I should ALWAYS do, because I so often have to edit my posts for glaring errors), and realized that I'd referenced Jkisha's hat rather than Figjam's.
Uhhuh.... like if Jkisha was wearing a hat in that avatar anyone would even notice it!

Being on a bit of a roll here....
I also got a kickass coat at the secondhand store on Sunday. Although I loved the material, it had an extremely unfortunate collar. Still, I figured that I could rectify it, so I shelled out the $8 on a bet with myself that I could make it better.
The result was pretty cool. A chinese-type collar that ended up being just what it needed. (kinda hard to tell from this picture, but it gives a bit of an idea)
Major bonus was it gave me enough leftover to make a matching hatband for my fedora.
....just in time for poker night too!!!

BTW. That crocheted hat was perilously close to not becoming a hat at all. When my husband saw it in it's early stages -- i.e. before it flared out to head-sized, he presumed I was making myself a bullet-titted, large-nippled bikini top.
As I continued the hat I had to promise to undertake that project sometime soon.
Could be interesting!!

Don't you worry about it.
Hope your game improves immediately, and that the distraction is good rather than worrisome.
(and wouldn't a bikinitop of that shape be just downright titilating?)
I picked up a starters kit for crocheting (hook, instructional dvd and booklet and 2 hanks of yarn) for $1.99 last week, and immediately got started.
After making 2 large circles of pure shit, I started another one that, although it started out about big enough to be a thumbcozy, ended up being this:

[/img]
Not knowing the rules or different stitches (the kit, being the first of a series for learning granny squares for an eventual afghan which I won’t be making, included directions on just one stitch – in French – which helps naught when googling “recipesâ€

If budget isn't a problem, here's a great store in the Los Angeles area for BM costumes http://www.shrinestore.com/

I wouldn't recommend it. I find that there are oils in suede that just don't really agree with glue.C.f.M. wrote:I'm working with leather - well, suede for the firstish time.
Do any of you know whether gluing it works well, in lieu of sewing? I need to make a waistband. I'm debating folding it down and gluing it or trying to sew it - I know I'll have to go buy a needle and somesort of suede-worthy thread.
If you do use glue, I would put some light stitches in the leather for added security, just in case.
Finally moving to SF...can't WAIT!

Try to pick up glovers needles - they will go through 2 layers of most garment weight leather with ease.
The only glue I use for permanent bond on leather is Barge contact cement (popular with shoemakers too), but it is 100% unforgiving as to positioning - you get only 1 shot at it. It does reduce the flexibilty though so I wouldn't suggest using it on a waistband.
Rubber cement would provide a flexible bond, but is not nearly strong enough on its own so would have to be combined with sewing. It is useful sometimes for holding parts in place during assembly though.

Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Makes sense - it's the smooth, hide side on the inside of the fabric being glued. I guess I'll just go find me a gator quill (I made that up) somewheres and get to sewing.VeganChoirGirl wrote:I wouldn't recommend it. I have one of these, got it when I found some surplus sheepskin pieces, and tried to make a hat. It uses a waxed thread that's fairly stiff. The hat, turned out o.k., but funny (not a bad thing) and I just sewed all the pieces together and made a bigger piece... or footstool cover as I like to call it.

Great, I'll love for one of those - I'm not much of a fan of leather, hence no experience with it. This is one of the commissions - I think I have an awl somewhere...and I've been needing a shoe glue so I'll have to find that cement.
I got another "corset" this weekend, that brings my total to four to play with. I think I might make them all to sell.
("corset" as in plastic boning, fashion corsets)
