Newbie In love with all you burners!!
All I have to say is that I love all of you who choose to live consciously. I am very excited to be a part of Burning Man with all of you like minded beautiful people.

Re: Newbie In love with all you burners!!
There isn't one thing that every Burner should experience, not even The Man Burn itself. I know plenty of people who don't watch that, but still love the Event. Don't worry about what you "should" experience, just go and see what happens (really).Madam_Mim wrote:I do have a ? What is the one thing (if there is only one thing) every burner should experience
Make sure you read your Survival Guide, read lots of threads in the Q & A/ Tips and Tricks section.
I only live consciously because of the nasty reality that I can't type while asleep.

I honestly tried to think of "something every Burner should experience" last night. Then I gave up and went to bed.
I hope that adequately expresses how different each Burn is, how personal an experience it is for each person, and how unpredictable.
I guess I do have an answer this morning, however: a playa sunrise. However, I stop well short of saying it's "a must", or something everyone should do. If a person wants to go to sleep, much better to go to sleep. Sleep dep is particularly painful out there. But if you wake well-rested at 5:55am--or are still up--yeah, for the love of god, go look. If you have time, walk to the Esplanade and watch it with whoever is standing there.

Your experience is your own...you create it. Everyone takes away their own experience of the event. If it was the same for everyone, it wouldn't be worth attending...you could just stay at home and get the same thing from someone else talking about it.
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.
Heya! Welcome to the forums, I'm a birgin too and am loving checking out all these introductions of people who are in a similar boat.
Personally my "must" is to be open minded and be willing to go with the flow of things. I expect that nothing can be expected, and I believe this will make my experience not only unique but completely fulfilling. What is it that you like to do? More specifically what is it that makes you the most happy? Maybe there are certain niches there that you can find these things... or maybe they will find you as the vets here often suggest

Thank you all so much for your feedback. When I found out that this years burning man was Rights of Passage I knew I had to go and so I am going and you all pointed out for me the reason I really need to go. And that is just be present. I need to not plan things out so much or worry about if I am going to miss something. I have been going through a very amazing transformation and I know that burning man will only add to it and it will because of amazing poeple like you.

Lol - My first year I drank a 1/4 bottle of absinthe and have very little recollection of the man burn and was hungover for the Temple...SecretOperativeBear wrote:great streak there Dr.Dr. Pyro wrote:I've been to the past 12 BMs and have never seen the Temple Burn. My first year I made the temple burn (awesome) but missed the man burn.
This reminds me of my crazy personal ritual on each of my last four burn nights, where I'll head away from the crowd, usually before the Man is lit, and venture into the deep playa instead. I have all these surreal memories of seeing a tiny Man burn far away, usually bathed in muffled silence.
I remember in '07 holing up inside a far-off, closed art installation and missing pretty much the whole Man burn. In its own amusing way, that's kind of twisted if you think about it, right?
The only Man burn I've witnessed up close was my first, with those heart-stopping dust tornadoes from '02. I mean, why even try to top that?
I think my ritual began as a bit of a personal statement, that for me the experience was really about everything else that happened besides the actual Man burn. And although it's not intended this way at all, there's this vague, kind of quasi-lynching vibe (completely non-racist, of course) that nonetheless doesn't really work for me. Unsurprisingly, I prefer the temple burns. Part of the adventure of missing the Man burn up-close by taking refuge in the deep playa lies with running into like-minded burners. Those interactions have a way of seeming even more heightened, in their own way, than most of the other already-heightened ones throughout the week.
Come to think of it, maybe there's also an element of retaking a sense of control that seems harder to sustain in a huge crowd. That's why this year, I'm leaning strongly toward switching it up and experiencing the Man burn up close again. After all, a good burn involves relinquishing our illusory senses of control. If anything's a universal experience for burners, that submission is probably it, in one way or another. But mostly missing the last few Man burns in no way kept those years from being among my favoritest ones!

lotso f great advice given so far. I agree with the suggestion of taking some time to patrol the deep playa at night. Just let chance guide you from one wonderful piece of art or experience to the next. My favorites last year were the Burn Out Bar at 2:00 and trash fence, the Black Rock movie theatre, and trying to find the Dust City Diner

Why does "petting zoo" on the playa make me think of a bunch of creepy "furry" dudes in exposed-naughty-bits costumes pretending to be sheep or bunnies?Dr Helix wrote:Madam_Mim wrote:All I have to say is that I love all of you who choose to live consciously.
